Probably the best nature documentary ever
16 November 2019 | by usivciubvSee all my reviews

I guess it's probably a bit of a cliché to say that about Attenborough's various series. And that probably creates a bit of a backlash against the hype and bandwagoning. But when it comes to these extraordinary BBC/Attenborough series, it honestly is true: they really are pushing the boundaries here, not just in terms of the way they present wildlife and our planet, but also the painstaking research conducted over many years, and the complex intricacy of the themes and issues they discuss.

So, I'd been trying to decide if this one tops Planet Earth II. And I think they've actually managed to pull it off. In particular, aside from the usual beautiful imagery and informative analysis, there's far greater attention to the wider environmental catastrophe we're undergoing, which is a healthy (and loooong overdue) development on what they began touching on in Blue Planet II.

Why is that important? I think it helps us put these extraordinary scenes we're seeing into a much more honest and relatable context, much less 'detached from reality'. The sense you get with a lot of nature documentaries that you're watching an experiment conducted on nature in some artificially pristine and isolated 'other world' is finally being broken down.

And it's all that much better for it. Because yes, that nature is actually real and it exists in OUR world, not in some Sunday night fantasy TV documentary. It's incredible and beautiful and breathtaking and better than we could ever imagine, looking out that window at all the dreary concrete and pollution around us. And we're about to lose it all unless we do something NOW...
