The police investigating Cal's disappearance/abduction make multiple elementary mistakes.
First, they allow Ben to speak to his wife before they have questioned him. Since he was not in the home at the time the child's disappearance was reported and since he is separated from his wife and does not have primary custody of his son, he is automatically the prime suspect in Cal's disappearance, and police should immediately question him without any other family members present.
Second, the police allow Ben and Grace to be alone together in a room in the house from which the child may have been abducted. If the parents were somehow involved in their child's disappearance, this would give them time to concoct a story, give each other alibis, and/or disturb or remove incriminating forensic evidence. Police never allow witnesses and especially suspects to speak to each other before each has been questioned separately.
Finally, and perhaps most egregiously, the police allow Ben, Grace, and Michaela to walk around Cal's room. There is plenty of forensic evidence that could be disturbed, even inadvertently, by people walking around a room. Realistically, the police should have cleared everyone from the house upon arrival to allow the CSI techs total access to as clean a crime scene as possible. See more
