Unless you've done it yourself, you have no idea how hard it is not only to write and block out a feature film but actually shoot it with very limited money and calling on favours etc. As a no-budget indie producer myself, I can say Adriano and his family and crew has pulled this off and has my respect.
I'm about a year late to this party, I was out of town for every local screening, and getting the Amazon Prime to work in Canada was an exercise in patience, but I'm glad I stuck with it.
There were more than a few moments that stood out to me: the claustrophobic shooting and editing that was perfectly executed. Exposing just enough image without looking fake for the night scenes (they are so hard to shoot at night). Thoughtful attention to sound design. Decisions in the edit suite that kept lingering attention on what mattered when appropriate vs choppy editing. Really clean colour pass (again the night scenes are very tricky). This film is beautiful to watch.
I really enjoyed everyone's performance. Rosa was a standout. I'm not sure if she's interested in acting as a career or as a fan, but I'd enjoy seeing her again. She held the entire film together over a very long shoot and must be commended.
My only criticism which has struck a chord with other reviewers is that damned licence plate. I would have comped in a fake plate number or just keep it. Why hide it?
Enjoying EMP brings me back to 2001 for my indie horror film: Bikini Party Massacre. Universally agreed to be the second worst movie of all times with a 2.5 rating. The worst movie is up for debate but it's definitely not this one.
