Tony Chiu-Wai Leung knew nothing about the Mandarin, and did not try to research the character. When Marvel Studios contacted him, they gave him full authority to invent his own background for this iteration of the character. He didn't mind playing a villainous role (not his first time, he already played one in Lust, Caution (2007) and Confession of Pain (2006) for example), but he sought to give the character more depth and credibility: "I tried to explore the reasons that could have led him to become who he is. He's a man with history, who craves to be loved. He is a sociopath, a narcissist and a bigot, but he is also human and has a family."

In the late 1980s Stan Lee had considered a film/TV series about Shang-Chi, and had in mind Brandon Lee, son of martial arts superstar Bruce Lee, for the role. Shang-Chi was visually based on Bruce Lee, so Brandon seemed a fitting choice, but the plan fell through.

The Mandarin in the comics (and in TV shows) wears ten alien rings on his fingers. In this film, the rings were revised to be Hung Gar iron rings worn on the forearms (five on each arm). These rings are traditionally used in martial arts training to strengthen the arms/fists.

This change was made to incorporate Chinese culture, and because cosmic jewelry had already been done with Thanos the Titan in the form of the Infinity Stones and Infinity Gauntlet.

This film features the Mandarin as Shang-Chi's father and enemy. The Mandarin is traditionally the enemy of Iron Man/Tony Stark, but since Tony Stark had died in Avengers: Endgame (2019), he was brought in for this film.

In the comics, Shang-Chi's father was the Chinese criminal mastermind Fu Manchu, a character originally created by Sax Rohmer, but he acquired enough renown and infamy to appear in the Marvel Comics. In 2010, the character was renamed Zheng Zu.

Shang-Chi's mother Ying Li hails from the land of Ta Lo. In the Marvel Comics, Ta Lo had only appeared in one comic, Thor #301 (1980). The land was based on the Chinese heaven ("Daluo Tian"), and was populated by the Xian ("immortals"), a group of beings mistaken for gods, similar to Marvel's Asgardians and Eternals.

The film does not bring up this mythic angle, and merely has Ta Lo be another world in the Marvel Multiverse.

Just before to get into the living labyrinth forest for arriving Ta Lo, Trevor Slattery reveals to Shang-Chi, Katy, and Xialing that he decided to become an actor when, as a youth, he watched Planet of the Apes (1968) in the cinema and was amazed by how in the movie apes were taught to ride a horse (not understanding that they were human disguised). The hint about Planet of Apes is not to be casual: when Shang-Chi and Katy arrives to Macau looking for his younger sister Xialing there is a cameo of Emil Bronsky/Abomination, voiced by Tim Roth, reprising the same character he played in The Incredible Hulk (2008) 13 years later. Roth starred in Planet of the Apes (1968)'s remake, Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes (2001). The reference even goes deeper as Andy Serkis, who played Ulysse Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Black Panther (2018), was on the reboot trilogy of Planet of the Apes composed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) as he played the leader ape Caesar. James Franco, who played Harry Osborn in the Sam Raimi's trilogy Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007) played Will Rodman in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011). Woody Harrelson, who played Cletus Cassidy/Carnage in Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), played The Colonel J. Wesley McCullough in War for the Planet of the Apes (2017).
