a story worth telling
ferguson-63 February 2019
Greetings again from the darkness. The story of Graham Staines certainly deserves to be told, as his impact is lasting and his kindness and devotion to the cause are quite extraordinary. In fact he paid the ultimate price ... actually even greater than that ... for his efforts, simply because he bucked tradition and offered an alternative to folks who previously had none.

Director Aneesh Daniel and writer Andrew E Matthews present Mr. Staines' story (based on true events), and even shot on location in India despite a limited budget. Sharman Joshi plays ambitious young journalist Manav Banerjee, who in the late 1990's packs up his pregnant wife Shanti (Aditi Chengappa) and heads to the remote Indian town of Orissa in hopes of securing a writing job for the local newspaper. Once there, he finds no guarantees - only an editor who assigns him the nearly impossible task of procuring evidence that a local missionary is illegally converting Hindus to Christianity.

The missionary is Australian Graham Staines who, along with his wife (Shari Rigby) and 3 kids, run a camp for locals afflicted with leprosy. Staines is played by Stephen Baldwin, the youngest of the Baldwin brothers, and best known for his turn in THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995). Baldwin and his whispered Aussie accent plays Staines as a near-Saint; one who could only be doubted by the most ferocious traditionalists (of which there are many).

Mr. Joshi plays Banerjee as a bit of creepy-stalking guy who spends a little too much time staring at others. He's conflicted with fulfilling his assignment and discovering the truth about Staines. Banerjee's own moment of self-preservation likely inspired the horrific event by a mob of Hindu fundamentalists that, combined with some insider information, set Banerjee straight with how to proceed and what to report. In the process, he exposes the corruption and self-interest of rural India driven by the many minds closed by religious traditions.

Director Daniel opens the film with actual footage and archival clips of unrest and turmoil from those times. As you would expect, these clips are more disturbing and provide more intense reaction than anything the movie could produce (except for maybe the horrific event noted above). The overblown and overly-dramatic music doesn't help the presentation, yet somehow the message of kindness and forgiven is not lost.

When I was young School boy, I first come across about this news about him,the terrible death and work. After many years, the movies clearly states why he had to go through this terrible death. And how much he is done for the people of India. Amazing movie !

Good movie, great story

Well made movie about the Graham Staines story. It is a sad but touching story.

Interesting angle on foreign missions abroad and not over-preachy. Stephen Baldwin was good even though his Australian accent is not that great.

A MUST SEE!! Your Life Will Never Be The Same!!
mjohna24 March 2019
**An Amazing Movie of the Life of a True Servant to Humanity - Graham Staines**. Not only did Graham Love "The Least of This World" (the less fortunate, the rejected and the forgotten), he also spent his life serving all of God's Children in India, without prejudice. I love the approach of this movie's plot ... from the journalistic perspective. There is a growing level of suspense! And add that, the majestic Geographical Beauty and Scenery of India makes this a well-rounded film to see! Watch this movie soon!!** !!!!!! IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE !!!!!!! *** John11:25-26 ***

Love and forgiveness
drlkisku23 March 2019
Missionary like Graham Stains loved the people who were alienated from society and he took care of them without expecting anything. He was a hope for them unfortunately he was misunderstood .In this era where we talk about revenge in all wrong doing Mrs.Glaydis's forgives the convicted which is beyond understanding for many . chose to forgive them as Christ forgave his accusers. This real story touched my heart and motivated me to serve Him and His people in India or anywhere in the world.Sharman Joshi done a wonderful Job in movie and appreciate his work.

DanPH776 February 2019
The acting was just so bad...the main actor in the film is OK...and Baldwin...well hes OK compared to the rest...but overall the acting just diminishes the potential of the film. Like I said great story...just bad acting.

Let Love Reign!!!
dijo-007242 February 2019
It's hard for anyone to comprehend what motivates a person from Australia to work in an underdeveloped region of India that too among those affected with leprosy.

This movie gives us a beautiful glimpse of how love reigns through service, courage, and forgiveness.

Great work by all the crew. Sharman Joshi did his role to the perfection!

Loved the final suspense too and that made me thought "If you try to fight against truth you are hurting yourself."

An inspiring and heart touching movie. Let Love Reign!!

His is such a beautiful story. As a Muslim this movie reminded me how people can think bad things about you because of religion but it's not about who we warship but what we do with the teachings from each of our respective books

A tale of true love (for others)
g_varg5 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This haunting yet beautiful film portrays the life, work, and death of Australian Christian missionary Graham Staines and his 2 young sons. While it doesn't have the slickness of some big budget Hollywood productions, this film more than capably tells the story of Mr. Staines' work among the poor & lepers in a tribal area of Orissa, India. If you know anything about Mr. Staines' life and work, this film can help amplify that by its visual depiction of his story. If you don't, then this film can provide a snapshot of a period of his efforts and, ultimately, of his martyrdom. It's a tale of selfless service to others, sacrifice, and forgiveness (by Mrs. Staines, after her family are killed). It's also a reminder of the persecution that Christian missionaries face in so many places yet how they persist in their work for their God.

Stephen Baldwin did a fine job as the title character and Shari Rigby gracefully portrayed his wife Gladys. Sharman Joshi succeeds in making you first pull for him, then despise him while also pitying him to some extent. The movie is family friendly but the Staines boys' and their father's murder may be too sensitive of a topic for smaller kids (under 13).

A Powerful True Story
philbdavis1 February 2019
The Least of These is an inspiring true story that highlights the impact one person can have and the ability for love to overcome hatred. The music and cinematography are absolutely stunning. More importantly, this film is eye-opening in showing power of the Gospel lived out in the lives of Graham and Gladys Staines. I highly recommend seeing this movie.

Superb movie, must watch. Recommended for all.

Teaches people not to be biased, not to misinterpret and not to judge. Great acts of love, kindness and forgiveness which is lacking in the present world. There is so much to learn and live better lives.

Gripping
vinodcoh25 March 2019
While the movie is world class, the message it carries is straight out of this world!

This is a content heavy movie. If you are prepared to be shaken to your core with the power of the message, if you are willing to come face to face with truth, you must watch this film. Otherwise there are some a dozen other movies for the faint hearted. - (Vinod Paul, ex advertising & mass communication professional currently involved in community service)
