there's more to that wish
ferguson-616 September 2021
Greetings again from the darkness. Fulfilling the dying wish of a long-ago childhood friend is the basis of this story from screenwriter Ryan McDonough and director Sean Gannet. It's the feature film version of their own 2017 short film with the same title.

Jeremy Sisto (WAITRESS, 2007) stars as Joey Donovan, a crude man just waiting to die in his hospital bed. Out of the blue, he calls his childhood buddy Ronnie Russo (Neil Brown Jr, "SEAL Team"). The two haven't spoken for 25 years, and Ronnie is now an attorney in New York City. He's the one who "got out", while Joey remained in the Roslindale area of Boston, a working class neighborhood. It's an awkward reunion for the two men whose last connection was their Little League team. Joey asks for Ronnie's help in fulfilling his final wish.

We soon learn that Joey is not the most straightforward and truthful of individuals. In fact, he's downright deceitful at times, and director Gannet includes flashbacks to give us some background on why these two turned out the way they did, and what event from so many years ago ties them together. Joey's request forces Ronnie to re-connect with his childhood crush Pattie (Nicky Whelan, HALL PASS, 2011). And of course there's more complexity to the situation than Joey discloses.

The film has been well received at film festivals, but I can't help but think that more attention to the background of the three main characters could have added a bit more heft. Supporting actors include Kevin Chapman as Joey's father, Greyson Cage and Ryan Canale as young Ronnie and Joey, and James DeFilippi as Patti's son, JJ. The film touches on a few interesting topics - childhood friends, split second decisions, regrets and final wishes, as well as the reasons behind lies.

In select theaters and on VOD beginning September 17, 2021.

OK

It was alright; although a bit predictable script. A done before tale of childhood friends where a life changing incident leaves them w/a secret to be used for a future, sorta guilt level, blackmail. Ending also predictable. Currently popular in media of showing racial minority in a super positive role. Obnoxious kid to adult a bit stereotyped, but role a setup for the ending. Baseball skills by all not very good.

isn''t anyone curious as to how it got so many 10s?
imizrahi200220 September 2021
That's it... and it totals out to how undependable this site really is... it HELPS...but if i didn''t know how to read between the review lines... and SOMEhow bumped into movies that were trashed here, i would've missed too many movies that i deeply enjoyed... same with professional reviews...they don't know you. Each of us are different and what might resonate with me, will not with someone(s) else.. but ALL of these 10s going unchallenged? Invalidates IMDB's credibility...

It does not deserve even the one star
Moviedog2617 September 2021
Bad acting, bad story, not good even for tv.

I don't recommend wasting any time on this one.

Warning: Spoilers
Joey's last dying wish was to see his only son. Ronnie had every opportunity to make that happen but he chose not to. I hated this movie. All of these great reviews are laughable.

extremely awful

I suggest everyone not to waste their time He did not even deserve a grade of 1.

How are such scripts written?

How is all this budget wasted?

How can a director be willing to direct such a film?

Captivating movie
annlouise-2712019 September 2021
I found this movie very realistic. We all have issues from our past at different levels that we may not be able to fix but we do the best we can. I was very invested the entire time and wanted to see how things would turn out. Great movie!!

Moving and well-executed
bpkurtz18 September 2021
I've been away from Roslindale and Jamaica Plain for a few years myself - although not as many as the main character, Ronnie Russo. But I enjoyed the chance to visit, in a way, through this movie.

The performances by all of the cast felt powerful, and the film moved me. The theme that resonated with me is how the echoes of our past relationships and choices are things we can't escape, and if we stop trying to do so, we can learn about ourselves, our values, and how to have authentic close personal relationships.

I highly recommend this film!

Story with heart and great actors!
Mommai18 September 2021
This story of a childhood friendship wrought with bad choices, and the toll those choices play into adulthood, stars Jeremy Sisto and Neil Brown Jr., both great actors who I was shocked to see in this little indie flick. Jeremy Sisto does an amazing job playing Joey, the a-hole looking for redemption, and somehow makes you feel for him despite his past and current behavior. I do wish they went a little deeper into Ronnie's backstory, but all in all, it was a great movie addressing some deep issues with real heart. In reality, I'd rate this a solid 7/10, but gave it a 10 to counteract those trolls giving it an undeserved 1 star rating.

Beautiful story, beautifully told.
jon-5177618 September 2021
Went to the premier last night in Somerville Massachusetts and was very impressed. 'Last Night' is the tale of two friends from working-class backgrounds who are separated in their youth and whose lives take very different paths. They are reunited many years later when one of them is dying. The acting was as near to A-list as you can get for a indie film, and the writing was subtle and powerful. Highly recommended.

Film With Heart

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film. From the beginning to the end I was engaged and wanted to know how everything would work out. Sometimes watching a film with heart is just what a viewer needs.

Gripping story and a superb cast. Really enjoyed this film. Anyone giving this a 1 is a professional troll and should be ignored... One of the best Indy films I've seen in years...

A compelling drama
bflaccus19 September 2021
Rozzie is a tight drama that keeps its secrets hidden, slowly unveiling the truth until the pieces come together and all is revealed in a compelling third act. Great performances from a talented cast, a ton of heart and some genuinely funny moments make this a great watch and a refreshing break from the latest Hollywood drivel. Enjoy!

sansu-9841923 September 2021
This movie stayed with me for days.

The acting was convincing and believable (including the kids.) Kudos to the writer and director. This was their first feature and they kept it very real and honest.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they will do next.

Neil Brown nails it with his talents with the wide range of emotions he has to play in this film. The young men who play the younger guys also did a great job!

Rozzie is Riveting!!
wiscogal29 April 2021
After seeing this premiere at Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival, which was 100% online this year, I was immensely impressed by seeing the filmmakers in virtual chats & lounges, Red Carpets and Q & As. The filmmakers are genuine & incredibly talented. They made a dramatic film that is full of a talented cast (including kids who are rising stars), and a plot that keeps you entertained the entire duration of the film. So much attention was made to detail, from the sound, sets and everything the viewer doesn't see to make this film shine brilliantly. There wasn't a moment I once wanted to check my phone as I are pulled in the instant the film started! Watch Rozzie and watch it recieve a plethora of Laurels as it rises up as a strong independent feature. Don't miss it!

Nice Little Drama
gab-6759918 September 2021
I almost passed this movie up due to the low ratings and the reviews that said there were unknown actors in this movie. I am glad I didn't this was a slow little drama that was simple but enjoyable. Just because nothing was blowing up or being killed doesn't make it awful. Please give it a shot and be your own judge. I would say this was more of a 7 out of 10 for me but I wanted to make up for the ridiculous one ratings. Let's be honest one starts are just for horribly unwatchable movies and this was not that! Also it has Sisto from Law and Order, Whelan from my favorite movie Tragedy Girls and I think Mr. Brown was in Straight outa Compton. So yes! There are a few good actors in this one. I hope more ppl can see how hard it is to make a movie these days and respect when a movie is at least half good. This movie also shows how alcohol and mental illnesses is never a good mix.

Yeah. I'm Biased. Wanna fight?
bmrosen-3641622 September 2021
I admit it, I know the folks who made this movie. I'm biased. But I'm going to go to bat for it.

But I also am true to my word. So even if I'm biased, I'm not gonna lie.

This is a fine indie film, well told, and very well acted. Jeremy Sisto in particular gives a strong performance as a deeply flawed human being consumed with regret, a pit of self-loathing coated by a veneer of good-humored hostility.

It's a strong first film for this creative team that handles the topics deftly and sensitively. It is absolutely worth seeing and, I hope, championing. Give it a shot...
