This one has joan crawaford, robert taylor, greer garson. Spring byington, herb marshall, mona barrie. Sadly, it was not as catty and naughty as it might have been... the film code was in full force by now, and i'm sure some of the good stuff was left on the cutting room floor. Might be fun to sweep it up and see what we missed! Mary is an author, and uses her writing as an excuse to cozy up to a married man. But her friend tries to steer her away. What would happen if the two women met up face to face? Joan is very elegant in this one...always wearing beautiful, flowing gowns. Even dolled up when she's out gardening. Costumes by adrian, of course. It's pretty good. Released august of 1941, just before the united states was pulled into the war. Not much humor, and not much chemistry between the stars. Feels very cardboard, as joan was probably making sure she had the best lines and the best costumes. It's okay. Fun banter between the two lead women. Can't say too much here... don't want to give away spoilers. It was nominated for best decoration. This was a couple years before joan did mildred pierce.
The wanderings and musings of a donkey in poland. According to the director, there are numerous observations and lessons within the story. Some to be discovered and interpreted by the viewer. When the circus goes under, eo ends up wandering around on his own. Some really interesting artistic images, with various colors and backgrounds. Music also plays a huge role here; the director chose some great music to match the moods and action. Some things are explained in the trivia section here, but many things are not. It's an interesting film, if you have the patience. This probably won't be for everyone. Not a lot of dialog, naturally. Some violence, it gets rather preachy, and ends pretty dark. Nominated for best foreign feature. Directed by jerzy skolimowski. I have seen films in which he has acted, but this was the first film i have seen where he directed. This film has also won TONS of film fest awards.
The domineering force that is shirley shirley maclaine. Throw in ricki lake, brendan fraser, and a fun but loyal butler, played by miguel sandoval. It's a farce, with the necessary case of mistaken identity. Connie and her baby are taken in by the winterburne family. Because they really think she is someone else. Will connie ever tell them the truth? And will she get tossed out for it? There are some funny bits in here, but really, it's nothing too new. Stretching that lie out as long as possible is the backbone of so many storylines. Everyone knows it will probably blow up at some point. I DID guess the ending, but i picked the wrong perpetrator. Directed by richard benjamin, who was never really my favorite director. Also interesting that one of the screenplay writers is phoef sutton, who had written so many episodes of cheers and boston legal. Based on the book by cornell woolrich.
