- At the Boulder school, Frannie is setting up chairs. Later, she watches Norris hand out guns to the Watch, and wonders if they will do things different than before Captain Trips.
After Fran delivers her daughter, Dr. Wen gives the baby to Frannie to hold. Everyone in Boulder gave a toast to the future the baby promised, and then the baby started coughing. The baby's neck started to swell and they wondered if the baby would recover from Captain Trips. Frannie considers killing the baby since no one ever survived the superflu, but she can't bring herself to do it.
One night, the baby recovered from the superflu and Frannie holds her.
Another baby due came earlier, but never had Trips. Frannie wishes that the baby could meet her father, and refuses to let people send scouts to New Vegas because they can't spare the manpower... and because she doesn't want to confirm for sure that Stu is dead. One day Frannie talks the baby out for a walk, and Norris coming by sees her and helps. Norris says that they're setting up for the party that night, and Frannie tells Norris that she doesn't feel like being around people. He says that it's important that people see Frannie and her daughter, and it may be the only connection they still have to Mother Abigail.
That night, Frannie goes to the party with her baby, who she's named Abigail. People have left gifts, and Frannie puts the photo of the four walkers who left for New Vegas among the gifts. Stu, Tom, and Kojak come in, and Frannie stares at her husband in shock. He hobbles over and they hug, and Stu says that Kojak saved his life. The couple kiss, and Stu looks at his daughter. Frannie introduces him to Abby, and then she and Stu kiss again.
In the ruins of New Vegas, Flagg's happy button turns from scowling back to smiling.
In Boulder, the citizens celebrate the Fourth of July, grilling out and dancing. Stu and Frannie line-dance together, and the deejay switches to a slow song. Frannie excuses herself, and Stu notices that she's worries about something. He goes after her as she looks out at the lake, and Frannie finally tells him that she wants to go back to Maine and see the ocean. Stu points out that he doesn't know all of the newcomers, and had to arrest three people for drunk and disorderly and eventually it will become worse.
Stu asks if Frannie will risk Abby, and Frannie points out that everything is a risk. She suggests that they could come back, and Stu says that he'll think about it. Satisfied, they dance.
That night after sex, Stu asks Frannie when she wants to go. Frannie confirms that he really wants to go, and says that she wants to leave a soon as possible and "close the circle". Abby cries and Frannie goes to check on their daughter because it's her turn.
The next day, Stu and Frannie prepare to leave in a camper. Tom tells Stu and Frannie to come back, breaks into tears, and Frannie promises that they will go by. Stu has Joe promise to take care of all of his mothers, and Frannie says goodbye as well. The couple say that they'll be all right and start driving to Maine.
The couple occasionally stop to clear debris from the road that blocks their way, and stick to the back roads. They arrive in Lorton, Nebraska, and Frannie suggests that they stop at an abandoned house for the night. Stu agrees, and they pull over and go inside. Kojak is with them, and he and Stu scout out the house while Frannie takes Abby inside.
There's a cornfield behind the house, and Kojak runs up to it but won't go in. Frannie comes around the back, while Stu stares off into the cornfield. Stu comes out of the house and tells Frannie that there's no one inside, and Frannie suggests that Stu drive back to the supermarket they passed to get some supplies. Kojak pulls a black baby doll out of the cornfield, and Stu calls the dog over. Kojak finally comes, and a woman reaches out from the cornfield and pulls the doll back to her.
That night , the Girl camps out in the cornfield and sings a hymn. Inside the house, Stu and Frannie sleep on the couch.
The next day, Stu drives to the supermarket. Frannie stays rather than wake the sleeping Abby, and Stu puts a gun belt around his wife's waist and tells her to keep an eye out. In town, Stu stops at the supermarket and goes in to get supplies.
At the house, Frannie puts Abby in the crate she's using as a crib and goes to get some water from the outside pump.
Stu drives back to the house, and one of the camper tires blows out. He pulls over to change it.
Frannie steps onto the wooden lid surrounding the pump, and it creaks beneath her step.
Stu calls Frannie on the walkie-talkie to tell her he has a flat tire, but gets no response. The walkie-talkie is inside the house, and Stu figures Frannie didn't keep the walkie-talkie with her. Stu goes back to changing the tire.
