Lost: All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues (2004)
The Search
I hac completely forgotten. About Charlie's hanging, and I remember being shocked that they were killing off the Hobbit kid.
Another exciting episode in my first re-watch since the show aired. I loved Lost.
Ten Little Indians (1989)
Watch the 40s or 60s version FIRST!!!
Better than the 80s version but oof so much different than the first 2 versions.
Young Adult (2011)
Oscar Nominations for everyone!!!
How did the Academy miss this one? Fascinating portrait of depression and alcoholism with award worthy performances from Theron, Oswalt and Wilson. Fantastic screenplay by Diablo Cody!
Love, Victor: The Sex Cabin (2021)
The Mountains of Georgia
I had no idea Georgia was so sunny, and dry, and full of bit mountains!
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Redemption (2001)
Male Chemistry in a Macho Episode
Great chemistry between Keith and Maloni. This would have been an interesting character to bring back.
The Giver (2014)
Just read the book, people
Like Seriously, the book is spectacular. The movie, not
so much.
Smash-Up on Interstate 5 (1976)
Nostalgia Trumps Story
Not really very good, but ahead of its time for strangers in one situation all vaguely connected. Memorable as a kid for the big Disaster Scene. Lots of Familiar Faces here.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Excessively excessive comedy
Rated R Post... within the first 5 minutes, Leonardo Dicaprio snorts cocaine off a hooker's ass. The rest of the movie is just as excessive. A spectacular orgy of excess: cocaine, Quaalude, materialism and full frontal female nudity. Check your morals and you might have a good time. But DEFINITELY NOT for everyone.
Scorcese directs in his usual High NRG style (like "After Hours" and "The Color of Money", the camera never stops moving.) DiCarpio goes all out with this character, making him human, though not heroic at all. These are awful people doing awful things, and the film might revel too much in that, without showing the consequences of it.
A definite GUY film, probably could complement with Pacino and DiPalma's "Scarface".
The Amityville Horror (2005)
Wasted original "material" for all-new story
Not the worst film in the horror genre, but given the original material, both definitely true and reportedly true, why did they decide to go with all-new ideas and changing the "events" that occurred in the book and the original movie? Ryan Reynold's Chest, though, could rival Brad Pitt in the abs department. The kids do a good job, especially young Mr. Bennett in a scene reminiscent of "The Sixth Sense". The house is creepy yet beautiful, and I could have handled seeing more of it. Also, less "gotcha" moments, and more suspenseful eeriness. Wandering around a house at night can be creepy enough. Go with that.
Not bad, on a par with the original, but it could have been so much better. And longer, too. 82 minutes?!?
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
Upside Down Fun
My favorite of the 70's disaster movies. It's probably least credible in what could really happen, but the over the top acting, the terrific sets and special effects, and the exciting trip up to the bottom make it a fun movie to watch. Plus, 70's fashions!! And "The Morning After" AM radio at it's poppiest!!
Honestly, a fun, entertaining adventure story.
What Lies Beneath (2000)
Terrific Ghost Story
This one looked like a lot of fun from the trailers, and I was absolutely right. It's a lot of scary fun. When I saw this in the theater, I sat next to a big Hispanic young man, and he and I seemed to be competing for highest scared jump.
There's lots of scares in this movie, but the overall tone is true Hitchcockian. Michelle Pfeiffer is her usual fabulous, gorgeous self as she tries to figure out who is stalking her inside her own home.
Gorgeous locations, lots of red herrings, and plenty of twists and turns. If you like Scary Movies, you'll enjoy this one.
10 out of 10
The Last of Sheila (1973)
Fascinating Murder Mystery
Very 70's film, but a very, very clever murder puzzle mystery. Familiar cast of faces, and lots of clues, games, questions, and red herrings. Like James Coburn says in the movie, you will be able to figure it out if you just stay put.
Fashions by Joel Schumacher too!!
An excellent choice for murder mystery fans.
Dragonfly (2002)
Entertaining Date Movie, with Questions to Ponder
This was an entertaining film. Good, nothing great, just a good, solid thriller. It's "Ghost" meets "The Sixth Sense". I'm a big Kevin Costner fan, so I'm a little biased. It's got some intriguing questions to ponder about love after death and the afterlife. There's some good scary moments (which are being ruined by the trailers), and one too many endings, but it's a good, solid entertainment. What else can you expect during this part of the movie season??
In & Out (1997)
Something Fabulously Silly
Mainstream Hollywood takes on the closet issue in this very funny concoction. Very well done, with a truly exceptional cast, and the audience I saw this with was equally shocked from surprise and hilarity at the infamous kiss between two of the stars. A fun movie.
Nine to Five (1980)
Still as relevant...
Clever comedy that still speaks to office politics and discrimination today as it did 20 years ago. Terrific cast and a funny movie. If only these three ladies could find another script to get together again.
Death Becomes Her (1992)
Mad! Hel! Delish!
Very dark comedy about vanity is not for all tastes, but is a very, very funny movie. Meryl, Goldie, and Bruce are all fabulous in their roles, and the ladies look fabulous too. The amazing special effects flow seamlessly into the story. While the last third falls apart somewhat, it's a very mean, spiteful, bi***y movie about, well, two very mean, spiteful bi***es. When you're in the mood for something delicious, dark, and devious.
The Ref (1994)
Not your father's Christmas movie
I'm a sucker for dark comedies, so I really liked this funny, mean movie. It's definitely not for all tastes, but if you looking for a Christmas movie that will REALLY remind you of family bonding (no pun intended), then this one's pretty scathing. Plus Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis make a terrific anti-couple, and Dennis Leary is hysterical as the thief. Bonus: early Christine Baranski!! The film loses it's attitude towards the end, but the first two-thirds are bitingly funny.
Edge of Seventeen (1998)
Coming out and Coming of age in the Midwestern 80's
Very good, "relatable" coming of age film about a teenager discovering his homosexuality in 1980's Sandusky, Ohio. Terrific soundtrack, and nice performances (especially the fabulous Lea DeLaria) complement a sweet, tenderhearted film. Plus, it's filmed at one of the best amusement parks in the world.
The Mirror Crack'd (1980)
Moderately entertaining, old-fashioned whodunit
An amazing old-school cast, and one of Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson's last films, but the film is dull, and the acting is overdone to say the least. Pierce Brosnan appears as a co-actor of La Liz. Not bad, but one of the least of the Agatha Christie movies.
Tuesdays with Morrie (1999)
Beautiful coda to a great career
For me, at least, the emotions portrayed in tv-movies can get watered down thanks to commercials. Not so with this one, which had me in tears for most of the film. Another great performance from one of our all time greats, Jack Lemmon, plus a very good one from Hank Azaria, and a terrific message on how to be a better person. Highly, highly recommended.
The Cure (1995)
An excellent, well-acted film about AIDS from a child's viewpoint
Although flawed in it's view of homosexuals, this movie will shed light for the viewer about the myths and inaccuracies concerning AIDS. Despite the depressing subject matter, this film depicts a warm friendship between two boys, and will make you laugh as well as cry. Very well-acted by all, especially Joseph Mazzello and Brad Renfro. The language is a little strong, though appropriate, and it's an entertaining and intelligent film for the whole family. But remember to have the Kleenex ready!
