Synopsis

  • Holy Places TV takes you climb on Mount Tabor, and visit de Church of the Transfiguration. Located in Lower Galilee, at the edge of Nazareth hills, Mount Tabor rises to a height of 562 meters, and therefore stands out above its surroundings as a rounded dome. Mount Tabor can be seen from miles around demonstrating its strategic importance. According to Christian tradition, Jesus climbed to an unnamed « high mountain » with three disciples and was glorified before them, while conversing with Moses and Elijah. The church is part of a Franciscan monastery complex that was completed more or less around 1923 by the architect Antonio Barluzzi. We can see the ruins of an ancient Byzantine church and a 12th century church during the cruises. There is also a Greek Orthodox church located on Mount Tabor. The Church of Transfiguration has three caves belonging to the church of the Crusaders. These are three chapels built by Peter as a gift for Jesus Moses and Elijah. The chapel of Christ is to the east of the church, that of Elias to the south and finally that of Moses to the north. We also observe a splendid mosaic on the roof and clad in gold. It represents the Transfiguration.

According to tradition, the Transfiguration of Jesus is an event reported by the synoptic gospels in which Jesus is transfigured on a mountain. Jesus becomes radiant, speaks with Moses and Elijah, and is called "Son" of God. The transfiguration placed Jesus above Moses and Elijah, the two pre-eminent figures of Judaism. It must be known that several mountains have been reported as being the place of the Transfiguration, as Mount Hermon. However, Mount Tabor is closer to the center of Jesus' activities and, therefore, has made it the site of the transfiguration of Christ.
