The best revival
mattelgirl9 December 2019
Oh my gosh - I just watched the first two episodes on my Delta flight and I want more. The characters and writing is perfect - exactly like/where you would expect them to be. I need this in my life right now.

It is smart writing and because the acting is so good - it feels like you are peeking in to their lives again.

Please keep this on!!

So love everything about this but....
mrsphilip22 November 2019
A. The actors seamlessly slip right back into their old characters. 2. The writing is quite funny. However, Helen Hunt went waaay overboard on the plastic surgery and it detracts from her otherwise stellar performance. That's my only gripe.

Loved this show the first time it aired and they've stepped right back into their characters. Will have to try not to binge in order to make it last.

Only on Spectrum?
filmmakerken20 November 2019
The built in audience for this show is people over 40 who remember the original but you're going to cut off many of those viewers by airing on a platform with limited availability? Very stupid.

Wonderful show
miguel_lupi00-30-73956319 December 2019
I can only rate the first two episodes but they are wonderful. As good as the original series at the very least, and that was one of the best shows of its time. Please make the show available in any form / platform, besides Spectrum.

Poor poor planning
emerald-rabbit-561-14092120 November 2019
So they decide to do this on some new cable (internet, etc.) service. This is only available to watch on Spectrum. STUPID DECISION!!! The original show aired in NBC, a channel everyone can get. But hey, maybe there were issues with the network. Next logical places to go would be Netflix or Hulu, two well established streaming services. But noooo! They put the new series on Spectrum, which is limited anyway! Even if I wanted to get Spectrum, I couldn't because it's not available in my area. I don't doubt that this series will be awesome, but it's likely going to get extremely low viewership based on its airing platform. Good job, guys! You lost more than half of your existing viewers. Morons.

Witty reboot of the original series
sandercocksl1 December 2019
Love the reboot but I do agree that Helen Hunt's plastic surgery makes her look disfigured and her face is a distraction to the show. Also, the sidekick and his Italian girlfriend really grate on the nerves after streaming episode after episode. Their PDA's are too much and saccharine-sweet. And speaking Italian all the time is so contrived.

Spectrum isn't a streaming service.
ttss-8624321 November 2019
Spectrum that use to be Charter Communications,is a cable service. Due to this fact why it's not, available depending on your cable service provider. Spectrum is a well established company,so not like a new service.. Why it got chosen to air just on Spectrum who knows but I see other services, that offer entertainment not available to me. Hoping it does though get extended out into more, cable providers or eventually streaming services for everyone to enjoy. On that note- Can't wait until December, for new episodes. Binged watched all currently, available in one night.

Great package of a season
ndpetsch12 January 2020
I really enjoyed the entire 12 episodes as a whole. There is fantastic continuity between episodes and great call backs from the original series. All of the characters are well written, developed and likable. Thoroughly enjoyed this reboot. I hope another season is made.

Hit some good notes but mostly disappointing
tlbedman25 December 2019
Although the chemistry between Helen Hunt and Paul Reisner is still good, I felt the overall series used itself as a political platform instead of the personal comedy of the original. I thought I had issues with my daughter, their daughter is a nightmare. It was great to see some of the old characters back especially Lisa and Ira, but some of the chemistry is missing between them. Worth a watch, but I doubt if it comes back for a second season.

But wait a minute...
wblaircox26 December 2019
They divorced at the end of the original series. It was an NBC show, all the couples ended badly. So what, they got back together when they got old? No thanks, it was ruined long ago when they started fighting who got the dog.

Poor planning for delivering reboot of "Mad About You"
jf_moran4930 November 2019
It is just poor planning for the delivering of the reboot of "Mad About You" that the series will only be available via a limited cable television service to which many people may not even have a chance to subscribe, to say nothing of the fact (but I shall) that it would cost an additional $100+ to subscribe to this Spectrum service, on top of whatever other utility bills a person may already have, including one's already-established cable TV service.

Also, the "Mad About You" reboot is, out of the gate, going to have an older demographic viewing it. So it really doesn't require any more impediments to further limit its viewership. Just ask the producers and entertainers who were involved in the miserable failure that was the "Murphy Brown" reboot, about how successful older viewers watching older actors may be. But that reboot at least had going for it that it aired on an over-the-air (OTA) broadcast TV network, namely CBS.

So my advice to fans of "Mad About You" who would really wish to watch the reboot but can't or won't shelve out $100+ per month to do so, is to wait until episodes are available on a DVD set, assuming that happens, which would make sense for the older fans of the series, that it also be available in a 20th Century viewing format. Either that or link up with some viewer, perhaps via a Craigslist ad (which still exits for non-adult personals), who has a Spectrum subscription and trade with that person from your own video collection in exchange for the person recording (with a DVR device or software) the 12 episodes of Season 8 of "Mad About You." It is stil perfectly legal to record off-air with a DVR or VCR (if one still has one of those antiquated 20th Century video-recording devices) for personal use, so long as no profit is being obtained for video. That is why a fair trade of one video for another video is allowed, but paying for a DVR/VCR recording to another person is not.

