Ashford Castle, Ireland

Giles and Monica go to the west coast of the Republic of Ireland to visit a 800 year old castle that dates back to Norman times.

It was once owned by the Guinness family who had the pleasure of King George V staying at the property. It was later bought by a hotelier but it hit troubled times after the financial crash of 2007 when the hotel fell into receivership. Staff had to be let go, others took pay cuts until it was purchased by its present owners.

The castle are for those visitors who want to stay in a genuine castle. It obviously is aimed at those international visitors who think the British Isles is full of heritage castles that are incidentally also hotels.

This hotel has its own historian as well as be able to try out falconry or clay pigeon shooting. As in other episodes Monica mucks in, helps out in the kitchen. Giles tries to gets to grip with hoovering the walls, high waiter service and greet the guests at the gate with his cut glass English accent which might not be the Irish welcome that the guests might had been expecting.
