The Intern (I) (2015)

Amusing
22 July 2019
A lot amusing indeed. A seventy year old man ( Robert De Niro does a great role) tired of being retired with no aim in life decides to stand as a candidate intern in a fashion online company run by a demanding woman. He is accepted and and becomes the assistant of the company's owner and director. Being a nice, wise and helpful man he soon is in everybody's good graces including his director being not only useful for her in business matters but also her personal and private advisor. They soon become friemds. The whole story is told smoothly making a very entertaining slight comedy.very pleasant to follow.

The Youth in Taiwan
12 July 2019
Very good long movie (almost 4 hours) in every aspect: acting perfiormance cutting, quality of images and plot. In Taiwan the descenfants of those millions of Continental Chinese who fled away thereto after the Maoist takeover of their land don't feel well integrated in the Taiwanese society and form street gangs which fight one another and behave soemetimes violently. We follow this evolution in this movie in such realistyc and natural images and scenes that we Forget we are watching a movie and it looks like if we were watching real life scenes theough some window. The main plot tells the story of a young boy who is torn between opposite forces in society, at home and in love. A fascinating movie.

Toy Story 4 (2019)

Not bad
4 July 2019
Well yes the puppet toys figures are well conceived, shaped and acted like human beings. The story is thrilling enough and easy to follow and relative to the affectionate dependence that toys have to their children owners. It is about the problem that arise from the fact that when children get older they lose interest in their old toys. However I think it was bad taste to show a "human" toy torn by a cat though he remains alive. A movie that can be seen both by children and adults.

Good performance
2 July 2019
That's the best part of this movie. All the actors and actresses do an excellent job with a particular mention of Jason Statham as Parker the main character. The story itself is nor very interesting nor very thrilling. The simple plot of a man who despite being a professional thief has got his ethics and soon enters into conflict with his gang partners after a successful heist. This leads to him being beaten and shot by them who leave him on the field almost dying on a field by a road where a passing by family lifts him up and takes him to hospital from where he runs away soon after being conscious again (we doubt how a so badly wounded man can recover so quickly but there is no explanation for that in the movie). Then the rest of the movie shows his actions to meet the other guys in order to take his revenge. Meanwhile he meets a girl who helps him about his purpose. And that is all.

Beautiful
22 June 2019
It is pure image poetry through fabulous costumes, decor, scenes words and chants. It is the life of 18th century Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova told not by a conventional narrative but through his poems, gestures and attitudes. His mind, feelings. thoughts and spirit are always present in the shown images and scenes. It is nor a biographic movie in classical terms The atmosphere is religious. Tha chants, the dances, the choreography, the faces. the gestures and expressions of all characters are extraordinarily beautiful and inspire an extremely powerful aesthetic shape. There is no plot. Only a succession of images, scenes, words and chants. We are vibrating spiritually with what we see. By all means a movie to be seen.

Rather funny
29 May 2019
But rather serious too somehow in what concerns sentiment and feelings though somewhat disguised. Sandra Bullock does a great part as Margaret Tate a driving editor at a publisher in New Yoork. She is authoritarian and always ill-looking and ill-mannered to her subordinates including her assistant Andrew. But it happened that being a Canadian her visa had expired and she must be deported in 24 hours. She then imagines a scheme that includes a fake marriage with Andrew that would allow her to stay there. Andrew is more or less forced to accept this engagement after blackmailing her in doing him some proffessional favours. But the NS agent doesn't believe them and harass them with a strict inquiry to be done in a few days. To come off well at it they simulate a bridal trip to his home in Alaska where they meet his family and a lot of funny and unforeseen events happen till a surprising end, This is a movie that puts you in in good fettle and high spirits.

Old romantic movie
23 May 2019
Yes there are no more movies like this now. Nowadays it's shootings, rapes, killings, chases and explosions. Though this movie is is not exceptionally deep it is good enough in terms of sentiment, good feelings, love nd friendship. A powerful rich family living in a small town has got their own problems through the relationships they have with other citizens. A simple story after all but well directed by the competent hand of Orson Welles and well acted by all the performers. Characters are well depicted and go on acting and talking in truly reproduced ricly decorated interiors of the 19th century with the properly and adequate matching clothes of characters.

