Kukushka (2002)
Boldly introduced in Telluride as `The film that will win the Best Foreign Film Oscar'.
This movie is a great deal of fun. It also reveals the horrors, difficulties, and craziness of war. It has a wonderful, artistic look at a near-death situation that is very touching. A really great film that should not be missed.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Very good film, but not the best ever...
May contain spoilers...
This is a very well done film. Really, quite good. I would much rather see it be the "Best Picture" rather than something so bizarre as Mulholland Dr. which seems to be getting all the art hype.
Having not read the books, my biggest disappointment was the end. The scene faded and I was expecting another scene -- nope, just the Director's credit -- a real let down after such good stuff.
Otherwise this was a completely entertaining film. Others have commented on "you like fantasy or you don't" -- well, I tried to read "The Hobbit" when I was a teen and just plain was not interested. The film of this story was very interesting, very well acted, and just a fine production.
Making viewers wait an entire year is a mistake. Are the producers going to re-release this just before the release the second? Perhaps they will release it on video a month before the second one shows. Another user commented that this was a "wait for it on video" movie. Well, I like the big screen and while there are movies I could say that about, this one may or may not fit that category. Having to wait a year, I will likely await the release of the set on video and see the other two at home.
This is a very good film, however, it does not rate being the all-time #1 film... I suspect that the voters that have scored it a "1" are trying to make that point. Nobody should be rating this below 7 (IMO) but almost 10,000 10's are (IMO) a reflection on the maturity of the voters as well as a reflection on how many great films they have not yet seen...
Billy Elliot (2000)
My new "favorite film". It will move you!
I can't say enough about this movie. It went from a movie described by IMBD as one of 2000's sleepers to my favorite film with a single viewing. I rented the DVD (because of the IMBD note) and immediately purchased a copy - that was about a month ago. I don't know how many times I have watched it, I've lost count - I just love it. It has wonderful performances, good music, funny and serious scenes - I just can't say enough. Rated "R" for the language alone (OK, blue-collar families in Britain say the "F" word a lot) - perhaps you don't want your youngest children seeing it, but otherwise put on your "F"-word filter and see this movie! Some have criticized the ending - well, I liked it - it closes the story and reminds us of a lasting friendship. Put aside any biases you may have (particularly about boys doing ballet) and see this film with an open mind - it will move you.

Shadow of the Vampire (2000)
A good fright, with some real fun too!
I saw this film at the Telluride Film Festival and really enjoyed it. DeFoe is GREAT as the vampire. Malkovich does a great job balancing dealing with his crew (from whom he hides the true nature of the Star) and his Vampire.
Take the time to rent Nosferatu before you see this one. This is a film you don't want to miss.
