Interesting but uneven and miscast
2 December 2020 | by hampersnow-28905See all my reviews

Complete Strangers could have ended up being a complete mess but instead is actually mildly interesting and entertaining, although maybe in ways writer/director/actor Pau Maso did not intend. The locations are beautiful, the apartments and homes , even the clothing used are stylish and are greatly used to set a tone. The movie is well filmed and the supporting cast are all excellent, Matthew Crawley and Sian Abrahams really do well and steal the film. The story , while predictable , still kept me watching. What completely ruins this film, is that although Maso did a decent job in directing it, he isn't a great writer and this film contains dialogue and scenes so cringeworthy I was laughing out loud and I don't think that was the intended effect. The film centers around Robert, a character Maso has written for himself and he is a horrible actor. Not only wooden but you have no idea if the Robert lead is mentally ill or just a moron. While he speaks English well and the film has an obvious international cast, his accent coupled with the bad and at times overwrought delivery of every line completely destroys the film. Sometimes writer/directors need to hand the lead over to someone else and this is a perfect example of a potentially good movie ruined by bad casting.
