Sci-fi and fantasy shows tend to flourish on television, because the serial structure gives them plenty of space to include expansive world-building. However, the genre often costs a lot of money to put on screen, and studios tend to be hesitant to continue producing a series unless it's a sure success.
Because of that, there are a ton of amazing TV shows that never had the chance to really get off the ground. For every Supernatural and Doctor Who, there are dozens of series that only got a season or two. Even some that got several seasons were hit by unexpected cancellations that made for rushed endings or unfulfilling cliffhangers.
The classic example will always be Firefly, which is held up as the cult classic that could have changed television if it had just been given the chance. But there are many other examples that fans got hooked on, just...

Max's newest original medical drama is officially a runaway streaming hit, after previously scoring with Rotten Tomatoes users to the tune of a 91% audience score. Launched in 2020, Max offers an array of movies and shows plucked from Wbd’s extensive library of content, including iconic HBO series. The streamer’s slate of original dramatic shows may be small, but it includes numerous interesting projects by major filmmakers.
No less a figure than Ridley Scott contributed to Max’s very first original drama series, the strange sci-fi excursion Raised By Wolves. The streamer has since explored a variety of other genres with help from some big names in movies and TV. They did true crime with 2022’s buzzy The Staircase, starring awards-season darlings Colin Firth and Toni Collette. Also in the true crime space, 2023’s Love & Death was penned by TV veteran David E. Robert De Niro pulls double duty for his latest crime drama in the trailer for The Alto Knights, a new film from director Barry Levinson focusing on the story of the real-life gangsters Vito Genovese (De Niro) and Frank Costello (De Niro).
Goodfellas screenwriter and Oscar nominee Nicholas Pileggi wrote the script for The Alto Knights, which stars Robert De Niro as Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, two Italian Americans who head two New York-based crime families in the mid-20th century. Reports about their reign show that in 1957, Genovese tried to assassinate Costello, resulting in Costello exiting the mob to recover from his injuries and distance himself from “the life.”
In the Alto Knights trailer, Vito Genovese does not approve of how Frank Costello runs his family. Genovese says Costello is fooling himself if he thinks he can present himself as an upstanding citizen while running a shadowy organization behind closed doors.

The new prequel series, Dune: Prophecy, has introduced a replacement for Jason Momoa's Duncan Idaho character, but there's a notable twist to him. Idaho was introduced in Frank Herbert's original Dune novel as the loyal Swordmaster to House Atreides. The climax of the 2021 film adaptation saw Jason Momoa's iteration give his life for Paul Atreides and Lady Jessica, solidifying him as one of the franchise's heroes. But his absence left a notable void in 2024's Dune: Part Two, as, even though it's the best Dune movie, it's largely lacking in humor.
Sure, Stilgar adds some comedy to Dune: Part Two, and it's not that Dune needs to be a comedy. However, having a bit of levity to balance out the intense lore and thematic exploration can make the world feel more lived in. Jason Momoa and Timothe Chalamet had excellent chemistry in the first movie, and there's nothing...

[This story contains spoilers from the Dune: Prophecy series premiere, as well as House of the Dragon seasons one and two.]
The end of an old war brings about a regime change in a faraway fantasy land. From that moment forward, one organization holds all the cards over the rest of civilization, while others scheme and plot their way toward ultimate power — or die trying.
Sound familiar? That could be because it’s a very vague description of two HBO shows that aired episodes this year: House of the Dragon, which completed its second season over the summer, and the newest arrival, Dune: Prophecy, based on the novel universe created by Frank Herbert and most recently adapted for film by Denis Villeneuve.
Coming hot on the heels of the widely beloved (and fellow Max import) Penguin, the new Dune series aims to capture HBO loyalists’ attention with another epic novel adaptation, not entirely unlike the other epic novel adaptation.

20th Century Studios is kicking off this chilly Wednesday afternoon with some heat from Rami Malek‘s latest film, The Amateur. The studio debuted a new action-packed trailer and poster for The Amateur, an espionage thriller in which Malek’s character uses his unique set of skills to find the people who killed his wife. He has no experience in the field, but that won’t stop him from launching a manhunt that defies expectations.
James Hawes directs The Amateur from a screenplay by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli based on the novel by Robert Littell. The film opens in theaters on April 11, 2025.
Here’s the official synopsis for The Amateur courtesy of 20th Century Studios:
“Charlie Heller (Malek) is a brilliant, but deeply introverted decoder for the CIA working out of a basement office at headquarters in Langley whose life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack.