Frannie pumps the handle of the pump and gets some water. She grabs a bucket and pumps some more water into it, but only gets a trickle. Frannie reaches into the pump outlet with her hand, and hears Flagg whisper "Hello bitch" in her ear. She screams as a rat in the outlet bites her fingers, and the planks beneath her break and she falls into the wall beneath.
Waking up from the fall, Frannie dreams of running through a jungle. She comes to Flagg, sitting at the base of a tree. Flagg greets her, and Frannie figures that she's dreaming. He suggests that she might be dead, chuckles, and shows her the local tribe and says that they're one of the last human untouched by civilization.
Flagg tells Frannie that she isn't dead but will be soon, and says that she may have a concussion and broke multiple bones in the fall. He uses a well and the water to show Frannie an image of her physical body, and Abby cries in the distance. Flagg then shows Frannie an image of Stu changing the tire, and it almost falling on her. He says that he'll heal Frannie and spare Stu, as long as she lets him that he would like a kiss.
Frannie chuckles, and Flagg says that he might want to see through her eyes from time to time, to "see how things are going". Flagg leans forward to kiss Frannie, and she draws back. He asks her if she wants to die in the well, and she says that it might be all a lie. Flagg concedes that it might be, but Frannie knows that Abby is all alone and wants her mama, but her mama is dying.
Frannie "kisses" Flagg, biting his lip. She says that she wouldn't make Flagg's deal for her husband, or daughter, or the world itself, and walks off into the jungle. Flagg goes after her, growling like a wolf.
Running through the jungle, Frannie trips and finds herself in the cornfield behind the house. She hears music, gets up, and follows it. Mother Abigail is on her porch, playing her guitar, and wonders what Frannie is doing there. Frannie tells Abigail that she thinks she's in a well and dying, and Abigail says that Flagg showed Frannie what would scare her to convince her to do his will. She tells Frannie that she resisted Flagg's temptation, and God will bless her. Abigail puts down her guitar and hugs Frannie, who says that she could die but not Abby.
Stu changes the tire and drives up to the house, and finds Kojak standing in the road.
Abigail tells Frannie that there's more to do and more pain to bear. When Frannie says that God is cruel, Abigail tells him that Job said the same thing and the command is always the same: Be true. Stand.
Stu drives to the house and finds the Girl sitting on the steps. Kojak leads him to the well, and Stu sees Frannie at the bottom, unconscious.
Abigail tells Frannie that she will be the mother of five, who will bring forth 20, who will bring forth 70, and Frannie will live to see some of the 70. The old woman assures Frannie that her children will replenish the earth.
In the well, Frannie stirs up while Stu drives the camper over and lowers the line from it on a winch. The Girl tells Stu to ride down the cable, and she'll play it out. Kojak watches over Abby, while Stu pulls out the line that the Girl lets out, then rappels down the well shaft. Frannie screams in pain from her broken bones as Stu lifts her up, and he holds her and the line and tells the Girl to pull them up. She does so, and at the top the Girl calls Stu by name and tells him to give her some space with Frannie.
Frannie looks up and sees Abigail's cross necklace around the girl's neck. The Girl waves a hand over Frannie's body, and Frannie's bones knit. She then takes Frannie's hand, and tells her to sit up. Frannie manages to do so, and the Girl tells her to stand. Frannie stands and the Girl disappears, and an astonished Frannie tells Stu that nothing hurts. They go to Abby, and finds the doll in their daughter's crib. Stu looks at it and the cornfield, and smiles.
Ogunquit, Maine: One Week Later
Stu and Frannie sit on the ocean beach, holding Abby. Frannie asks how Stu would feel about having four more children, and Stu says that he thinking about two but is easily persuaded. He asks Frannie what happened to her in the well, and she says that she found out that there are two sides to the world: the real world, and a pit of darkness. Frannie says that she saw Abigail and Flagg, and was tempted. Echoing Abigail's words, she tells Stu that the wheel turns, the struggle continues, and the command is always to be true and stand. With that, the couple kiss.
A naked Flagg walks up to a village of untouched natives. He cheerfully asks how they're doing, and the native leader shoots an arrow at him. Flagg catches it and points, causing the leader's brain to explode. The other natives step forward and kneel to Flagg, who levitates into the air and tells them that his name is Russell Faraday, and they should worship him.
