Tôkyô Joshi Zukan (2016)
Redpilled, that Bruce guy doesn't get it
This show is absolutely refreshing in that it spits in the face of materialism and corporatism. Our main character Aya struggles with finding what truly equates to happiness in life. The insights into societal pressures, the mindsets that infest city dwellers as a result and that oh-so abstract concept of mortality is poignant and more than relevant.
"After rain comes fair weather."
Also that Bruce guy doesn't get it. The show isn't asking you to relate to the character's obsession with status and materialistic gain. It asks you to sympathize with the main character unwittingly being tricked into romanticizing these aspects of life that do not equate to anything even resembling happiness. This is summarized by Ryo's question to Aya "Do you still see Tokyo as a vibrant city?" and underpinned by Aya's reaction to being told she is a woman to be admired in her home town of Akita. You can see her absolute turmoil in the irony of ultimately getting what you want but not enjoying it. She is now an example to be followed straight into the abyss of wage slavery.
