A decent Sci Fi Cloned Picture
Believe it or not despite the preposterous story this is a watchable sci fi yarn.
Probably because the actors playing Kayla, Randy and Zach give decent performances,
Whilst making a movie about a small town, the film-makers discover the inhabitants are being replaced by look-a-like alien clones....hmmmm...
As others have stated this picture seems aimed at a teenage market and is similar to movies of the same genre; nevertheless many people will be new to this story line and there is sufficient entertainment for me to give a rating of:
This Movie needs to Disappear!
A book- writing husband and his wife fed up in their relationship go on a boat trip with his girlfriend plus the boats skipper.
Later the husband disappears. Was he murdered or did he jump etc?
Everyone in this movie is dull and boring.
The pace of the film is far too slow; there is no excitement or real interest.
Only the ocean and beach scenes are worth any merit or a rating:
In a Valley of Violence (2016)
Excellent Traditional Western
Super movie, paying homage to the genre of the western flick.
Thank you Netflix.
Stranger with his dog in town stands up to a bully who takes revenge...then all hell breaks out...
The canine steals the show!
All the players give full throttle tongue- in-cheek performances and not a weak link in the whole picture.
Great production including the opening credits and the realistic location and town depiction is brilliant:
The Perfection (2018)
Splice Girls....but really victims
Movie starts well but descends into black comedy and total nonsense wanting to portray all males as evil.
Music school prodigies follow different life paths but meet again in the future.
They are both at the mercy of a type of Frankenstein figure who is really an evil child molester...
The acting in this movie is uneven-of course poor by the non females- to add to the ludicrous story; though Logan Browning more or less is the best player with a hysterically funny performance. Pluses include the music score, scenes shot in China, and the erotic love making episodes.
ironically the Cello as an instrument steals the show; a magnificent instrument giving out fabulous music.
But as the script and story is so very, very stupid it gives the impressive of a movie made up as it goes along and written by teenagers in angst.
The aim of the picture is to satisfy someone's agenda:
Spartacus Out of the Closet...
Thank you Netflix for having this available. Despite around 60 years since it was released still mostly watchable.
There was a real Spartacus though this picture is simply the makers fantasy about a slave who wants to be free so he fights the establishment. Spectacular action and a cast of thousands..
The British players totally steal the show. Tony Curtis almost ruins it with his New York accent and wooden performance; plus he and all the actors spout 1950/60's haircuts et al which makes a mockery of the intended era.
However there is sufficient entertainment in this movie to give it a decent rating but a mark is deducted for the appalling Tony Curtis. The film also portrays the latter as the gay toy boy of some of the main protagonists in the movie. I do not know if that aspect was in the original movie in 1960 or revealed only in the restored version.
All in all:
Those People (2015)
Totally Unlikeable People
After 10 minutes I stopped watching this film. Spoilt brat rich kid in a drama queen relationship with a loser..maybe he will find someone else...but who cares?!
Nothing to like or want to know about any person in the movie:
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Celebrate Musical Genius!
This is the best movie I have seen this year and amongst the best ever.
It is compelling throughout with super music and convincing believable players all inspired by real events.
The show-stopping stand out performance comes from Rami Malik who deserves a clutch of awards as does the film itself and everyone associated with it.
Some professional critics and others have for what ever reason tried to be critical of this movie but once again they are totally wrong and the public ticket sales confirms the quality of the movie. If some of the seedier aspects of the true events are not fully shown then need to remember that the central focus of this movie is the music.
Freddy Mercury was the lead singer of the band Queen and the film shows how the band and their music evolved and at the same time explains the life and demise of the bands principal artist at a time when AIDs began its' cruel epidemic.
This picture is a celebration of the music and artistry of genius musicians and showmanship and thankfully does not dwell so much on the plague of AIDs but when the movie does focus on that subject, it does so with devastating effect.
There is one scene When Freddy Mercury is leaving the AIDs clinic and a fellow suffering has a ever so brief exchange with him: that is heart-breaking. Another scene when Freddy tell his band members: "I've got it", and they are clueless as to what he is talking about. That sadly sums up the previous apathetic attitude of the straight world to gay issues.
A lot of the public will of been perplexed with Freddy's apparent sexual preferences and the woman in his life. The movie unravels and explains it. Because of his ethnic background and the pressures on him he needed to be straight or believe that he was; or if not then the most he could do was to claim bisexuality. He was of course always a gay even though Freddy resisted for a lot of his life that realization.
Adding to the magical music and fine acting is a delightfully amusing but insightful script and with wonderful presentation and production I can award:
Teenage Cocktail (2016)
How To ruin a good movie
Take a potentially clever story, cast some first rate performers, add in some decent music then there should be a good movie..........yes?
Not with this one.