Lastly, of course the logical question is why the original distributor of "Mad About You" would not wish to also air its reboot? And unless I am mistaken, "The Peacock Network" isn't exactly fighting off its viewers with sticks these days, so many years is it now removed from its heyday of "Must See" viewing, which involved such other bygone series' as "Cheers," "Seinfeld," "Frasier" and "Friends." And given the relative success of the "Will & Grace" reboot, one would think NBC might have at least considered taking a chance on another of its past successful series'. The fact NBC passed on a "Mad About You" reboot means probably it couldn't or wouldn't meet the exorbitant salary demands of Paul Reiser and/or Helen Hunt, and also possibly that NBC feared the viewer demographic would skew too old and too thin to warrant the investment. NBC may also have looked upon the failure of Reiser's eponymous 2011 NBC series as a barometer of how the fan base would be for even a "Mad About You" reboot.

It has been awhile since the original series was widely available in broadcast syndication. Still, if old fans were not willing to shelve out extra $$ to see older-but-proven episodes of a favorite TV series on a streaming platform (such as Hulu or Netflix), unlikely those fans would be willing to pay extra funds for an added cable TV bill either to see untried new episodes of that once-favorite series. So I guess it remains to be seen just how mad about "Mad About You" its old fans really are.

Abby Quinn is the best
mskelly-421 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
TvFor the last few months, I've seen ads for the Mad About You revival popping up in my TV Guide feed. This seem like such a weird choice, because it's not really the sort of show that needs to revival - it was about newlyweds at a very specific time in their lives. To suddenly shift to their golden years almost seems to undermine the premise.

Even stranger is Sony's choice to release this only for Spectrum cable customers. I don't know how it works where you live, but every place I've ever dwelled, the cable market isn't really competitive. It's generally one provider in the area, with the possibility of a satellite company sneaking in and siphoning off a single digit percentage of the residences. The point being, it's not the competitive field vying for eyeballs that say, the new streaming market is.

Nevertheless, I was curious. I'm the target demographic for this. I was just about old enough when it came out, and I was a fan when it was still on first run, particularly towards the end when it was not only in first run, but also constantly being syndicated. The idea of a show about a newlywed young couple, just a touch older than I was, really appealed to me. These were married folks that didn't look like my parents, in a genuinely funny presentation. One of the other things I found incredibly appealing was that it explored with the husband and the wife's foibles equally. There were plenty of episodes where Paul comes off looking ridiculous and bad, and there would be just as many episodes where Jamie looked every bit as foolish. It cuts against the grain of the modern sitcom template where the wife is wise and always correct and the husband is invariably a bumbling fool (I hated Home Improvement for this reason and the Cosby Show had lost it's luster for me long before any of the accusations started). I like that it explored both characters and presented what was actually a very edifying portrait of marriage.

So how is this new version fair?

It opens with a cute bit where Paul and Jamie discuss running into an old friend they haven't seen in 20 years and how they changed. It's clever but I don't recall this show getting meta like this and it throws me off a bit. God bless Richard Kine for coming back though. He's great. And Jon Pankow is still as much fun as ever. He's actually nicer looking as an older man, though I don't understand what on earth he's doing as a restaurant owner. What happened to the sporting goods store? I also can't help but notice Anne Ramsey is listed in the title credits of every episode though she actually only appears in two.

There's some stuff that's off though. There are the constant "wink wink" callbacks and 'memberberries that they keep dropping. Remember Ira's old flame Mary Ann? Or Fran! You remember Jamie's best friend Fran! (She and Mark are divorced now and he's remarried to a sassy new African American stereotype). After a while they start to get annoying. It's little stuff too. It's not just that the dog from the original show is dead, it's the fact that they KEEP MENTIONING IT. I probably wouldn't have really noticed Murray's absence if they didn't keep bringing him up. I'm not a dog person, but even to me this is a drag. Paul's dad is dead too (Louis Zorich actually did pass last year), and his mom is in a nursing home - looking surprisingly frail. I'm not sure I want to see her like this (perhaps that just hits too close to home for me, with my father spending his last days in a similar facility). Then of course, the whole thing with Richard Kine's character is strange as well. I realize they couldn't get Leila Kenzle back as Fran, but that doesn't make the thing with Mark make. Let's say your best friend divorces. Do you still hang out with her ex husband and his new wife instead of her (Hang out, she's even apprenticing under the new wife)?

If we want to nitpick, there's things like in ep 5, Richard Kine says Paul is well into his seventh decade. In ep 6 Paul's mom says she's 85. This math is not adding up.(If she had been a teen mom, it would have been addressed earlier). Also, I've been in my house for fourteen years. We've not come even close to remolding this place to the degree they have redone that apartment. And why does everything have to be r rated? I really don't need the S bombs, but I suppose it could be worse

Abby Quinn as the daughter is brilliant. Mable is actually the most interesting part of this series. I'd watch a spin off of just her adventures at college with periodic (and frequent) drop ins by Paul and Jamie. She channels Paul Riser in a lot of her performance and her relationship with Jamie would be perfect if...

