Star Salma Hayek was shocked when she was asked to reprise in this sequel her small supporting part of Sonia Kincaid from The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017). She said: "Quite frankly, I was shocked. I've been in so many movies where we get the call, 'Oh my God, you're one of the most liked characters in the film'. For the first time, there was a director that said, 'I'm gonna listen to the audience'. But I didn't trust him. At the beginning, I said, 'Oh, he's just exaggerating. He's just being nice'. But then when we started talking about it, he told me the story-line and then I realized, 'oh, my God, this guy is not just for real, but he also wants me involved in the process."

The possibility of another sequel has been touted by the film's director Patrick Hughes prior to the picture's premiere in June 2021. He said of another sequel in an interview: "It dawned on me during the first film that the endlessly suffering fool who is Michael Bryce, must suffer endlessly, therefore we must endlessly make sequels. As a result, the sequel does leave things ready for another film. All we can say is that it sets Ryan up to suffer. Endlessly."

The movie's two African-American co-stars, Morgan Freeman and Samuel L. Jackson, have worked together before, but this is their first feature film collaboration. 'The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard' represented a long-awaited reunion for Jackson and Freeman. The latter said: "Jackson is phenomenal. We worked together in New York back in the '80s when he was a kid, and we haven't worked together since. But I've seen almost every movie he's ever made and always admired his actor's chops - he's always totally believable whatever situation you see him in." According to a 1993 article in Deseret News, "Jackson met Freeman when both were struggling stage actors in New York" whilst a Jackson biography declares that he was mentored by Freeman in his early career.

Greg Powell's second unit direction was mainly focused on the big outdoor stunt scenes involving vehicles and boats. For him, the most impressive to stage was the chase scene in which a pipe-laden plumber's van, pursued by an SUV, drives down steps. Because the sequence appears twice in the film - once with the careful Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) behind the wheel, and again with Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) hammering the accelerator - the scene needed to be planned twice as well. Vans are not ideal high-speed stunt vehicles, and the scene required this van to beat out a four-wheel-drive SUV. The stunt was staged in the Croatian port city of Rijeka, and Powell surprised his team by choosing to shoot on ancient Roman steps. "We got permission and protected the steps as much as possible - then we jumped the van and Range Rover off the top!" said Powell. "Vans are just rubbish at jumping, so I was really pleased when they got to the bottom because I was half convinced the wheels were going to come off the van." But protecting ancient Roman steps wasn't the only car-chase challenge. "We were often under a lot of restrictions because of the narrow streets and shiny cobbled surfaces, which are slippery as hell, especially when damp," he says. "We'd have scenes that called for us to be speeding around corners, but we literally couldn't. No serious damage done, though, apart from wiping out a few tables and chairs."

Ryan Reynolds in this sequel returns to the role of bodyguard Michael Bryce, much to the malevolent delight of director Patrick Hughes who said: "Poor Ryan just goes through the absolute wringer. Michael Bryce is suffering no matter what he does. The rule when I was developing the script is that nothing goes in his favor. If the first film put him in therapy, then this one's going to put him in hospital. I wanted him to be hit by a car, run over by a boat, punched in the face, shot, stabbed, burnt, and drowned." Hughes continued: "Ryan Reynolds has got it all - he's hugely talented, just gorgeous looking. Maybe that's why I just loved any stunt that hurt Ryan. You're not allowed to hurt people in real life, that's just wrong and, besides, he's my friend. But apparently when you make a movie, you just put it in the script, and you can hit them with a car."

"I couldn't help but wonder, what the hell would have happened to Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) after that road trip with Kincaid?", asked director Patrick Hughes, who returns to direct 'The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard' following the first film's breakthrough success. "Kincaid felt like this overbearing, disapproving father figure throughout that film, and Bryce has massive and deep-rooted validation issues. It felt to me that Bryce would certainly be in therapy. There was a real potential to explore the family dynamic." That family dynamic takes form as Kincaid's wife - the international con artist Sonia Kincaid - embraces her role as a mother figure. She'd actually be pretty good at it if not for her extreme mania - if anything, she's even more volatile than her husband - but she does have a way of sympathetically making peace between Bryce and Kincaid.

"That's the key to these movies," said director Patrick Hughes. "Ryan and Sam know exactly how to play off of each other, and that makes them a classic odd couple. Their characters are chalk and cheese. Darius Kincaid with his cool swagger against Michael Bryce's snarky OCD. Their chemistry is off the charts. When you throw Salma into the mix, it's even more fun - these actors are all experts in how audiences perceive them and play with those expectations in hugely entertaining ways."

The ancient and charming Croatian fishing town of Rovinj, on the Istrian coast, stood in for many Italian Amalfi Coast locations, and across the Italian border in the historic city of Trieste, the film was able to shoot at the beautiful Miramare Castle, inside the grand Trieste Prefettura, and on the Piazza Unita.

The action includes fights: fist fights, gun fights, knife fights, wrestling. These were the bailiwick of stunt coordinator Adam Horton and his team. "We allowed the actors to do as much as possible as long as it was safe," he said. "Ryan Reynolds is, of course, great at all this stuff - he's very creative and had a load of input. And Salma Hayek also did a lot herself - she's a ball of fun to work with. But clearly for many things, you need to use stunt doubles, and to make that convincing, you not only have to pull off the stunt, but also take on the character, the stunt-person has to look like the actor, pick up the character's mannerisms and tics, how they walk, and their body language." Horton continued: "As you plan out these fights, you take into account character personalities and mannerisms, what they've gone through at that point of the story, where the story's going next, and the connection with who they are fighting - what's their incentive?. You're also working with many other departments - the set designer, to ensure that the set and props react safely; the armorer, to make sure the correct weapons are there and safe to use in the space; the special effects team, for safety and timing of any effects needed; wardrobe, because costumes need to allow the cast and stuntmen to move as required; and, of course, with the director to ensure he's getting what he needs."

A key crew member from the first film returning for another tour of duty was second unit director and stunt supervisor Greg Powell. For Powell, the challenge - as it is on any high octane, stunt-filled movie - was keeping what audiences see feel fresh, exciting, and entertaining. The showdown on Aristotle Papadopoulos (Antonio Banderas)'s yacht was the stunt team's time to shine. Stunt coordinator Adam Horton said: "All fight scenes have challenges, but especially this one, because there are six separate fights taking place that are interacting and inter-cutting with each other. Following the story and making sure that the audience wouldn't get lost was really important, so we worked with the editors before we filmed it. The water sequence leading up to a standoff with the arch villain and his henchmen on his yacht, with nail-biting chaos, gunfire and explosions, was a highlight for stunt supervisor and second unit director Greg Powell. Filmed in the quiet and picturesque harbor of Ravinj, the sequences required split-second timing involving a hair-raising speedboat chase through the Greek billionaire's heavily armed thugs. The stunt includes several speedboats, henchmen on jet skis, an unlucky passing vessel whose cargo of barrels explodes, and armed divers on water fly-boards. The scene took several days to perfect and film. Powell said: "We mapped it out on the water, and changed things on a daily basis, adding chases, to keep it exciting, unexpected and edgy. That was really enjoyable."