The picture is spoilt by the film makers; either the director or editor or both.
A couple of love birds find a way to make money on the net doing "porn" but ultimately things go wrong...
To make it worse: the ending is given away in the first few minutes of the film!
Whoever directed this movie seems to be still learning their trade as to many single shots and muddled sequences. I was also confused between the creepy villain in the picture and the actor playing the leads father.
What should of been a high flying 8 and a half is reduced to 4 and a half generously rounded up by me despite the awful presentation of the flick:
The Pastor's Wife (2011)
The last line in this movie makes it a certain winner!
A riveting drama based on true events.
Pastor with wife and kids seem to be the perfect family. Until that is.... the wife shoots her husband to death.
But there is more to the story then meets the eye...
Rose McGowan gives a show stopping performance in this classily crafted and compelling real life drama:
The Invitation (2015)
If you invite a Charles Manson look-a-like to a party....
...then do not expect anything other than a hysterical time.
A group of friends and others get an invitation to a party.
But of course if your are in LA in a house with druggies, has been or actual hippies ,manic depressives etc., then what do you expect?!
Enjoyable yarn this on Netflix!
Its really what the British call a black comedy, and the mostly convincing drama queen cast allow me to reward the movie with::
Framed by My Fiancé (2017)
Another winner from Lifetime Movies!
Superior thriller which is worth watching.
A high flying lawyer about to become a judge frames his fiancé to take the blame for a car accident involving a death. Topical the subject of persons about to be called to the bench who are accused of crimes!
Plenty of twists and turns in the story and the "baddie" lawyer/judge just about steals the show with his performance.
I am quite impressed with some of these Lifetime Movies which are often as good as anything both Hollywood and Netflix can make.
6 and a half rounded up:
22 July (2018)
A fitting tribute to Viljar Hanssen & all the Victims
An evil individual committed hideous mass murders in Norway on 22 July. This movie attempts to portray those events. One of the victims is Viljar Hanssen and his bravery and heroism epitomizes the spirit of not only himself but of a whole nation.
This must be one of the best films ever made by Netflix.
The whole production, direction and portrayals are first rate.
As the movie will be watched by the whole world there seems to be good reason to present the movie in English and in the event that factor adds rather than detracts from understanding the true horror of what happened.
No dramatic re-enactment no matter how good can ever really fully show or explain the pain and dreadfulness of this occurrence-which continues- but a least this picture makes a valiant effort to do so:
Do not expect Fantasy island...
This movie is sufficiently entertaining to watch to the end though it borders on black comedy and all in all is totally ludicrous. A campy horror flick.
Apparently set in another era-though the beards and haircuts make the men look like regulars in a bear gay cub-there is this island inhabited by cult sadists. Our hero needs to go there undercover to rescue his sister.
Indeed the lead actor really deserves an award for the face contortions he pulls throughout the movie.
Plenty of gore, blood and violence is the highlight or lo-light of this picture depending on your preference.
A long movie though as I lasted the full length I can give it:
Big Driver (2014)
Maria Bello is a Superstar
The lead actress in this movie gives a staggeringly superb performance.
She is a famous fiction writer who becomes the victim of a horrendous crime and decides to seek revenge.
The problem with this film is that it is presented in the screwball style(the story comes from Stephen King) which turns it into what the English call a 'black comedy' with imaginary characters and objects speaking out loud and the dead talking after their demise. Despite these challenges, the lead player still manages to make this a compelling view:
Hunt for the I-5 Killer (2011)
Compelling drama based on real events
This is an engrossing tale about a serial killer.
"The true story of the year-long manhunt for the killer who raped and murdered his way up and down the I-5 corridor through California, Washington, and Oregon for over a year in 1981, leaving 44 victims in his wake. "
I am very impressed with this movie as it keeps the viewer engaged about the hunt for and activities of a monster.
But can they catch this mad man, whoever he is?
All the players especially the leads give first rate performances and this movie deserves at least;
Hold the Dark (2018)
I am left in the dark...
After less than 30 minutes I turned off this trash. Shame on you Netflix!
In some snow bound remote outpost wolves are kidnapping and eating babies.
A mother claims her child is one of the victims and asks some grunting mountain man for help...she seems to fancy him....but there is the woman's war vet husband overseas who I assume will return home soon...
At this point the woodenly fake acting and nonsensical story was enough for me and I luckily have better things to do with my life than be bored by this garbled garbage:
Holy Hell (2016)
A Dumb Bernie Madoff type Meets Dumber Stooges
A fascinating yet morbid documentary type movie showing how a cult leader is able to manipulate a group of gullible young people to be his slaves and do whatever he wishes.
