MPAA Rated R for horror violence, disturbing images, language, drug use and brief graphic nudity

Sex & Nudity

  • Full frontal male and female nudity.
  • You see a smiling man naked and the scene drags in for about 10 seconds.

Violence & Gore

  • There is some blood in the house in a few scenes.
  • A character slams their head onto a table, which eventually breaks their nose, and causes blood to stream down their face. This scene is extremely disturbing.
  • There are some corpses with injury detail.
  • A character catches fire. We later see his burned corpse.
  • In one scene, we see a decapitated corpse with lots of blood all around the wound and the floor is covered in puddles of blood
  • In a sleepwalking sequence, we see a boy being eaten alive by ants. This scene is extremely frightening and disturbing.
  • A woman can be seen floating in the air, she violently saws through her throat and neck with a piece of wire until her head falls off, blood can be seen spilling, and oozing out of the wound. The decapitation self is implied.
  • A gory decapitated head can be seen lying on the road with ants eating it
  • A possessed woman repeatedly bangs her her head against an attic door. Extremely disturbing.


  • 17 uses of "fuck", 8 uses of "shit", 1 use of "damn", 1 use of "goddamn", 2 uses of "hell", and 1 use "dick."
  • At a party, teens listen to loud music that include strong language including "f*ck", "c*nt" and even "n*gg*r." Explicit lyrics/songs.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A teenage character smokes pot recreationally. Underage drinking and teen partying is seen.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The film is loaded with incredible suspense, terror and psychological horror, very disturbing images, violence (see above), not only the subject matter is also very disturbing and unsettling. The film contains scenes of demonic worship, cult practices, fiery death, seances some graphic nudity at the end. It's one of the most terrifying films in recent memory praised by audience and critics! Hereditary does not let up on extreme buildup to pure horror.
  • Intense scenes of Horror throughout. Not for the faint of Heart.

Sex & Nudity

  • There are scenes of cult member nudity, but they are completely non-sexual, and more scary. Also these scenes are all in the dark, so it is very hard to actually see any nudity.

Violence & Gore

  • A bird flies into a window (off screen). A character then kills it.
  • A character commits suicide. Very sudden and upsetting.
  • A girl has an allergic reaction to eating nuts, and sticks her head out of a car window in an effort to alleviate her difficulty breathing. Her head very suddenly and unexpectedly gets slammed into a telephone pole, decapitating her. The girl is a child, making the scene more upsetting than gory. We later see her disfigured decomposing severed head on the roadside being eaten by ants.