Showy and gaudy story
22 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In psychological and moral terms of course. And also overpowering and thrilling. The story of a man accused of horrible murders of several women but who always says repeatedly and energetically that he is innocent and being set up and framed by authorities and the police. He does ii in such a convincing way that we viewers believe him and keep all the time waiting for his acquittal and final proof of his innocence since besides that he behaves nicely to everybody namely to his girlfriend an unmarried mother. To our surprise in the very end he is convicted to death penaly and finishes to confess all thecrimes he had done. It looks like this story is based on some real and actual case.

Not bad in its kind
6 May 2019
In Colorado after the Civil War the minds and resolutions were still hot. A somewaht cruel ex- colonel of the federal army became a local judge. He appointed a friend and ex-captain of his army as local marshal. However both started soon to quarrel one another in the first place because both loved the same woman who after a short time married the judge and in second place because the marshall strongly reproached the judge's behaviour to send to the gallows suspect criminals with weak or no proof, Everything evolves itself in several confrontations between them and their men including verbal and physy ical disputes, shootings and chases. In the bottom of this there was also a previous conflict resultimg of the fact that territorial concessions belonging to men before the war while they were still civilians had been closed while they were in the war as conscripted soldiers and given to a mining corporation in the person of a local magnate. A not bad movie after all.

A bold resolute and courageous man
26 April 2019
And one who had also a difficulty in a good relatioship with other people for he had a bad temper. This is well shown through the excellent performance of Ashton Kutcher in the role of Steve Jobs the man who against all obstacles and objections pursued his dream of innovating positively the computer art and industry thus creating the Apple Computer company with great success after the first not so good results. This is what the movie is about and is shown clearly and very well.

The Sheepman (1958)

A courageous man
21 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a 1958 movie. A western. I know that westerns are out of fashion now But I still like to watch one of the good old ones. A classic one like this one with the traditional figures of the hero and the villain and where the good always wins over the evil despite occurring in a society of which law and order are practiacally absent. Here in a small town dominated by a powerul man a stranger (Glenn Ford) arrives with a flock of sheep to be raised there in a a place ruled by cattle ranchers who don't view favourably his purpose and therefore try to put him off by several ways under the direction of a powerful colonel who runs the town. This leads to several events and even a few shootouts since that stranger has come to this town not exactly with the purpose of raising sheep there but chiefly to settle accounts with some people there including the colonel for some old events between them. There is also a girl there (the beautiful Shirley McLaine) who is the colonel's fiancee but who feels attracted to the stranger from the beginning which brings also a few interesting scenes between them. A movie not very good but not bad either,

Also the secret life of human hature
18 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The world is a beehive indeed. South Carolina in 1964. Racism is still present despite the Civil Rights Act issued on that same year. But this is incidental in this movie though sometimes realistically shown in a few episodes.. This movie is chiefly about the young teenager Lily and her ideas and behaviour. Dakota Flamming performs her character in a magnificent and lovely way. She is haunted by her mother's memory who died when she was four years old in tragic circumstances and she wants to know the truth about it. Her father treats her badly and brusquely therefore she runs away from home in the company of a friendly black servant who is also her caretaker, to a town wher she knowa her mother had been. She founds there love and affection at the home of four coloured sisters. The story then develops itself in several tender beautiful episodes with a few tragic events. We can be shocked when we see a teenage girl kissing though superficially lips to lips a young man who is a friend but human nature is very complicated indeed, this movie shows it in a remarkable way and Lily is mentally a grown-up already.. In the end the mystery of her mother final actions is solved and Lily can feel herself fullfilled and accomplished at last.

