The film, as all art should, makes a courageous hypothesis. And even if one does not agree to it, one is with the intention of the film, sharing its concerns, and therefore empathising with the characters.
Those who have criticised it saying that a return violence cannot be a solution etc, forget that the film does not offer the actions in its narrative, as a Solution, it asks a question- what if there was a backlash? What if women could/wanted to/decided to inflict the violence that is their usual reality, upon a man?
In presence of such a possibility/fear which is spelt out, shown in the film, then risk it and yet want to continue inflicting it upon women?
The criteria that are decided by the protagonists as the areas of 'expertise' that their 'victim' should acquire, and excel at, are arrived it by the women questioning his idea of the role of women, therefore representing the society's idea of the role of the women. This is intelligent writing. The characterisations, their background-subtle glimpses into their backgrounds, their similarities, their differences(difference to the extent of one character being always , slightly sympathetic towards the villain), their interrelationships ( for example Vibha's affection for Chitra- for me, the warmest, most loving space in the script- Is Vibha seeing Surmayee in Chitra? or is it a romantic fondness? One never knows. The film, like all good scripts, does not spoon-feed us with 'explanations' either.)
A film accused of loudness and crass content is actually subtle and sensitive.
The blatant, crass depiction of the action is the director's choice and his taking us along to imagine the worst, the crude.
worst and most crude violence just like rape is the worst and crudest of behaviors.
The performances do full justice to the writing, even bringing a lot more of their own into it. There are various moments, too numerous to list here which exhibit the talent of these actors. The villain/'victim' allows himself to be broken and shattered, and the four protagonists bear a strange dignity even as they perform crude tasks.
The ending, which I shall not write here, is the proof of the fact that the director does not suggest this as a solution.
I had the pleasure of knowing the director at FTII.
Am exasperated, but also proud, that Aditya Kripalani, still makes his own rules.
