  • This movie is extremely dark and depressing. There are a lot of upsetting scenes and deaths.
  • Hereditary is hailed as one of the most terrifying films ever made. There was a heart rate challenge to a screening for the premier and it was 7 points off from heart attack status.

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • A smiling man standing naked in the dark for about 10 seconds and in the end there are several other people standing naked at different intervals. There is no sexual connotation at all to the nudity. It is all in the context of the scary stuff going on and is meant to be creepy.
  • At the end of the movie there are several naked people which all their bodies are visible.

Violence & Gore

  • A bird flies into a window (offscreen). A character cuts its head off with a pair of scissors.
  • A child has her head stuck out of a car window, which suddenly collides with a telephone pole causing the child to be decapitated. Highly disturbing. The impact is shown somewhat obscured, but we later see a lengthy closeup of the disfigured decomposing severed head on the roadside being eaten by ants.
  • A character catches fire. We later see their burned corpse.
  • In a sleepwalking sequence, we see someone being eaten alive by ants.

  • Several rotting corpses and heads are depicted, having the movie end with several decapitated people worshipping a rotting head on a stick.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A lot of the horror elements in this movie deal with the supernatural. Demons, apparitions, and occult groups are a major plot point and these lead to a some of the scares.