Curious Movie
12 April 2019
This movie combines and mixes the Grimm fairy tales Cinderella, Little Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel in a remarkable way crossing and mixing them , inventing details and scenes that are nor in the original versions, putting the respective character in contact with one anther and adding as the main plot the story of a childless young couple of a baker and his wife trying to get rid of a curse an evil witch had laid upon them This movie can be divided in two distinct parts, the first one that goes until the climax of the main plot snd thst is magnificent in terms of images and characters+ performing and the final one that enters in a series of incongruences, issues and outcomes not ntirely explained that are unacceptable even ina fancy movie like this. Well but it is a good movie after all on the whole full of imagination and creativity

Powerful images but not so powerful story
10 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Powerful and meaningfull images and scenes indeed. Many more images than words indeed. But the story is a simple one not too dramatic. A foreign legion officer sees his power threatened by a new soldier that make him jealous of the attention that this new recruit may get from the commander whom, he Galoup, admires but dom't pay much attention to him. This is told by Galoup himself when he racalls is past military life at the Djibouti Golf so good til the new recruit, Sentain, appears. This jealously leads Galoup to plot the Sentain's down fall and this ends up badly for both. The scenes of the hard and tough physical militar training is visually strong, powerful and sometimes beautiful indeed but that's almost all.

Could be a good film If it was directed other way
30 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The story is good on its terms but it should be told in a more dramatic way. The direction and the performers acting are too slack, some scenes are not well explained and turn out incomprehensible and even some characters appear now and then that we don't know what they are doing in the plot. Two siblings, brother and sister lived apart from each other when the sister (Nénette) decides to come home again after their mother's death. Their parents had divorced and the father is estranged althoug he now wants to renew with his children what they however reject. The relationship between the siblings is not sentimentally easy since the girl is pregnant and we don't know by whom nor how. Well it can be seen but it could be better.

Africa indeed
18 March 2019
It is indeed Africa and a violent one truly depicted here. In a former French colony a white woman runs a coffee plantation in a zone ravaged by the fight between the army and rebels. A courageous woman who fights against everything and everybody (Isabelle Huppert),for besides the problems of the plantation she has got family problems with her ex-husband and a half-mad son. A movie that is directed in realistic style as almost documentar although not dimming the dramatic freature of the story. Also a real document of the relationship between Africans and Europeans. A movie worth to be seen though not exactly a masterpiece as far as a few behaviours are not utterly shown nor explained.

Stan & Ollie (2018)

Great performance
8 March 2019
The last moments of the career of those two terrific movie comedians that delighted me so much in my childhood and teenage times here admirably performed by the two great actors that impersonated them so faithfully. In the end of their career they do a final outing in the company of their wives to UK and Ireland where they achieved great success. Ollie was already rather ill for heart troubles but that didn't prevent him to enter in shows along with Stan. Dramatic and funny moments are shown along the film keeping you attentive and emotionally riveted.

That's politics
20 February 2019
Yes, politics is just that. Not with is shown to the public, the speeches, the meetings, the assemblies, the rallies, etc but really what goes on behind the scenes in backstage, the intrigues, the secret alliances or political misalliances, the agreements and disagreements, the conspiracies amd even the hidden interventions and pressures from wives, children and relatives. That is brilliantly shown in this movie that tells us about the former vice-presudent of USA Dick Cheney's career whose influence on American policy was very important and effective. A movie that that teaches you a lot of things and reveals many facts that you would possibly ignore.

Entertaining enough that's all
15 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Well, yes, it keeps you pleased for about two hours though it has a few unlikelihoods and some psycological incongruities. A Florida police chief is having an affair with a married woman who is separated (or so it seems) from her husband. A doctor tells her she has cancer and only 6 months to live. The police chief (Denzel Washington) takes possession of a lot of Money that had been apprehended during a crime investigation and gives it to her to pay for a treatment in Switzerland that could save her life but is very expensive. From then on things get too complcated since there is a fire that supposedly kills the woman and her husband after she had altered an insurance policy in favour of her lover. We'll soon see that everything was planned by the woman and her husband to get possession of all the money since they are not dead at all and she has no cancer. In fact the "doctor" that had said so in the presence of the police chief was an accomplice of her husband and no doctor at all.Till the end the movie focus itself in the attempts of the police chief to get the money back since he is being pressed by DEA agents to give it to them in the lawsuit proceeding terms and he is now aware of the cheat he had fallen into. Well, anyway Denzel Washington has a good role as the police chief.

