HolyPlaces TV takes you today to Susita (soo si tuh), or Hippos, the horse city in the majestic Golan Heights. A few minutes' drive from the Sea of Galilee hides an old city that flourished through Hellenic and Roman times. The city stands on a rectangle hill top, 350 meter above the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. First explored in 1885 by a German expedition, the city occupies an area of approximately 37 acres and was first built in the 2 nd century BC. In those times the sovereign of the holy land were the mighty Seleucids [si-loo-sid] empire kings. To reinsure their Sovereignty they built cities in the region, including Susita. From its early days the city was defined as ''Polis'' [pĆ³lis] which gave her benefits and a respectable status. In 63 BC the Roman Empire began to gain lands in the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, including the holy land.