The Amateur star Rami Malek and director James Hawes explain how the upcoming espionage thriller pulls from Slow Horses, which the latter directed episodes for. Based on a 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Littell, The Amateur follows a CIA cryptographer who, after losing his wife in a London terrorist attack, blackmails his agency into training him and letting him pursue the people responsible. The film will mark the latest espionage-themed project for Hawes, who directed all six season 1 episodes of Slow Horses, Apple TV+'s acclaimed spy show.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, both Malek and Hawes explain how The Amateur draws from the spy movies that have come before, while also putting a very modern spin on its subject matter. Though the Jason Bourne films and classics like Three Days of the Condor (1975) are inspirations, Hawes affirms that it's also a "a very 2025 movie." Check...

Ridley Scott has had over two decades to consider what he wanted to add to his upcoming Gladiator sequel, and he spent at least four of those years thinking about baboons. Scott loves a lot of things—massive practical sets, Paul Mescal, extremely long epics, and more—but he really seems to love baboons.

This upcoming Sunday, HBO will air the first episode of Dune: Prophecy, a new TV series set in Frank Herbert's Dune universe. But don't expect to see Paul Atreides anywhere; this show is set 10,000 years before the events of the first Dune book, adapted recently by director Denis Villeneuve for the big screen. Dune: Prophecy takes place in the shadow of the Machine Wars, where humanity fought against violent thinking machines and just barely won. Now, various schools are cropping up to teach human beings to do things that computers used to do. One of those schools is the Bene Gesserit sisterhood, where women are trained to be human lie detectors. Sisters are then placed in the halls of power alongside the leaders of the great houses. Are they serving truth, or are they subtly massaging events in the Sisterhoods' favor?

Just four years ago, when Max was still called HBO Max and Max Originals were still a thing, the nascent streaming platform released its first sprawling, strange, science-fiction epic “Raised by Wolves.” The first two episodes were directed by film legend Ridley Scott. The story balanced timeless questions about the nature of humanity and the trappings of faith with creepy space monsters and bloody battle scenes. The budget was sizable enough to shoot in South Africa and accommodate 3,700 VFX shots. By all measures, “Raised by Wolves” was set up to be a hit.
Instead, it was canceled after two seasons and wiped off the platform it was meant to help put on the map. Thus is the age in which we live, where art that doesn’t hit its quotas is made to seem like it never happened, but that only makes the arrival of “Dune: Prophecy” that much more peculiar.

Behind every supposedly “great man,” there is not just a woman standing behind him, but an entire sisterhood of supernaturally gifted members pulling the strings. At least, this is the case in “Dune: Prophecy,” the HBO prequel series that takes place a whopping 10,148 years before the birth of the false prophet Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet in the films “Dune” and “Dune: Part 2.” Not to be outdone by what has come before, this promising new take finds plenty of its own deceivers with the power to forever alter the very course of the universe, drawing us into their machinations while the grim reality looms that they may be the agents of their own destruction.

Abubakar Salim is a man of many, many talents. One day, you might find him shining on-screen as Alynn Hull in HBO’s House of the Dragon; another day, you might find him possibly working on his next gaming project. As the founder of Surgent Studios, balancing his career in prestige media with his love for video games comes about as naturally as breathing to him.

Hawes is a prolific TV director, having helmed episodes of Black Mirror, Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who, The Alienist, Snowpiercer, Raised by Wolves, and Slow Horses. He also recently made his feature directorial debut with One Life, a biopic starring Anthony Hopkins as Nicholas Winton, who helped save hundreds of children during World War II.
The live-action Green Lantern series is said to have a True Detective vibe as it “follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” Kyle Chandler was recently set to star as Hal Jordan. Exclusive: It was the place where American viewers were always glad they came — and now the Cheers bar is hoping to open its doors to Brits.
Deadline can reveal that Big Talk Studios, the producer behind Stephen Merchant’s BBC/Amazon series The Outlaws, is pitching a UK version of NBC’s iconic comedy. Thirty years after Cheers’ last orders, Big Talk has enlisted Simon Nye, the British writer known for Men Behaving Badly and The Durrells, to adapt the series for a UK audience. Nye will be showrunner if Cheers is greenlit.
Cheers ran for 11 seasons and 275 episodes on NBC, depicting life in a titular Boston bar run by Sam Malone (Ted Danson). Regulars included Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) and Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley), and the show is consistently ranked among the best comedies ever made.