Well that's the problem. Jamie.

Paul Riser has gotten gray and soft and fluffy in his old age. It's actually something I noticed in the second season of Stranger Things - he's lost what little edge he had that made him such a great villian in Aliens. But that's fine. He's a teddy bear with his very recognizable brand of humor still at the forefront. Helen Hunt's character on the there hand has gotten harder, with sharp edges. Her character had always been neurotic, even quirky. But it was balanced with a charm, an adorable funny style that just made you love her. I'm a fan of Helen Hunt. I like her outside of this series and followed her into her film career. Heck, I even remember her afterschool specials days. But this incarnation, it's like they took all of the ugliest aspects of Jamie's neurosis and amplified them while jettisoning everything that was charming about the character. Her husband is cucked sexually and every word out of her mouth to him seems critical. She gets mad that he smokes an occasional cigar and yet I remember her sneaking cigarettes during the 90's run. We seem to have tumbled backwards, into that sitcom formula I was so critical of earlier, where the husband is just a bumbling fool and the wife is always right, and her rightness is validated by all around her (Even in episode 4 I believe, where she's been proven demonstrably wrong, yet the episode closes with Ira speaking the words "She's always right!"). I got to be honest, I like Jamie less with each episode. She's turned into a very ugly person.

If we dive deeper into a study of these performances, I almost wonder how much of it is intentional. You could argue that Jamie has settled into the same antagonistic role that her mother filled, except not as passive aggressive as Carol Burnett or Penny Fuller played it. To that end, Paul may well just be settling down into the content and submissive role that Louis Zorich portrayed as his father Burt. We become our parents. It would be accurate. But is it good?

When you end a sitcom, you kind of want to show that the cast is moving on from one time of life to another. You want closure, but you also want to know that they are goign to be okay. That things are good. Mad About You actually did a fairly god job of this with thier series finale. They still showed struggle and growth, but ultimately we got the end we wanted. As I said at the beginning, this kind of undermines that.

So is it worth seeing? At 25 minuets per episode and only six episodes out (The back half of the 12 episode season will drop in December) you can easily plow through this in less time that it takes to watch a Marvel movie. If you have spectrum, It may be worth your time over an evening or two, particularly for the delightful Anna Quinn. It's not worth the trouble of pirating or purchasing though. If they are smart, they will eventually add this to the 90's series syndication package so everyone will have access to it in a few years. I'm curious enough to be willing to binge the last six episodes next month, but can't see how this gets a second season.

I really wanted to love this reboot, but...
c-everleigh21 February 2020
I really don't. Yet. (Full disclosure: Only watched the first episode.) I loved the original series; but times have changed and I don't feel like this series found it's way to the new millennium.

It's like it's trying too hard. Everything feels forced and overplayed; the writing is too sharp edged; the characters rather one-dimensional. The premise of their unease is uncomfortable: What worked when they were newlyweds finding their rhythm feels mired in unhealthy banter as an older couple.

Paul Reiser is brilliant in The Kominsky Method so I think it's mostly the writing at fault here. The actors can only flesh out the characters as much as the page allows....and it's not allowing much. I'm not going to give up yet, I will try a couple more episodes before abandoning ship. I owe it that much.

On a personal note: I REALLY wanted to love this show because I worked as an extra for a few years in the 90's and I was fortunate enough to WORK ON the original series for two different episodes. Loved the experiences (both). Actors were friendly and production staff top-notch and I had fond memories of the experience.

If, after watching more episodes, I feel the need to update to a more positive review, I will. Otherwise, I'll have to sadly let this stand.

Genetics

The actress that played the daughter was supposed to be the couple's genetic offspring. I could not help but being distracted that there was no physical resemblance between the actors. The show was otherwise true to itself.

Really enjoyed them, well done to all involved. Binged watched episodes, within a single night. Hope more services beyond Spectrum, decide to pick it up for others enjoyment. I think for most who've enjoyed this truly felt like,an old friend returned & being able to relate over how life changes. People mentioned about, physical appearance & so forth.. It happens! It's based on their life years later, picking up where it left off wasn't realistic. That being said, happy we got a limited revival.

RoosterElGuapo12 December 2019
This new series should be called "Mad About Your Botox". To all those complainting about networks, this is the only service that would pick this crappy show up. If more people actually wanted to watch it then it would be in a major network instead of this trial run for Spectrum.

Very nice
Tyanneh13 June 2020
At the beginning it was hard to get back into it, but after 3 episodes it started reminding me of the previous episodes. Yes, the actors changed in 20 years and yes, Helen's face has something disturbing about it, but they got back into their roles from 90s and it's believable, at least for me. The problems they face 20 years later are somewhat different, but they seem like Jamie and Paul from before.

Best Show on TV
drennard3 March 2020
I have never laughed so hard for an entire show as when I am watching this show. Hilarious. And the writing is fantastic. The chemistry between Paul and Helen is unmatched on TV today. Please, please bring it back for another season. This is what TV needs.
