Alex Garland's New War Movie Just Cracked A24's Top 20 Highest Grossing Chart At The Global Box Office
Image
The new war movie from filmmaker Alex Garland has pulled off a major box office feat for A24. Garland began his career as a novelist, but he broke into film when his 1996 novel The Beach was adapted into a movie in 2000. Although the adaptation was written by John Hodge (Trainspotting), Garland later collaborated with The Beach director Danny Boyle, writing the screenplays for his movies 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and the upcoming 28 Years Later.

Eventually, the roster of Alex Garland movies began to expand even more. After writing the screenplay for 2012's Dredd, he made his feature-length directorial debut with the 2014 sci-fi movie Ex Machina, which he also wrote. He then went on to both write and direct the 2018 Jeff VanderMeer adaptation Annihilation, the 2022 horror movie Men, and the 2024 dystopian thriller Civil War in addition to creating the FX series Devs, for which he wrote and directed all eight episodes.

‘The King of Kings’ Hits One Last Milestone as Theatrical Run Starts to Slow
Image
There has rarely been a time as promising as now for faith-based movies. With The Chosen: Last Supper trilogy and other Dallas Jenkins properties proving biblical adventures are as popular as ever, it's true that the release of Seong-ho Jang's The King of Kings was perfectly timed. Massively surpassing many people's expectations as to what it could achieve, Jang's tale of Charles Dickens (Kenneth Branagh) and his young son's trip to the past as they witness the life of Jesus Christ, voiced by Oscar Isaac, has been an almighty hit, even hitting another major box office milestone despite its theatrical run slowing down.

In total, The King of Kings has now surpassed the $65 million mark globally, split between $59.1 million in domestic revenue and $6.8 million from overseas markets. Not only is this enough for it to overtake DreamWorks' big-budget animated financial failureThe Road to El Dorado domestically, it also...

Marcus Theatres’ Q1 Loss Widens On Softer Than Expected Box Office Before ‘Minecraft’, ‘Sinners’ Turned Things Around
Image
Marcus Theatres, the nation’s no. 4 chain, saw losses in the March quarter grow to $6.3 million from $5.7 million on a softer box office and higher costs before A Minecraft Movie and Sinners reignited moviegoing in April.

Revenue rose 7.5% to $87.4 million due largely to four more operating days vs the prior year period.

The company cited higher film costs as a percentage of admissions revenues and higher labor expenses vs a strike-crippled Q1 2024.

Attendance rose 7% and average ticket prices fell 5% on the impact of pricing promotions like the $7 Everyday Matinee and Value Tuesday, and an “unfavorable ticket mix” with an increased number of family films. Captain America: Brave New World, Mufasa: The Lion King, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dog Man and Moana 2 were the top performers.

Concession revenues per customer rose 2.9%.

“While the overall performance of the first quarter film slate was disappointing, the start to the second quarter has...

New Biblical Movie Crosses Major Global Box Office Milestone On 2025 Chart
Image
While they are not always popular in the mainstream, faith-based movies have the potential to do well at the box office. Some of these titles are overtly religious, such as the 2024 Alan Ritchson drama Ordinary Angels. Other titles that get looped in the faith-based subcategory are less overtly God-infused but still resonate with Christian messaging. One such success is Sound of Freedom, a 2023 movie about a government agent who attempts to rescue children from child traffickers. Sound of Freedom made a remarkable $250.5 million at the worldwide box office.

2025 has already been strong for Christian-centric works. Episodes of the Biblical series The Chosen: Last Supper were released in theaters and performed remarkably well, given that they were also slated to hit the small screen. These episodes ended up making just shy of $25 million worldwide, makingThe Chosen the no. 30 highest-grossing title at the 2025 box office. Now, another faith-based title is succeeding at the box office,...

‘The King of Kings’ Is Poised Overtake One of DreamWorks’ Biggest Global Box Office Bombs
Image
Considering how well Christian-themed movies have done in recent months, Mel Gibson may be relieved about the box office prospects of his planned sequel to The Passion of the Christ. With $57 million domestically and over $6 million from overseas markets, The King of Kings has generated nearly $64 million worldwide so far. It is still an impressive feat as the film is facing multiple new releases and big-budget films at cinemas in North America. Scroll below for the deets.

The animated family movie has been in theatres for about two weeks and opened with $19.37 million in the US. It broke a 27-year-old record by surpassing The Prince of Egypt‘s debut weekend number in the US. The Biblical feature experienced a great boost on Easter last weekend. Box-Office Weekend: Sinners Still on Top
Image
For a second consecutive weekend, Sinners held the top spot of the box-office weekend. This weekend, however, was by a considerably larger margin than last weekend’s $4.3 million as it bested the second-place film this weekend by $19.8 million.

