A Kid Like Jake (2018)
An emotional journey
This film tells a story of two parents who struggle to come to terms with their young sons gender non conformity.
I had no idea what the story was about when I watched it, so initially I thought it was about tiger mums. Then, when the gender subplot kicks in, I find it fascinating and emotional. It tells a compelling journey to get to where they need to get to. I'm impressed by the film. Well done!
A Star Is Born (2018)
A really powerful experience
I heard good things about this film, but I dismissed them as I thought it was just because Lady Gaga was in it.
After watching it, I have to say it's even better than what people say it is. The story is very engaging and powerful. The songs are beautiful, and the visual presentation of every scene is great. The story flows naturally, and draws you in. Very very good story telling.
There is a scene when Bradley is waiting for Lady Gaga to finish rehearsal, the foreground is the background while the foreground is the background. It's clever and intriguing. I find this film a powerful experience.
The Cakemaker (2017)
A powerful and effective story
This is a very beautiful story of a man and a woman grieving the loss of the same man. It is simple and has no grand effects. It is however touching, effective and convincing. I find this story powerful.
Am I a Murderer? (2018)
I watched it on TV some weeks ago, and I have to say that the title itself captivated me. The story is presented in a balanced manner, with interviews from the claimed murderer, the victim's daughter, policemen involved with the case, and other people involved as well. It is a documentary on an interesting subject, and viewers have to form their own opinion on whether the claim is true or not.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Even Queen was before my time, and belongs to another culture that I did not grow up in, I still find it a truly great. It tells a fascinating story of Freddy Mercury, and there is not one second of slack in the story. The story becomes poignant and emotional many times, touching me with tears for a good hour.
There are lots of music films that look like a contrived extended music video, but in here it is certainly not the case. The music is great, and I actually want more of it. I don't usually watch film twice, but this one I would surely watch another time.
Incredibles 2 (2018)
The story is fun but very predictable. It is entertaining nonetheless.
This film tells the story of a woman who comes up with a multitude of ways to play dead.
The story is light hearted, despite the topic of playing dead. It is more romance and drama than comedy. It requires a lot of thinking to make sense of her motive, and I can't say I have completely figured it out.
First Man (2018)
This film tells the story of the years leading to the first man walking on the moon.
The story focuses on the human aspect of the journey, which makes it more engaging than a focus on the technical aspect of the hugely complex mission. The conflicting feelings Neil Armstrong has days before the mission is really well depicted. I enjoyed watching it.
Tung cau (2017)
A little disappointed
This film tells the story of a young man who is sentenced to a correctional facility in Hong Kong because he attacked a policeman.
The trailer was very interesting, but the actual story wasn't that engaging. The mistreatment of inmates were horrible, but that was really the only thing that was keeping the film going. The mistreatments were portrayed in a matter of fact manner, with little psychological portrayal. Even the subplot about the righteous officer feels contrived. I had high hopes but was left a little disappointed. It's nowhere as captivating as "Midnight Express"
An intriguing story
This film tells the story of an activist who goes missing.
I haven't heard of this real life story before, so I find the story intriguing and engaging. It is quite sad that her son didn't care about her disappearance at all. It is also sad that she seems to have alienated everyone around her, when all she has done is to speak her mind.
Bel Canto (2018)
An alright film
This film tells the story of dozens of private opera concert goers, who are held hostage by a militant group.
I like the actors and actresses in the film. Julianne Moore is the big draw for me. The story is less intense as I thought it would be, given the fact that it is a hostage film. The romances are a little contrived too, but perhaps it could really happen under such extraordinary circumstances. Overall, I think the film is ok to pass time with.
Secret Superstar (2017)
A sweet film about breaking free and chasing dreams
This film tells the story of an Indian girl who chases her dream of becoming a singer in an oppressive environment.
It is an inspiring film because it tells you that nothing is impossible. If you dare to dream, everything can be within reach. The characters are charismatic, and the story is touching. It is a sweet film about breaking free and chasing dreams, despite the circumstances that seem impossible.
Tom of Finland (2017)
A captivating insight into an artist's life
I would not have know about Tom of Finland's life if it was not for this film, especially the fact that his activities were highly illegal and the fact that he was under persecution. I think this film offers a captivating insight into an artist that was way ahead of his time.
A sweet romantic comedy
This film tells the story of a poor woman who gets her revenge from a rich man.
Putting the ethical and legal issues aside, this film is really cute and romantic. It makes me feel really happy about the unlikely couple. It shows that there is something else other than money in the world that can make a person be fulfilled. It shows that honest hard work pays off. I enjoyed this sweet romantic comedy.
Book Club (2018)
A nice romantic comedy
It is great there is a romantic comedy for the older generation. The plot is quite funny and tasteful, and does not require gross jokes which is refreshing. The performances are good as well. I enjoyed it.
