Margot Robbie pitched the idea of Birds of Prey to DC and Warner Bros. as a female-led superhero action movie and they agreed with her vision. "I think there's a perception that a PG female-led action film is kind of considered a chick flick," says Robbie, which is why we're going to see an R-rated version of the story. In addition to starring in the upcoming movie, Robbie is also on board as producer with her LuckyChap production company, so her hands are all over the project. Birds of Prey is LuckyChap's largest project to date at $75 million.

In Montoya's room when she receives the text from Black Canary there is a woman in a clown suit playing on the TV on her dresser. This is a scene from Days of Our Lives (1965) and the actor is Arleen Sorkin. Not only is Arleen the original voice of Harley Quinn on Batman: The Animated Series (1992) but THIS SCENE was the inspiration for the character of Harley. Paul Dini, who was friends with Arleen, saw the scene one day when he was home sick and was inspired to create the character with Arleen's voice in mind.

Both Bernie the Beaver and Harley's pet hyena are established parts of Harley Quinn lore. As in Birds of Prey, the comic book version of Bernie is a stuffed animal who, Harley is convinced can talk (he's even had his own character arcs). Harley Quinn's hyenas, meanwhile, were introduced in Batman: The Animated Series and made the jump over to the comics with their mistress. They're traditionally named Bud and Lou, after Abbott and Costello, but those names were picked by the Joker and really wouldn't work in a film where Harley is getting over her ex. The DCEU hyena is called Bruce - after "that hunky Wayne guy." Harley clearly has quite a thing for Bruce Wayne, even wearing the name "Bruce" on a dog tag.

ACE Chemicals is an established part of the DCEU, with this specific location appearing in Suicide Squad. Billy Batson practiced his superpowers at another ACE Chemicals plant in Shazam! as well. Later in the film, when Harley needs a place to arrange a meet, she chooses the Joker's turf - Amusement Mile. An abandoned amusement park in North Gotham, this is traditionally the Joker's base of operations, most famous for its role in The Killing Joke. It seems the Joker has decided to leave that for Harley, because he's taken all his equipment out and left a crate packed with Harley's few belongings. Look carefully, and you'll spot "HAHAHAHAHAH" scrawled on one window in a similar style to the Joker's laugh in The Dark Knight Returns. It also resembles the distinctive tattoos on Leto's Joker.

Harley Quinn was introduced on the big screen in Suicide Squad (2016) with Margot Robbie portraying her and giving birth to the creation of millions of Harley Quinn Halloween costumes. With this new chapter comes a different look for her character. Quinn won't be seen as an object of desire, which is very much on purpose. "That's what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer," says Birds of Prey costume designer Erin Benach. Robbie added, "Yeah, it's definitely less male gaze-y." Robbie had discussed how uncomfortable her outfits were for Suicide Squad, so that has all been altered for this film.

This interpretation of Sionis is an interesting take on his ties to Bruce Wayne. In some comics, Bruce and Roman were 'friends' as children (or at least the Sionis parents wanted to associate with the Waynes to boost their own social standing), which leads to Sionis becoming the criminal version of Batman with varying degrees of skill. In this adaptation, while Sionis sets out to present an intimidating persona to Gotham's criminals in his 'Black Mask' guise, in practice he is a petty spoiled playboy who represents what Bruce Wayne could be if he really was the rich idiot he pretends to be while having absolutely no thought for the consequences beyond what benefits him.

In one scene, Harley Quinn comments that she knows Gotham's East Side better than anyone. This is the poorest part of Gotham, and the notorious Crime Alley - site of the Wayne murders - is situated there. The Joker has never been massively active in the East Side, so this may hint that the nun orphanage Harley went to as a child was situated there. Of course, Harley Quinn isn't necessarily a reliable narrator, so the nuns may not have been quite so bad as she claims.

In an interview on The Graham Norton Show (2007), Margot Robbie stated that the original plan did consider using a trained hyena for Harley's pet. Although there was one available, hyenas are extremely territorial, and the production was warned they would not be able to reuse any part of the set the hyena touched. So, instead of an actor in a motion capture suit for full CGI animal, a large dog was used, with CGI enhancement added in post-production. Although cheaper than the other options, the effect was so expensive that the filmmakers could only afford one hyena, instead of the two appearing in the original comics.

During the film, Harley is seen dressed as Marilyn Monroe's character from 1953's "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." The big change here is that Quinn has an updated version of the gown with pants instead. Costume designer Erin Benach told Insider they almost did a completely different outfit for Quinn here. "It wasn't even really on the page or decided amongst us that it would be the same Marilyn outfit," said Benach "There were talks of it being something totally different and new, like way more Harley." The idea to transform the iconic look and update it came to Benach while in a research library. "I remember the moment where I just went, 'Oh my God, the best idea is just to take the exact Marilyn outfit and put her in pants. Turn it into pants,'" said Benach. "It was just a light bulb moment. It hit and I told [director] Cathy [Yan] and Cathy was like, 'Brilliant. Done. Do it.'"