In its second weekend of release, Sinners made $45.0 million for Warner Bros. as it raised its two-week total to $122.5 million. Meanwhile, the twentieth anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith took second place with $25.2 million over the weekend. This brought the film’s overall gross to $405 million. Debuting in third place with $24.5 million was Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2. Just behind that, with $22.7 million, was last weekend’s second-place film, A Minecraft Movie, which dropped two spots but has still brought in $380.1 million for Warner Brothers. Debuting in fifth place with $8.0 million was the Screen Gems release Until Dawn.

After climbing to third place last weekend,...

‘Sinners’ hits $100 million milestone as ‘Revenge of the Sith’ tops ‘Accountant 2’
Image
Update April 27, 2025: Sinners continued its box-office domination over the April 25-27 weekend, defying expectations with an impressive $45 million haul. This marks only a 6 percent drop from its $48 million opening — an exceptional achievement for any film, but particularly rare within the horror genre, where box-office totals typically experience steep declines after opening weekend. So far, Sinners has grossed $122.5 million in North America.

Meanwhile, second place came from a galaxy far, far away: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith grossed $25.2 million from Disney's 20th anniversary re-release. That's an impressive feat for a film that has been readily accessible for two decades and is currently streaming on Disney+. The Accountant 2 settled for third place with $24.5 million, followed by A Minecraft Movie with $22.7 million, and Until Dawn with $8 million. After recording just two $100 million+ weekends in the first quarter of 2025, every weekend in April has successfully surpassed the $100 million milestone.

‘King of Kings’ Continues Impressive Run at Global Box Office After Quadrupling Its Reported Budget
Image
Now in its third week of release, Angel Studios’ animated offering The King of Kings appears to be slowing down. The movie’s release was timed to capitalize on the Easter weekend, which it did. But it has now started losing theaters to newer movies, especially at the domestic box office. The King of Kings recently passed what will likely be its final milestone, as it attempts to generate whatever little extra revenue that it can from overseas markets. The movie opened in the wake of The Chosen: Last Supper series, and ended up comfortably out-grossing it.

It has now made nearly $55 million domestically, and another $4 million from overseas markets, for a cumulative global haul of almost $60 million. Produced on a reported budget of $15 million, The King of Kings is the second-biggest hit in Angel Studios’ history. The outfit specializes in content aimed at religious audiences, barring the occasional misinformation-spreader...

'Sinners' Is Singing Loud In Landmark Second Weekend at Domestic Box Office
Image
Not since Jordan Peele's Get Out in pre-pandemic 2018 have scenes like this been witnessed at the box office, especially in the context of horror movies. Director Ryan Coogler's Sinners is all set to top the domestic charts for the second time in a row, with a hold so remarkable that it'll leave everybody stunned. Sinners grossed $13 million on its second Friday, as it heads towards a $42 million haul over the weekend. The vampire movie made $48 million in its debut frame, registering the top opening weekend haul for an R-rated horror movie in the post-pandemic era.

If Sinners lives up to expectations, it will have delivered a second weekend hold superior to that of Peele's Get Out, from -13% versus -15%. The film's running domestic haul stands at $90 million, which matches its reported production budget; it will pass the $100 million mark tomorrow. Incidentally, the movie was expected to generate around $30 million this weekend.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Reaches Nether-Level Box Office Milestone Ahead of Fourth Weekend in Theaters
Image
A Minecraft Movie is set to enter its fourth full weekend in theaters, and the film has already passed yet another gargantuan box office milestone. At the time of writing, Minecraft has grossed a whopping $355 million in domestic markets and $372 million internationally, which has helped its global cumulative haul eclipse $725 million at the global box office. The Jack Black-led video game adaptation is already the highest-grossing movie of the year at the domestic box office after passing Captain America: Brave New World, and it has its sights set on becoming the highest-grossing video game movie ever. However, if A Minecraft Movie wants to pass The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it still needs to add around $630 million to its total, which could be a long shot as things are starting to slow down.

A Minecraft Movie, which also stars Jason Momoa, kicked off its box office run with a forceful $162 million domestic debut,...

'The Chosen' Franchise Passes a Major Box Office Milestone Thanks to 'The Last Supper'
Image
There are no two ways about it: The Chosen: Last Supper is a successful theatrical experiment, and one that should ideally inspire other networks and studios to be more open to new release strategies. The fifth season of the biblical television series The Chosen, titled Last Supper was released in three installments across three weeks, all building towards Easter. While the three "films" underwhelmed towards the end, their performances leading up to Easter weekend were nothing short of excellent. Combined, the Last Supper "movies" have emerged as the franchise's top-grossing chapter. The franchise itself has attained new heights.

