Pete the Cop said that he was with the United States Marine Corp ( 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regimental Battalion Landing Team) during peace-keeping operations in Beirut under President Ronald Reagan's direction. On October 23, 1983 the Marine Corp barracks near the Beirut Airport was attacked by truck containing 2000 pounds of explosives. There were 1800 Marines stationed in-country, and 241 US service personnel died as a result. The terrorist organization Hezbollah (back by the Iranian Government) was believed to be behind the attack, and lax security measures were said to be primary cause for the extensive damage, namely, it was hard to defend because it was on flat ground and vehicles drove by it daily to access the airport.. When the journalists refuse to drive any further with Miguel Guerrero, the European journalist says "That's why God made zoom lenses". Zoom lenses are lenses with a range of focal lengths (e.g. 17-40mm) but they do not necessarily allow close-up views of distant items. These are properly known as telephoto lenses, and telephoto zoom lenses e.g. 100-400mm are also known as tele zoom lenses. Ironically, photo-journalists most often use prime (non-zoom) telephoto lenses.
In this case, however, the journalist is using a video, and not a stills, camera and the use of zoom lenses with a considerable range of focal lengths is commonplace. See more
