Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973)
One of the most frightening movies I've ever seen!
One of the most frightening movies I've ever seen! Made during the "Hey-day" of the Made-For-Tv genre (along with other greats like Stranger Within, Crowhaven Farm, Terror on the Beach, Where Have all the People Gone) it still holds up today. I will be forever thankful I found a used copy in a video store and have been able to relive the terror I did upon first viewing at 8yrs of age. I still tend to RUN up the basement stairs *just in case* any ghouls should be trying to reach out, grab my ankles and pull me away into oblivion.
The Broadway Melody (1929)
A beautiful little deco gem of movie
A beautiful little deco gem of movie - complete with all the glamour and over the top acting you would expect for 1929 - but that's the whole point! A fantastic little time capsule. Supposedly a story of "sisters" trying to make it big on Broadway, but when they kiss each other on the mouth it is clear there is a whole hidden sub-plot here of unspoken love. Pay attention to the dialogue and see if you don't agree (ie. "If I loved a girl like Queenie..." easily *could* have been written as "If I loved SOMEONE like Queenie" or "If I loved A GUY the way you love her/Queenie..." but was not.) The girls refer to one fellow as "uncle" but other than that, no real mention of home, or family, or shared growing up experiences which would allow one to conclude they were REAL sisters as opposed to really close friends calling each other "sis". If there really is a homosexual sub-plot and I'm not just imagining things, it's been brilliantly and tastefully done.
