Balmoral Castle, together with Sandringham House, is the private property of the Queen and is not part of the Crown Estate. The Balmoral estate and its original castle (demolished) were bought by Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, Elizabeth II's great-great-mother, in 1852.

Spoilers

The trivia item below may give away important plot points.

The Queen (2006), also written by Peter Morgan, also prominently featured a Scottish stag who crosses the line between estates. In that film, the stag crosses from Balmoral to the neighbouring estate and is killed there in a parallel of Diana dying in a neighbouring country (France). In this episode, Diana herself helps Prince Philip kill the stag, and in the final scene is hounded by paparazzi of the same type who would later surround her after her fatal car crash in 1997.
