Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Excellent Look, Intriguing Plot . . . Abrupt Ending
The film has an excellent look. The lighting, art direction is just perfect, definitely art house. kudos to stanley kubrick. Very good performance by Nicole Kidman, especially in those nude scenes. Excellent performance by Tom Cruise. The downside is the fact that this movie took more than a year to shoot and the outcome if different than expected. First of all, the ending was totally abrupt, I felt the movie should have continued on after that because I felt that things had been left unanswered. For example, who put the mask on their bed at the end?? Overall, I would give it 2 and a half stars.
Lake Placid (1999)
Lake Placid had it all. It had a little bit of romance, a little bit of drama and not only one, but two 30 feet long man-eating alligators. The movie did well OK in theaters, it did reclaim the cost to make it and a little on the side. I am really hoping that the rentals are going to make up for it. I was in suspense the whole way through the movie. The casting was good and the acting was superb.
As Cheesy as it gets . . .
I didn't like this movie, I thought it would be good, but I was wrong. the creature was obviously a cheesy creation made out of paper mache and green paint. Nothing more. Bad acting AND no notable stars.
Practical Magic (1998)
The Witches of Eastwick with a twist of lemon . . . .
I liked Practical Magic a lot. I didn't think I would because it was about two sisters and seems to be a "chick flick". However, there was a lot more to the movie than the relationship between Gillian and Sally Owens. For example, Gillian is possessed by the soul of her cruel mate after Sally accidentally kills him with too much magic. Also, the Owens curse plays a pivotal role in the movie. I was surprised by the movie and I know it should have made a lot more money, but the timing of the release was probably wrong. Good actors, and good direction. I bet the book is good too.
200 Cigarettes (1999)
The music, the sex, the love . . . awesome!!!
This movie was great. I loved the music and the plot. All these characters are trying to get to this one party and their desires hinder them from doing so. Val wants the guys and Stephie wants to go home. It was funny, even though it isn't going to find the heart of everyone. Very good !!!!