Pretty Little Liars season 3 is not happening, as Max canceled the reboot three months after a cliffhanger ending. TVLine has confirmed that the rebooted Pretty Little Liars has been canceled by Max after two seasons. There has never been a television series quite like "Raised by Wolves," which only ran for two seasons on HBO Max before being cancelled. The science fiction show followed the last survivors of humanity as they tried to find a new home following the destruction of Earth in a great war between a religious sect obsessed with the sun god Sol and a cult of atheists. Androids named Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim) have been given a group of human children to raise and care for on the planet Kepler-22b, which hopefully will help them lead humanity to a new future. Unfortunately, Kepler-22b is a sinister and strange place, and the followers of Sol end up crash-landing and causing some serious problems of their own.

Shguns cast brings James Clavells bestselling novel of the same name to life. While Shgun was originally intended to be a 10-part limited series based on the celebrated novel of the same name by James Clavell, the overwhelming success and popularity of the series inspired FX, Hulu, and creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to expand the story in further seasons. Shgun earned a near-perfect 99% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and is poised to have a big night at the Emmys, which will take place on September 15, 2024. Shgun was previously adapted into a limited series back in 1980 and earned 3 Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series.

Once known as Dune: The Sisterhood, the TV series Dune: Prophecy, which serves as a prequel to the Dune feature films directed by Denis Villeneuve, started filming in November of 2022, then underwent quite a shake-up in 2023 when the director of the first two episodes, Johan Renck (who executive produced and directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series Chernobyl) decided to leave the project over creative issues, then Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) – who had been cast as one of the show’s lead characters – followed him out the door. Everything has been worked out since then, with Dune: Prophecy on track for a November premiere on both HBO and the Max streaming service… and now we’ve learned that the promotions will begin at New York Comic Con, where attendees will get to experience both a panel and a fan experience.

More than a decade has gone by since the Twilight Saga ran its course on the big screen, with five movies telling the story of the four books in author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. So, of course, it’s time for a franchise revival! While there are some side stories and reimaginings that could still be brought to the screen in live action, that’s not the way things are going right now. Earlier this year, we heard that Lionsgate was developing a Twilight animated series, and now that series is set up at the Netflix streaming service! Netflix also revealed that this animated series is an adaptation of the Midnight Sun novel.
When we first heard that Lionsgate would be taking Twilight to TV, it was said that Meyer was expected to be involved with the series, with Wyck Godfrey and Erik Feig serving as executive producers. Feig...

“Midnight Sun,” the new animated “Twilight” series based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel of the same name, has landed at Netflix.
The streamer has granted a straight-to-series order for the animated show, which has officially begun development, Netflix announced Wednesday. The project, which hails from Lionsgate Television, is described as a “retelling of ‘Twilight’ from the perspective of Edward Cullen.”
The news comes months after Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns confirmed the company would be shopping around the series during a Morgan Stanley media conference in March, saying, “I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”
The series was first reported to be in development at Lionsgate TV in April 2023, with Meyer’s involvement expected.
Meyer will executive produce alongside Meghan Hibbett for Fickle Fish Films, while additional EPs include Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment and Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey for Picturestart.

‘Twilight’ Animated Series Gets Netflix Order; Sinead Daly Adapting Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Midnight Sun’

Netflix has given a straight-to-series order to a Twilight animated series based on Stephenie Meyer’s 2020 novel Midnight Sun. The project, which has entered development at the global streamer, comes from Lionsgate Television, whose movie studio sibling released The Twilight Saga.
Sinead Daly (Tell Me Lies) is writing and executive producing the adaptation of the Twilight companion novel, a retelling of Twilight from the perspective of Edward Cullen. Robert Pattinson’s performance as Edward in the 2008 film Twilight was informed by Midnight Sun as Meyer shared her then-unfinished manuscript with the actor.

Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen exec produce for Temple Hill Entertainment, Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey for Picturestart. Emily Wissink is overseeing for Picturestart. Temple Hill was a producer...

In today's era of streaming, it feels like no show is truly safe. Just this week we got the news that Disney+ had canceled its Star Wars show The Acolyte barely a month after it finished airing; before that, Prime Video took the axe to its popular fantasy romance series My Lady Jane.
But for me, looking back on the many casualties of the streaming wars, few losses sting more than Raised By Wolves. Created by Aaron Guzikowski and produced by Ridley Scott, Raised By Wolves was a daring, weird science fiction series about a pair of androids named Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim) who undertook a dangerous mission to restart humanity on the distant planet of Kepler-22b after the Earth was all but destroyed. It quickly carved out a passionate fanbase, tapping into the sort of shocking sci-fi horror vibes that Scott was known for from movies like Alien and Prometheus.

