The Hornet (1998)

Bad work by Ljubisa Samardzic
26 October 1999
Indeed a very disappointing piece of work by Ljubisa Samardzic. The charming "Borivoje Surdilovic" from some old times has let, apparently without much resistance, the recent Serbian nationalistic and anti-Albanian histeria pollute his artistic endeavor. What he produced is so cheap and sad. The film does nothing but reinforce old Serbian stereotypes about Albanians as hopeless primitives and about Serbs being totally cooler that the whimpy Westerners. Wrapped in a transparent veil of a light crime story, the only value of the plot is that some of the premeditated and stubborn-beyond-repair among the war-exhausted Serbian audience will enjoy yet another demonstration, or better "proof" of how primitive and evil those darn Squiptars are. How insensitive of you, dear Ljubisa. We used to love your warm and human, no matter how troubled characters from your early works. Even your brief role in "The Premeditated Murder", a recent film after a book by one of the best modern Serbian writers, Slobodan Selenic, was such. Ljubisa, your homeland has been through so much trouble recently. The last thing it needed is adding oil to the fire. Many side remarks in the film are offensive to Albanians. Even if some might believe that stereotypes about them are true or even entertaining, these are too subtle times to bring them up and stir the poop. You should've known better, Ljubisa.

Apart from the very strong, rather unfortunate, political overtones, the film is slow, dragging, and arduous. It just failed to capture. Whoever is acquainted with the animosity between the Serbs and Albanians, and given that the film comes from the Serbian camera, could've predicted just about every next scene in the movie. The attempt to mix in a little Romeo-Juliett romance between the two youths from the opposing groups was weak at best. The film was just too political. The acting, apart from Ljubisa's, his movie daughter's and the bad villain's, is quite bad. A thumb down. Sorry.

Excellent

Excellent movie. Though initially suspicious of this movie (how can a stupid Hollywood comedy about high school kids be any different than all others), I ended up delighted. This is something different. What makes the film great is an excellent cast (the youngsters from this film are unbelievable) and the absence of that stupid consumer-society predictability that colors all those commercial Hollywood productions. The extent of predictability still found here is excused by our sympathy to the protagonists and so familiar troubles they go through. A thumb up. Bravo!

A moving lyrical story.
27 July 1999
I was truly touched watching this movie. It is so lovely, moving and capturing. The story is sad. The performances are brilliant. For those who (think they) understand the Bosnian mentality, this film is perfectly done. Others will have harder time appreciating its subtleties, but still like it. I promise.

Good film, but not Wertmueller's best
27 July 1999
As always, Giannini and Melato are the shining stellas in yet another of the Wertmueller's movies. The two of them alone make this film worth seeing (though this time it's more Giannini since Melato's role is not as demanding as in some later films). However, compared to some other realizations by the same director-two-actors trio, this film does not strike as equally capturing and consistent in its message. Heavily leaning against social issues (remember "Swept Away"?), but bringing to the front the romance/fidelity/honor plot, it apparently fails to round up either of them. Not even the diversion into the familiar Italian-honor humor towards the end of the film is able to pull out the hanging feeling. Those who love the genre will still not regret spending their time with this movie.

One of the best from Croatia
21 July 1999
One of the best movies produced by Croatian cinematography. Yet another living proof for the Seinfeldian paradigm: "a story about nothing", told in a loving way, with great cast and charming music, can be so much stronger than any of those modern special-effect Hollywood films. In fact there is a special effect which makes this movie so great. It's love.

A nice movie
19 March 1999
A very nice movie, no doubt. It was praised to me by my French friends beyond usual, but after I saw it, I kind of felt it was not as unforgettable as expected. Still very good, but not epic. I saw more memorable French movies.