An unexpectedly sweet comedy
This film tells the story of a correctional officer who escorts a prisoner for 36 hours for a death bed visit.
The plot sounds like a heavy drama, but actually it is a light hearted comedy. The plot is funny, even thought there are no specific scenes that make me laugh out loud, it still cheers me up. I think both Melissa Leo and Tessa Thompson are great in the film. I enjoyed this unexpectedly sweet comedy.
S.M.A.R.T. Chase (2017)
It is not very interesting
This film tells the story of a security expert who is ambushed during a job to protect a vase from Shanghai to London.
Even though it is a proper heist film, it lacks intensity and thrill. It somehow does not seem very believable or engaging, but I can't exactly pinpoint what is wrong with it. Perhaps it is because of its constant need to impress viewers with its fancy cars, posh real estates and high tech gadgets.
A predictable romantic comedy
This film tells the story of a couple who decides to open up their relationship on the suggestion of their mutual friend.
"Permission" is a predictable romantic comedy, I could just tell how the film will end after watching the first scene. The process of getting to the end scene is quite pleasant, with a lot of eye candy and nice portrayal of how the new arrangement may or may not be working.
Hearts Beat Loud (2018)
It's slow and lacks a fully developed plot
This film tells the story of a father who relives his youthful days by writing music with his daughter.
The film is really really slow. A huge amount of screen time shows them singing full songs, and there is very little plot. The film looks like a vehicle to deliver the songs to people, but it doesn't really work. It just gets really boring. In the end I watched it at 1.7x the speed, and it was just barely bearable.
Quite a disappointing film
This film tells the story of an American man who goes to Russia for a deal of blue diamonds.
The film starts off moderately good, but five minutes later it becomes horrendous. It becomes a romantic film, but there is no chemistry at all. They two characters do not seem attracted to each other, and their romance is contrived and unconvincing. After fifty minutes of romance, finally we get to see diamond related scenes again. Yet, these diamond scenes are just more excuses to have sex scenes. It just becomes quite ridiculous. The pace is slow, the story is implausible and the film just has no thrill or engagement. It is a plain bore, and does not captivate me at all. Frankly, it is quite a disappointing film.
Destination Wedding (2018)
It is very much not my cup of tea
This film tells the story of a man and a woman who meets in a destination wedding.
I can't quite believe the production of this film. The film is basically made of long static shots. Keanu and Winona talk for minutes, and the camera does not move at all. The film is very dialog heavy; basically the two characters talk all the time in different backgrounds. The supporting characters do not talk at all, not even at the wedding ceremony. In the first half of the film, Keanu and Winona are very wooden. In the wedding dinner scene, Keanu's hands are literally motionless for about five minutes. I really thought his hands were tied up, until he finally raises his arms to leave the sat. Another thing that really bothers me is that no supporting character you see on the screen talks. Even if there is someone else's voice, which happens only 2-3 times, it is a person you cannot see on the screen. The film seems to be describing an alternate universe where everyone else is unable to speak. I would have wished for something else other than them two talking. Even if the film contains a shot of the masseur saying good afternoon, the taxi driver saying where you are going etc, it would have made a lot of difference. I am a romantic comedy fan, but this is very much not my cup of tea.
A fantastic film
This is a fantastic Marvel film! I really like the visuals. The car chase scene is jaw droppingly intense. The way Venom can be good and bad is a really fresh thing to see in a Marvel film. There is comedy and jokes too, and somehow Venom reminds me of Deadpool because of the big white eyes!
A truly incredible journey
This film tells the story of a young Indian man who goes to Paris in search of his father, with no money in his pocket.
The journey is truly incredible. It is beyond my wildest dreams, yet most of it is believable. It is a fantastic, eye opening journey that educates the brain and the heart. I find the film very entertaining, fun, touching and imaginative. I really enjoyed it.
God's Own Country (2017)
A story to be felt
This film tells the story of a young English farmer who develops unexpected feelings towards a migrating worker.
The two men in the film really stand out, as they already have distinct personalities and personality traits right from the beginning. The way they develop their bonding is convincing, and their relationship is transformative and touching. The story is to be seen and felt. The parents are really great as well. Even though the pace is slow, I enjoyed every second of it.
It's so bad that it almost became good
This film tells the story of four elite agents who are about to graduate from their tough training.
Just ten minutes in, I already realised just how bad this film is. It is a low budget B movie, and just how on earth did it get a wide release in theatres? The plot is horrendous, the lines are ridiculous, and the whole film is just laughably bad. There are times that the film was so bad that I burst out laughing, but there was no laughter intended by the filmmakers. The fact that three of the four DEBS have only a few film credits after this probably says something about this film.
