Eyes of the Serpent (1994)
This is just a lower budget Deathstalker type movie from 1993. I rented every movie of this type back then. It is ok if one understands that it is a B grade sword & sorcery movie, kind of unintentionally funny at times. I'm happy enough to have the VHS tape
I should also add that this was originally released on VHS in two versions. There was an R rated cut and an Unrated cut. The Unrated version has about one minute more footage of Elizabeth Carlton's sex scene. The DVD put out by Simitar in 1997 was the R rated cut.
Like Mother Like Daughter (1969)
I'm a fan of Robert Vincent O'Neil. He is best known for being the man behind ANGEL and AVENGING ANGEL. Also this is the guy who penned VICE SQUAD the best psycho pimp movie ever. Earlier he directed two movies that I like a lot THE LOVING TOUCH (aka psycho lover) and BLOOD MANIA.
After seeing the above I had to lark out his directorial debut film LIKE MOTHER LIKE DAUGHTER. Well, this is a pretty poor movie shot on a shoe string budget. A lot of dubbing is used and its really bad. The plot is wanna bee gigolo Tony seduces bar owner Jamie and uses her to keep his swinging lifestyle & to pay off a large debt. Enter nympho daughter Kim and trouble erupts, the end. The amount of time dedicated to advancing the story is probably no more than twenty minutes. So in order to make this a feature length film a bunch of generally pointless scenes (full of gratuitous nudity) are thrown in to pad out the running time. Some odd stuff is thrown in as well like a guy in drag lip synching to Marilyn Monroes "diamonds are a girls best friend", a wackily stupid scene with the cop in the bar, a large party scenes that just appears out of nowhere highlighted by a nude girl bathing in a tub full of booze as guests poor cup fulls over her! Enjoy it for what it is, late 60's low budget exploitation.
60's exploitation hounds out there may find a few interesting tidbits in here. Sebastian Gregory plays Tony and you may remember him in the oddball HELP WANTED FEMALE. There's also a few uncredited cameos. Fellow exploitation director Greg Corarito plays the guy who gets to feel up a girl in a car. Lynn Harris appears briefly as a topless dancer. And former Playmate Victoria Valentino (Vicki Carbe) is the girl Tony picks up in the hotel lobby. And of course there's lots of nudity to recommend.
Joe Sarno does a comedy?
There was a short period when sexploitation guru Joe Sarno apparently just wanted to try something different. Having made (literally) a dozen or more suburban sex dramas in the 60's and then a handful of more straight forward but arty Euro sex films, Sarno then started to throw some curveballs. His bizarre YOUNG PLAYTHINGS, and the sexy horror VEIL OF BLOOD were examples of his brief break away from typical territory. With THE SWITCH Sarno did one last oddball pic, a goofy sex comedy based on the classic Jekyll & Hyde theme.
Rebecca Brooke plays geeky scientist Shirley Jekyll who wears coke bottle glasses and is a man repellent. She discovers a formula that, she thinks, will alter living cells to perfection. Of course after trying it on herself it turns her into Sherry Hyde, a nympho who gives off an irresistible scent (described as "a hint of amino acids") that makes everyone horny. Well you know where this is going..., however what one does not expect is the near slapstick comedy which is totally off character for Sarno. Jekylls roommate Louise (Chris Jordan, Clamdigger's Daughter) is a whiney white trash slut who uses words like "prevert" and spells out "o.t.e.". Louise's boyfriend Ralph is a total slob but is a riot with every third word out of his mouth being a mumbled "muther f***kin". Eric Edwards has a small role as Dr Jenkins and a miscast Sonny Landham (48 hrs) plays suave Huntingdon Van Huff the guy who falls in love with Sherry Hyde, not to be left out Jennifer Welles has a funny role as a lab assistant. The actors all seemed to be having a ball playing the goofy characters and there are a few genuinely funny moments.
As usual Rebecca Brooke really throws herself into her dual roles as both the geek and the nympho. The climactic sex scene has to be a career highpoint for Rebecca. Toward the end Sherry Hyde is so horny she propositions five of the "toughest, no goodest deck hands" to a gang bang. With full gusto she does them all screaming "screw, screw you son of a bitch" until one by one there all dead. What takes this down a notch is the fact its intercut with Sonny Landham looking for her.
The print I saw had three main sex scenes one of which was clearly heavily trimmed (it seemed to have involved a large sausage!!) where as the others seemed complete. Sarno movies are known for their trashy dialog during sex scenes but in this one it ascends to all out screaming. The first orgy had 2-3-4 participants screaming at once, rather amusing or annoying depending on your viewpoint.
As for recommendations, Its no where near perfect, the budget is non existent and really only fans of Sarno and/or Rebecca Brooke will find this enjoyable. Others looking for erotic 70's softcore would probably just be annoyed at the whole thing. My rating is 7/10 but is mostly based against Sarno's other work. Hopefully someday proper film elements can be found for an uncut DVD release rather than this old incomplete poor quality transfer.
Southern Comforts (1971)
They take em off and off and off.....
As far as Southern skin flicks of the time go this one is average. Like the other ones produced by Harry "Nyquil" Novak, it often drags to a halt with lots of poorly shot sex/ nudity filler. In order to get naked you have to take off your clothes and this movie gives us the opportunity to watch every single piece of clothing as it comes off. It must hold a record in that regard. It is also clear that this movie was shot in a few days as the girls often looked confused or can be clearly seen looking up for guidance, no second takes here.
On the plus side we do get the humorous John Tull, once again playing his trademark roll as "Junior", who gives us a few good laughs in the movie. Sadly, he is heavily underused and takes a distant second stage to the endless supply of fully naked girls. But I will say that Monica Gayle is one of the girls and that alone should be enough to recommend it to certain B movie fans.
So in short, if you want to see lots of natural looking busty girls naked, or you like to watch the act of disrobing, or you want to see Monica Gayle nude, or just like to see John Tull as Junior then you can't go wrong. Others looking for a plot, acting or general movie competence should look for something else.
Phoenix the Warrior (1988)
A dream predicament!
You are the last man on Earth and lots of scantily clads babes rule the wasteland. Wow, this is my type of story line and if its your to then this will be a winner.
This movie was a mainstay of USA Networks former weekend show UP ALL NIGHT. Simply put this is great late night cheese well worth checking out. I have seen the video box (Boris cover art I believe) at several video stores, so no excuses.
P.S. Watch for the well endowed axe wielding babe in the prison fight. Super!
Mag Wheels (1978)
Bad Acting + No Budget + 1970's = Great Movie
Anybody who use to watch USA Network's show UP ALL NIGHT in the late 1980's has probably seen this movie. I recently had the fortune of getting an original VHS copy.
This is a must see for anybody looking for a cheesy movie about teenagers who drive vans and pick-ups, hang out at the beach, skateboard at the Boogie Bowl and party at the lake. The story revolves around a new girl at school and the tension she causes when the local stud falls for her. The characters are completely addicted to using the phrase "shine it" and the best line of the movie comes from a tuff chick who after being put down emphatically says "I'm Jill, Fly Me!".
Directed by Southern skin flick legend Bethel Buckalew. Summer School does not appear to be the original title but a new name for the video release. After reading a review for Buckalew's film "Mag Wheels" they are the same movie and this is probably the original title.
