A pale, insubstantial imitation of its former self
19 March 2019 | by moegabeSee all my reviews

I was an enormous fan of the original Street Legal - every Friday night, without exception. I even re-watched its reruns. (I had helped set up my ex-husband's storefront law firm in the '70s and the show was very realistic and nostalgic for me). You can imagine my excitement when I learned SL was returning. There was something so warm and friendly, inviting and enticing and tantalizing about the original. Leon and Carrie were the adults in the room, principled, hard-working, very respectful of and to others. Chuck was the greedy capitalist and Olivia was the naughty, even greedier, back-stabbing, b*tchy femme fatale, as well as a lot of comic relief. Together they made up the spectrum of political stripes. And there were Alana (a judge married to Leon); Dillon (the prosecutor who married Carrie before her untimely departure for personal reasons); decent junior lawyer Rob; Sarah Polley's mom Diane, a young David James Elliott, Al Waxman, Gordon Pinsent, and more. A wealth of Canadiana. Though she has plenty of stage experience under her belt, Dale, as the one-dimensional, self-centred, just older, humouless and still b*tchy, Olivia, cannot carry this new show and most of the new co-stars just don't resonate or stand out. I tuned in thinking I would also see Leon and Dillon, as advertised, but at episode 3, still no sign of them. I had raved so much to my sister about the original Street Legal, which she never saw, that she tuned in to the new show on my recommendation. She can't understand what anyone sees in the perpetually nasty, no longer amusing) Olivia, who takes up to much of the show's oxygen and was advertised as its star ("She's just so - so unlikable," was her summation) and the story lines, acting, etc., bored her. The problems are: (1) the original show had it all - the familiar locales and flavour of the city of Toronto (the new show isn't even filmed in TO - is that why the camera zooms so fast everything's a blur?); realism - cozy small firm/family feel; fervent passion for the well defined cases they often worked together; realistic dialogue (no lawyer I ever knew - and I freelanced with many dozens through the years - ever said "I'm really good in court" as in the new show); delicious romance; and in particular, humour (the new show is just a relentless stream of negativity); the passion, excluding the son of the addict, is, at best, strained. (2) the new version, in trying so hard to be modern and metropolitan (constant blurry, zooming about camera shots, unnecessary loud music over dialogue; everything so speedef up and jerky scene transitions that hurt the brain. (3) Messy writing, scenes and story lines. I so wanted to like it, but this is my last wasted Mon. night hour. The new "slicker" version has lost its Canadian identity and that was a great part of its charm. Have you ever noticed that most "new and improved" products are never as good as the original? What a missed opportunity.
