Legend tells that Chinese New Year started with a mythical beast called the Nian, that would eat villagers, especially children. Then one year, the villagers decided to hide from the beast. Before the villagers could hide, an old man appeared and said that he would stay the night and would get revenge on the Nian. The villagers thought he was crazy. The old man put red papers up and set off firecrackers. The day after, the villagers found that their town had not been damaged. They then thought that the old man was a god sent to save them. They were to learn that the Nian was afraid of the colour red and loud noises. When the New Year was near, the villagers would wear red clothes, hang red lanterns, and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. The villagers would also set off firecrackers to frighten away the Nian. From that point on, the Nian never came to the village again; and was eventually captured by Hongjun Laozu, an ancient Taoist monk, who used the Nian as his mount. So why ...
