Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern's mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West. So this is what happens when your American Dream fails. Living in a society without proper healthcare and social security systems. I was appalled by how the ideas of freedom and free will were being misused in order to cover up how American society has failed. Is it really a choice to be a nomad or is it simply the only option left after you lose your job, can't live off your pension and don't have a place to call home? Adding the obvious unprocessed trauma of losing a husband, losing a home and a community. To me Fern was a restless soul not because she made a choice. But because life happened without any safety nets .
