Did You Know?

This episode shows 'Number One' from "The Cage", the original pilot episode of Star Trek. There, she was the unnamed intellectual, problem-solving second-in-command serving under Captain Christopher Pike on The Enterprise. And was played by Majel Barrett, who became the second wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. See more »

When the Universal Translator goes offline, the crew are speaking in different languages. You can see their mouths moving properly with the language they are speaking. Everyone's lips should have been moving to their native language as we hear a different language. This is an error that has occurred throughout Star Trek shows and movies except Star Trek: Beyond where the alien that directed the Enterprise to the planet spoke in her native language but the translator in her collar translated for her. Captain Christopher Pike: That damn holographic comm system. Tell Louvier to rip out the entire system. From now on, we'll communicate using good old-fashioned view screens. Truth is, I never liked the holograms. They look too much like ghosts.
Number One: [amused] Hm.
Captain Christopher Pike: He told you I'd say that.
Number One: No. I told him.

An Obol for Charon
17 February 2019 | by Prismark10See all my reviews

Rebecca Romijn turns up as Number One from the Enterprise. The character played by Majel Barrett in The Cage. If she is a recurring character surely she would have to be given a name unless she really was christened Number One.

She brings news of Spock to Captain Pike who plots a course to follow his escape shuttle. However the Discovery is threatened by a mysterious sphere that has disrupted the ship's communication systems.

Meanwhile Saru has become ill and Tilly's life is also in danger as the blob of consciousness is attached to her.

There were hints by Saru all along that the sphere might be trying to communicate. Even he does not realise it at first. I was going to say have they forgotten Star Trek 4 but that has not happened yet.

There was too much chat in this episode in all sorts of languages and too many people becoming ill.

I was surprised to discover that Stamets is not the Chief Engineer of Discovery. It leads me to question what is his role and where is the chief engineer?

The episode paid tribute to Doctor Who by reversing the polarity.