Having begun its theatrical journey only in 2021, The Chosen has now grossed a combined total of over $115 million worldwide. It passed the $100 million mark in combined revenue during Last Supper's run. Although the series was front-loaded, it ended up grossing a combined total of just under $45 million, passing the fourth season to...

Did You Know Dwayne Johnson Was Considered For Jack Reacher But Lost Out To Tom Cruise Due To Height?
Image
Dwayne Johnson Lost Role To Tom Cruise ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )

Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, once had a chance to take on the role of Jack Reacher, but the part ultimately went to Tom Cruise. Known for his massive presence and action-packed roles, Johnson seemed like a natural fit for the character from Lee Child’s book series. However, despite his popularity and proven track record in Hollywood, Cruise was cast as the iconic, no-nonsense hero in the 2012 film adaptation.

It was a casting decision that surprised many, considering Dwayne Johnson’s established action star status. While Cruise took the lead, Johnson’s career didn’t skip a beat. The missed opportunity with Jack Reacher didn’t hold him back; instead, it paved the way for even bigger roles. From Fast & Furious to Jumanji, Johnson’s star continued to rise, solidifying him as one of Hollywood’s top action...

‘The King of Kings’ Just Overtook ‘The Chosen: Last Supper’s Combined Box Office Earnings
Image
It was a crowded marketplace for faith-based projects this past weekend, with Angel Studios' animated offering The King of Kings coming out on top. The film beat out all three installments of The Chosen's fifth season, which was released theatrically as The Chosen: Last Supper. Although Last Supper is the top-grossing installment in the television series' history, it has now been overtaken domestically by The King of Kings, and that, too, in just 10 days. The movie, which has been produced and directed by a team of Korean filmmakers, has generated over $45 million domestically so far.

The King of Kings opened to $19 million in its first weekend, and grossed over $17 million in its sophomore frame. On both occasions, it beat The Prince of Egypt. The DreamWorks classic grossed over $100 million domestically and over $200 million worldwide back in 1998, making the most of a holiday run. It's still unclear, however, if The King of Kings...

‘Sinners’ achieved something no other horror film has done while toppling ‘Minecraft’ and winning box office
Image
Update April 20, 2025: There’s a new box-office champion for the April 18-20 weekend. Ryan Coogler's Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, dominated the competition with a $45.6 million debut, securing the top spot. The vampire film not only exceeded projections but achieved something no other horror film has done before. As noted by Deadline, Sinners received an A grade from CinemaScore, the first time in the tracking firm's nearly 50-year history that a horror film has earned that rating from exit audiences. Lauded film and genre classics like A Quiet Place, The Lost Boys, and The Conjuring all managed A-minus scores. Not even the Oscar-winning Get Out could get higher than that. But Sinners, one of the best-reviewed films of the year and already drawing Oscar buzz, managed to make the grade, notching a new milestone.

Meanwhile, A Minecraft Movie — widely expected to win its third consecutive weekend — settled for second place with $41.3 million.

A new film tops the box-office weekend as Sinners debuted in first place taking the top spot by the slim margin of $4.3 million from last weekend’s top film.

In its first weekend of release, the Warner Bros. release of Sinners took in $45.6 million for the studio. Meanwhile, Angel Studios saw its offering of The King of Kings drop a spot to land in third place with $17.3 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its overall total to $45.3 million for the studio. Box Office Roundup: 'Sinners' Crushes 'Minecraft' in Easter Weekend Battle
Image
Sinners not only sank its fangs into the weekend box office, but it surprisingly drew enough blood to even dethrone A Minecraft Movie. The Jason Momoa and Jack Black-led video game adaptation just missed out on repeating at No. 1 for the third weekend in a row, having made an estimated $41.3 million domestically. However, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s vampire flick won the No. 1 spot with an even more impressive opening-weekend take of $45.6 million. Sinners went on to make an additional $15.4 million internationally en route to a worldwide total of $61 million against a $90 million production budget.

Fans and critics alike were bewitched by Coogler and Jordan’s must-see vampire film. Sinners not only boasts a nearly perfect "Certified Fresh" 98% on the Tomatometer, but audiences’ reactions to the scary flick, which have been posted to Rotten Tomatoes, also resulted in a "Verified Hot" 97% Popcornmeter — formerly the Rt audience score.
