John Harding resumes his job as literature professor in Plymouth to enable his wife Amy the means to attempt revitalizing the ailing family flowers nursery her grandparents started on the Scilly Islands. In Plymouth John confronts her bitterly estranged, domineering mother, Maggie, who opposes Amy's dream and rendered Amy, who never knew her father, too unsure to risk motherhood, frustrating also John's child wish. The now long-distance marriage is under tension, John is attracted to Maggie's devoted neighbor Judith, while Amy is charmed by North Irish drifter Ian O'Hara, who proves priceless to modernize the flower business.