The second season of House of the Dragon is over and we likely won't see season 3 until sometime in 2026. But we will get to revisit Westeros before that. Next year, HBO will debut a new Game of Thrones prequel series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is an altogether smaller story than we saw in either Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon. There's no massive war afoot; there's just a very tall knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his diminuitive squire Egg, who wander the Seven Kingdoms having adventures. The first season will be based on Martin's story "The Hedge Knight," which begins with Dunk entering himself into a tournament in Ashford Meadow in the Reach. There he'll meet a variety of characters, including a member of...

[This story contains spoilers from House of the Dragon season two, episode seven, “The Red Sowing.”]
The latest episode of House of the Dragon was a huge win for Team Black, if only in the short term, as Queen Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) plan to recruit new dragon riders came to fruition. While several men and women were killed horribly in dragon fire, a few others emerged from the trials with new dragons to call their own. What’s a few dozen casualties when three new fire-powered soldiers are officially on the board?
But not every character with Valyrian blood managed to snag a dragon, or even attempt to snag one. Conspicuously absent from the dragon-snatching party: Alyn of Hull, the Seasnake’s bastard son who is emerging as a leader in Team Black’s seafaring side of the war against the Greens. While his brother Addam (Clinton Liberty) was the first of the new riders (called Dragonseeds) to emerge,...

Brendan Quinn, whose role in Netflix’s “One Day” landed him a best supporting nod at the National Film Awards UK, has joined the ensemble cast of “Scene House,” a dark comedy penned and directed by Annabella Fazio.
Quinn stars alongside Netflix alum Safiyya Ingar (“The Witcher”), Nell Williams (“Blinded by the Light”), Denzel Baidoo (“Last Swim”), Selina Jones (“Raised by Wolves”), Aaron Teoh (“Wicked”) and Ivy Freeman-Attwood (“Two Neighbors”).
Looking at societal obsession with celebrity culture, the short film is set in a dystopian future where actors inhabit an enclosed area called The Scene House – an unsettling hybrid of a theme park and museum. Here, observers pay to enter and, for an additional cost, interact with the actors. One of these Actors, played by Jones, begins to question their existence in The Scene House as the boundaries blur between performance and reality.

While the dramatic movements of projects at Warner Bros. seemed to have calmed down and despite some big decisions being made on gambles like Kevin Costner’s Horizon series, the studio is still working on some re-arrangement of their properties. It was reported earlier that upcoming series that were meant to be exclusive to the Max streaming app are now becoming HBO originals. Previously, all shows that were based on Warner Bros. IP fell under the Max umbrella, which felt like the most obvious way to separate the label from HBO. “We felt like we had to delineate between an HBO show and a Max show,” HBO and Max content CEO Casey Bloys said. “The idea of using Warner Bros. IP as a delineation for Max felt right. At least that gives you a clear lane. But as we started producing those shows, we were using the same methods, the same kind of thinking,...

"Are you hunting this thing?!" Brainstorm Media has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror movie called Consumed, the latest from the genre filmmaker Mitchell Altieri. It's set for a direct-to-vod release in August later this summer if anyone's curious. Netflix’s One Piece is expanding its cast as it heads into a second season.
The live-action adaptation of the expansive manga and anime series has added Werner Coetser, Brendan Murray and Clive Russell to its ensemble of actors. They’ll each play allies of Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his Straw Hat Pirates.
Coetser and Murray (Warrior, Raised by Wolves) will play Dorry and Brogy, who in the source material are the two captains of the Giant Warrior Pirates. Game of Thrones alum Russell is set to play Crocus, a wise doctor and lighthouse keeper.
The three actors join fellow newcomers Daniel Lasker, Camrus Johnson, Jazzara Jaslyn and David Dastmalchian, who are set to play members of the Baroque Works criminal organization. Series regulars Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero and Taz Skylar are set to return.

Netflix’s runaway hit series One Piece sets sail for the anticipated season 2. The manga adaptation became such a success that Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis, who is a vet of the film industry, has been lobbying for a role in the next season as the character Doctor Kureha. Curtis, who recently started production on Freaky Friday 2, had taken to her social media with photoshopped images of her in the role, which even got the attention of the show’s official accounts.
While fans wait for that announcement, Variety has reported on the casting of several villains in the upcoming season. Daniel Lasker, known from Raised by Wolves, has been cast to play Mr. 9, Batwoman’s Camrus Johnson will be added to season 2 as Mr. 5, Jazzara Jaslyn, who can be seen in Warrior, will be playing Miss Valentine and Late Night With the Devil star David Dastmalchian will be portraying the role of Mr.
