    Russia is by far the largest country on Earth. Spanning 11 time zones, Russia From Above is the unprecedented endeavour to capture the length and breadth of this vast country from a bird's eye view. This is Russia as it has never been seen before and includes a number of spectacular locations granted film permits for the very first time in cinematic history. The worlds best aerial cameras spent nine months capturing the spectacular beauty, unique wildlife and colourful people of Russia. From the icebreakers on the Polar Sea to the antelopes in the Kalmykia steppes, from the active volcanoes of Kamchatka to the Europes highest peak on Mount Elbrus.

      The 5 episode TV series of Russia from Above enjoyed the highest audience ratings of all time for any documentary series on German television, when it aired on the national broadcaster ZDF over the 2018-2019 Christmas - New Year holiday period with approximately 30 million viewers! A 90 minutes special edit of the tv series was broadcast on the French-German joint channel ARTE on primetime in both German and French languages, topping the highest ratings of all programmes in 2018 for ARTE Germany.

      A Russian language version of the 90 min special edition opened the Moscow International Documentary Film Festival "Doker" in 2019, to a sold-out crowd of 1,600 in Russia's biggest movie theatre "Oktobyr" in Moscow. Russia from Above was extended to a 120 minutes theatrical 4K format in original Cinemascope, with narration from John Malkovich (English version), Benjamin Völz (German), and Sergey Chonishvili (Russian). The English version of the 5 episodes TV series was narrated by Tim Birkett for BBC UKTV and other territories.

    There always is a "but"
    It's filmed beautifully, yes. Not that every one of us will have a chance to look at Russia "from above".

    But.

    The first thing you see is nature. That supposed to mean the movie should be apolitical. The creators, apparently, thought otherwise and put a few corresponding comments. Just why? Are you able to look at nature and see... well, nature, not a state it belongs to, and, the more so, not include your own opinions on this state 'cause people come to watch some great pictures, not to listen to some political stuff as if hidden under neutral tone?

    The second thing is the absence of any storytelling logic. The first moment you are in the polar zone, the next -- in the south. Then you're in the Arctic again and then in some third place. The two biggest cities are shown twice. Why? Many people have already heard of them.

    Just for the opportunity to look at these various landscapes from the sky
