A beauty with a dark heart
17 March 2019 | by debbiedebdeb-04238See all my reviews

I saw Automata when it screened at a festival this weekend. I had heard a bit about it back when the filmmakers ran a crowdfunder. I couldn't contribute at the time so I was glad to get a chance to see it!

And I was not disappointed. I kind of knew it would be right up my street - a cursed doll, a period setting and a good old-fashioned mystery. It's a low budget film but that doesn't really show. The film is beautifully shot. It reminded me a bit of Suspiria (the original) and Mario Bava with the neon lighting, but it's definitely not a Giallo. It has more in common with the old Roger Corman films.

I'd say if you're not a fan of classic horror, you might not 'get' it, but I loved it. Super creepy, lots of fun and it had something to say, which surprised me actually. I was expecting something like Annabelle but yeah it's really not that.

A small (but annoying) proportion of people in the audience definitely didn't 'get' the film and were quite rude, so I'd recommend watching this one in the comfort of your own home if you can. Hopefully it gets some kind of release soon.
