When Crown Princess Martha (Sofia Helin) and her children arrive in the United States , the year is 1940. The Norwegian Ambassador to the United States, Wilhelm Morgenstierne (Trond Teigen) greets her at the hotel in New York, he tells her the press is eager to greet her. When she expresses alarm, he tells her that the arrival of the Norwegian Crown Princess and her family is a big event, and "All the major TV and radio stations want to over it. And the newspapers." In 1940, there were only two television stations in operation in the United States, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Schenectady, New York, and neither of them aired regular programming until 1941. There was no "major TV station" in the US until 1947, when NBC began to broadcast network programming.
Crown Princess Martha is shown arriving New York City from the sea. In fact, she and the children transferred to a US Coast Guard vessel offshore and were brought directly to Washington, D.C.
The Norwegian Ambassador to the United States, Wilhelm Morgenstierne (Trond Teigen) tells Crown Princess Martha that "millions" of Norwegian Americans will be interested in the Norwegian ROyal Family being in the United States. In 1940, less than 1.35% of the US population was of Norwegian descent, which considering the 132 million total US population in 1940, means the total population of Norwegian Americans was only about 1.7 million, so there were not in fact "millions" of Norwegian Americans in the USA at that time.
As the American ship carrying the Norwegian Crown Princess and her children to America approaches a blockade, one of the seamen looking out into the night for mines yells out, "Mine on port side!" By the crew placement and the directional movement of the ship, the mine actually appears at starboard.
When the ship American Legion is en route to America, the crew, observing from a lifeboat, says there is a mine on the port side of the ship. They are on the starboard side of the ship, well back from the bow, and would not have been able to see a mine on the port side. They all then turn to the right to look at the mine but, if the mine was on the port side, they wouldn't have been able to see it pass the ship.
Sailor, whilst checking for mines, shouts that there is a mine on the port side. The mine is actually on the starboard side of the ship.
When the Norwegian Ambassador to the United States, Wilhelm Morgenstierne (Trond Teigen) introduces himself to President Roosevelt (Kyle MacLachlan), he introduces himself as the "Ambassador to Norway." This is factually and functionally incorrect. He is the Ambassador from Norway, as the representative of the Norwegian Government to the United States, and he would know that the Ambassador to Norway is the United States Ambassador to Norway and is the representative of the government of The United States to the government of Norway.