Portrait of a brilliant mad man
12 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
And Willem Dafoe does an excellent job as the painter Van Gogh, a very difficult role indeed. This movie tells with great accuracy and quality the last years of the life of that great painter. though the circumstances of his death as seen in the movie don't coincide exactly with those told in his oficial biography, Anyway this is a great movie with beautiful images and very expressive ones mainly the close-up of the characters' faces when talking. The dramatic life of Van Gogh is deeply shown through his physical and psychological crisis and teh conversations he has with other people that are near him.A very good movie under all its aspects.

The Mule (2018)

Great performance
6 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It is indeed the best part of the movie the great performance of Clint Eastwood as an 90 year old man and a Korean war veteran who gets into trouble after suffering foreclosure because of the failure of his business as a daylillies grower. He accepts then to be a mule carrying drugs at the orders of a Mexican gang. He does it so efficiently that he earns the admiration and respect of his boss and gets a lot of money from his mule runs till the moment when is boss is killed by internal rivalries which coincided with his boss and the gang's head change with whom he enters in conflict since they think he is too erratic and doesn't follow the gang rules. He uses the money he earns as a mule to get his home out of foreclosure and also for benefaction purposes such as paying for his granddaughter Ginny education and for the repair of the VA building, After a lot of vicissitudes and incidents occurred during his several runs he ends up being arrested, tried and convicted to prison after having pleaded guilty despite his lady lawyer efforts to prove extenuating circumstances thus escaping to be killed by the gangsters he was working for and who had planned it. In the end we see him growing lilies in the penitentiary garden. An interesting story filmly well narrated.

The Artist and the Quince Tree
4 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
During several weeks a panter and draughtsman tries obsessively to capture the sunlight through the leaves of a quince tree he is depicting, following in the least details the tree evolution and its fructification in the course of authmn and winter. Everything goes on calmly and quietly, showing us all the artist's movements and also the conversations he has with other people mainly with a long time friend who is also an artist, discussing all the painting technical details. As in other Erice's films everything goes on calmly and quietly and with some monotony, Everything goes like if we were watching a documentary instead of a fiction movie. As a matter of fact the actors and actresses represent themeselves in person and not any fiction characters. And the movie ends up in a somewhat odd way with the artist having a dream about memories of his past life. It is a movie that in its kind has neither action nor drama or comedy. Not so bad but only just that,

Curious relationship
28 January 2019
Indeed. An Italian-American working in a nightclub in the sixties of last century accepts the job of driver of an African-American pianist during a tour the latter is going to do in the Deep South. Their very diferent cultures and minds soon lead to situations of deep disagreement. Nevertheless as the tour goes on they begin to be closer to each other and they end up not only undertanding and respecting each other but also becoming respectful friends. This is speciallly patent when durig the tour the negro pianist is a target of racial discrmination and even of physical aggression and always gets help from his driver. A movie that shows excellently how was the American society at that time particularly in the Deep South and how the relationship between those two so different men develops itself.

A flash on American society
26 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A flash lasting for 5 moving days. The movie story rolls on at intervals of lovely music and beautiful songs moments. In those short intervals we see dialogues of love, intrigue, dispute, ambition and images of an electoral campaign for the President from a candidate that never appears in person. The whole movie goes on at this rythm leaving us anxious to know how it will end. And it ends tragically indeed. A well made, directed and performed movie but not much good for the lack of a particularly interesting plot.

Powerful
23 January 2019
The tragic life of Mary Stuart queen of Scotland is powerfully shown in this movie with superb scenes of intrigue, treason, love and violence. It respects the historical truth in what is essential and important and in what concerns details we don't know if they were true or not but a film director is free to use his imagination providing he does not change the historical truth and he does it powerfully in this movie. The characters are very convincing and all the performers do an excellent work. A movie that keeps you captivated from the beginning till the end