The cult leader is a ludicrous drama queen like figure who is probably insane. He is totally repulsive and devotedly self-centered; he has found a way to spent his life doing whatever pleasures suit himself to the detriment of those stupid enough to view him seriously. The followers-so called- are on the whole a bunch of ever so weak individuals needing to find meaning in their lives so that plays into the hands of the lunatic leading them.
I do not wish to be unsympathetic to the victims but I ask rhetorically who in their right mind would fall for such nonsense?
The maker of the film is also one of the followers and even if there may be some lack of independent reporting there is no doubt the "master" is a criminal and ought to be in prison....
Where Eagles Dare (1968)
Carnaby Street(1968) meets the 3 Stooges...
A complete nonsense of a movie. Totally dated with a ludicrous plot.
This movie was made in 1968 and the hairstyles, dress, make up and mannerisms all mirror that era.
A group of soldiers who all are said to speak perfect German go on a mission into the heart of the Nazi stronghold. But everyone speaks English!
But there is a double agent in the Melee...so who is it.....do I care?!
No, because I needed to turn off this rubbish well before it was over; especially when every single German soldier is portrayed as a kind of 'we have ways of making you talk' style, the way those in Hollywood want us to believe...
Can fool all the people most of the time!
Just above the lowest rating due to a few decent wintery scenes:
High Noon for the Wild Bunch
A motley group of outlaws terrorize a town. The townsfolk are mostly "losers"; but can a part time sheriff reverse the cowardly nature of the town?
This is a gritty, compelling western with fine performances from a cast containing some hollywood legends.
Pleased to say this movie is on a par with many of the top rated westerns and certainly worthy of a high vote:
In need of a heart transplant.....
The only reason I give this above the lowest vote is I somehow I lasted to the end of this film.
Poorly written and produced this picture cannot decide if it is a black comedy or a thriller.
All the actors give half hearted, mostly unconvincing performances and do not take their work seriously.
The film has some nasty murder scenes which is not surprising as it is about a love obsessed teen who is also a physco. To make it worse the play tries to suggest we have sympathy or empathy for any of the characters. One and a half, rounded up = 2/10.
This is a surprisingly good intense and taut drama/thriller.
A couple of long time friends take a trip to the highland forests for a shooting expedition when a terrible accident leads to even more tragedy.
A key feature of this movie is the location settings which are beautiful on the one hand yet deadly and scary on the other. Local people in a depressed area are portrayed as savages though eventually a scintilla of humanity is revealed.
All the performers are outstanding in their portrayals; the ultimate conclusion to the film I found compelling and just about realistic.
In my opinion any slowness in the pace of this picture is justified and I can gladly give this picture 7 and a half rounded up, hence:
Worst time travel movie ever!
A while into this picture I shut it off. It claims to be a time travel picture about a student who can go back in time through the flooring in a hotel.
However the film is totally ruined by:
1. a snails pace muddled storyline-
2. actors who are fake and unable to be convincing-
3. made worse by choosing the most unattractive and boring players imaginable-
4. sloppy and tedious direction and presentation.
I ask myself who on earth produces this trash?!
Cut Bank (2014)
Yes, and I also hate small town mentality too!
A fairly dull yet watchable film noir black comedy.
A young man video- taping his girl friend "accidentally" witnesses a murder which he happens to catch on camera.
Whoever made this movie not only hates small towns but despises everyone who lives in such places.
There are all sorts of wacky odd ball characters in this picture and despite it being ludicrous it has a certain low brow Fargo charm about it.
4 and a half rounded up=
A Quiet Place (2018)
"Plan 9 From Outer Space": Updated!
A family are in desperate survival mode as alien creatures have taken over the earth and any loud noise causes the monsters to attack what is left of humanity.
Yes it certainly is, and the theme in this picture is mostly unoriginal and the baddies just up-dated clones from other sci-fi pics..
Despite this movie being science fiction it could have been so much better if the story line had some ingenuity, yet as it stands the whole crux of the play is totally ludicrous.
A great pity as the acting is first class, the direction and design excellent and plenty of super music.
Had there been even just a marginally credible premise, then I could of awarded maybe up to 8 and a half, but as it is, the best I can do is:
Red Sparrow (2018)
Tinker Tailor Sexy Spy!
This movie is more a comedy picture with plenty of soft porn and eye candy provided by the lead actress.
A leading ballerina in what seems to be 1960's Soviet Union is compelled to be a spy by way of going to "Whore--school"; there then follows all sorts of intrigue and double dealing.
The film also manages to bring in more current issues such as gender equality, gay rights and lots of ways for women to fight back against men who take advantage of them.
Sufficiently entertaining yet totally ludicrous there are also plenty of fake Eastern European accents speaking English and clearly this flick is seeking a part two.
It gets a 6 and a half rounded down from me.
