Jimmi Simpson Joins Russell Crowe Thriller ‘Unhinged’ (Exclusive)
Jimmi Simpson will play a key role in “Unhinged,” Variety has learned.

He joins an impressive cast that includes Oscar-winner Russell Crowe and Caren Pistorius. Solstice Studios is producing the psychological thriller, which is currently filming in New Orleans.

“Unhinged” centers on a woman named Rachel (Pistorius), who leans on her horn at the wrong time, with the wrong driver (Crowe). According to the logline, “‘Road rage’ doesn’t begin to describe what he’s about to do to her and everyone she knows.”

Simpson is best known for his work on “House of Cards” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” as well as for his Emmy Award nominated turn on “Westworld.” He is currently starring opposite Sir Ben Kingsley and Jacki Weaver in “Perpetual Grace, Ltd” and recently finished production on Tate Taylor’s “Breaking News in Yuba County” alongside Allison Janney, Regina Hall, and Mila Kunis. TV Review: ‘Perpetual Grace, Ltd.’ on Epix

  • Variety
MGM-owned premium cable network Epix has, for a few years, been working to define itself as an outlet for original programming. Their latest attempt, “Perpetual Grace, Ltd.,” seeks the audience’s favor by cloaking itself both the familiar. The show’s cast includes familiar faces like Jimmi Simpson of “Westworld,” Terry O’Quinn of “Lost,” and Oscar nominees Sir Ben Kingsley and Jacki Weaver; its giddy amorality-in-the-American-sticks formula seems borrowed from “Ozark,” which itself owes a debt to “Breaking Bad.” Little here feels new, and it’s not a skillful enough pastiche to demand you find Epix on your dial.

Simpson plays a con artist who seeks to ensnare a pair of religious leaders who seem like easy marks; he plans to have them kidnapped so that he can pretend to be their son and enrich himself with their life insurance. While Simpson’s James easily meshes into this

Jimmi Simpson Says ‘Perpetual Grace, Ltd’ Is Like ‘City of Lost Children’ – But With a Love Story

Epix describes its upcoming 10-part series “Perpetual Grace, Ltd” as a “modern noir drama.” But Jimmi Simpson’s way of pitching the show, which also stars Ben Kingsley and Jacki Weaver, might offer you just a little more insight into what’s in store for viewers who tune in for the premiere this Sunday. Or possibly make it even less clear, but more intriguing.

“It’s like a stylized ‘The City of Lost Children.’ And then it pauses and tells you about love and how real it is. It just lands, too,” the “Westworld” alum told TheWrap during an interview at the Television Critics Association press tour in February.

Ok, let’s rewind so you understand a little better why Simpson is comparing “Perpetual Grace” to a 1995 sci-fi, surrealist film starring Ron Perlman, which tells the story of a scientist who kidnaps children to steal their dreams, in hopes that they slow his aging process.

‘Perpetual Grace, Ltd’ Trailer: Stealing from People Is a Bad Idea in New Neo-Noir Series

‘Perpetual Grace, Ltd’ Trailer: Stealing from People Is a Bad Idea in New Neo-Noir Series
If the last few decades of entertainment history has taught us two things, it’s that you shouldn’t mess with a character played by Ben Kingsley and you really shouldn’t mess with a character played by Jacki Weaver. The core of “Perpetual Grace, Ltd” is watching one would-be grifter discover these empirical truths for himself.

Jimmi Simpson plays James, a wandering con man who stumbles on a pair of potential prey he couldn’t have accounted for: Ma (Weaver) and Pa (Kingsley). As the husband and wife leaders of a church, the two have been perpetuating an extensive scheme of their own by slowly pilfering money from their parishioners for years.

The series, set for an early June release date, comes from Steven Conrad and Bruce Terris, who previously worked together on the Amazon Prime Video series “Patriot.” After writing and directing all of that show’s Season

MGM Studios Projects 40% Earnings Drop Amid Epix Now Launch

  • Variety
MGM announced this week that it expects a 40% decline in earnings in 2019 as it invests in its Epix Now streaming service.

The company said in February that it would launch Epix Now at $5.99 per month, joining other premium channels that have already rolled out over-the-top services. In order to attract subscribers, Epix is rolling out a slate of original programming to accompany its traditional movie offerings.

MGM co-founded Epix with Viacom and Lionsgate in 2008, and bought out the other two partners in a $1 billion deal in 2017. In an earnings call on Tuesday, MGM executives said Epix is projected to lose $50 million to $70 million this year as MGM invests in content to grow the service.

The delay of “Bond 25” to April 2020 has also put a damper on this year’s projections. The next installment of the Bond franchise was initially set to debut in November 2019, but was pushed back when