In an interview with UPROXX, Rosie Perez admitted that while she would want to be involved in a possible sequel, there was one particular part of the narrative of Birds of Prey that rubbed her the wrong way. "I mean, if [the sequel] happens, sure. When you said that, the first thing that came to my mind was, "Oh my God, I have to lose weight and get in shape again." Hopefully, there won't be any ageist type of jokes in it as well. Having me called "grandma." That was the only thing, I was like, "Really guys? Really?" I was like, "Would you have the nerve to say that to Helen Mirren, in her 50 million action movies?"...It is what it is, but you have to take the chance, be brave enough to call it out and be ready for the consequences. I have been and I will be." Interestingly, the fact that the character of Renee Montoya was being played by an older woman was touted as part of the feminist appeal of 'Birds of Prey'. In the comics, the character of Montoya is portrayed as a young police officer, who moonlights as the anti-hero Question. Some comics purists revolted against the idea of Montoya being portrayed as a middle-aged woman in the Birds of Prey movie. They were not the only ones to take issue with the casting of Rosie Perez. In an interview given in the days following the release of the film, Perez recalled how the studio wanted to hire someone younger for the role of Montoya, and it was director Cathy Yan who rallied by her side. "Cathy Yan called me up and she was very honest with me. She said that the studio was not really keen on casting me, and that it was because of my age. I think that they were worried about presenting a more mature Renee Montoya, but also, I think they would say were worried about the physicality that was needed to pull it off. But she said, 'I want you and if you're ready to fight, I'm ready to fight.' She explained to me the point of view of the movie was of the emancipation of women, and forming an all girls gang. I said, 'I am in, this is my role, you could tell them I said that,' and she did. I went to Warner Brothers and met with everybody and they said, 'you know what, we were wrong. The role is yours.'"

Out of the main five characters, Helena, Harley, Renee, and Cassandra are all relative newcomers to the Gotham corner of the DC universe (given that it's eighty years old). Helena Bertinelli was created in 1989 to replace Helena Wayne who was previously Huntress before the Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot in 1986. Harley and Renee were created in 1992 for Batman: The Animated Series (1992). Renee appeared in the main DC Universe a few months before she was in the show but Harley didn't make the move until 1999. That was the same year that Cassandra was created for the "Batman: No Man's Land" Batfamily Crossover. Black Canary is the only "classic" character being used (created in 1947) but Dinah (Laurel) Lance didn't get powers or take over for her mother (Dinah Drake Lance) until 1983. All of them are beating much older characters to appearing in this universe like Dick Grayson or Barbara Gordon.

It is mentioned several times that Harley Quinn is a trained psychiatrist and twice that she has a PhD. It is not required for a psychiatrist to have a PhD., but only a M.D. degree. Harley Quinn does tell Cassandra Cain that she graduated from medical school, which awards the M.D. degree. It is never mentioned what Harley's PhD. is in.

The recipe takes bacon, eggs, American cheese and bread Oliver recommends ciabatta so there are "nooks and crannies for the gooey eggness to go into." Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Oliver had to go to four different stores within the week to find all the ingredients.

Harley is shown to be obsessed with food throughout the movie. She is always looking for something to eat when she's not fighting bad guys, such as pursuing a bacon, egg, and American cheese sandwich, taking refuge at a Taiwanese food shop where she orders extra-spicy Mongolian beef and robbing a grocery store because she's out of groceries (despite living above a restaurant).

Harley take on Black Mask at the so-called "Founders Pier" though that isn't a location we know from Gotham City, it seems like it could be a mashup of Founders Island in the Arkham series of games and Gotham Pier in various Batman movies and comics. That's not the only landmark familiar to gamers, as Amusement Mile, the location of the Funhouse is a key location in the North East of Gotham in both the Batman comics and the award-winning Batman: Arkham games.

Batman stays out of Gotham, for once, not even having a cameo but still getting mentioned at least twice. In fact, he seems to be absent, as Sionis is stated to have basically controlled the entire city. It's left to a trio of women who would form the Birds plus a reformed supervillain to take him down. Commissioner James Gordon and Detective Crispus Allen, both from GCPD and introduced in Justice League, are also conspicuously absent.

Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain are referred to by their civilian names, while the rest are introduced by their code names (Harley Quinn instead of Harleen Quinzel, Black Canary instead of Dinah Lance, and Huntress instead of Helena Bertinelli). Then again, neither Cassandra nor Renee use their comic book superhero identities in this story anyway. On the villains side, Roman is only ever referred to as Black Mask once.

The set was decorated with taxidermy animals, stuffed animals in cages, and live animals. The animals were loaded, one by one, into their enclosures. There was a vulture on a wood perch; a pig was housed in a wire cage; a python and lizard in a tank; a dog and cat also in cages; a capuchin monkey in wire cage; a parrot with a perch; and a fox.

We don't get to see too much of Gotham's landmarks no Wayne Manor, no Gotham Zoo, no Crime Alley in Birds of Prey, but we did get a couple of set-pieces that take place in classic territory. Ace Chemicals is the most obvious locale. Harley blows up the factory, where a man named Jack Napier turned into the Joker in Batman (1989), as a "middle finger" to her former beau. Amusement Mile, meanwhile, provided the setting for the movie's final act, and was often seen as a haunt for Harley and Joker in Batman: Arkham City.

Johnny Goth a California-based musician, was temporarily tapped to stand in as the Joker. "I knew a few people working on the film and they had heard they needed someone to be the Joker and thought it would be sick if I did it," Goth told Earshot Media. "They needed someone with similar hands to Leto's Joker and someone who would fit the costumes so I just came in and turned out to be the same sizes and they gave me the part. We filmed about a month after." Taking on the role did come with a bit of pressure, from the musician's perspective. "There were big shoes to fill taking on this role as someone with no experience but we had a good time and I hope to make my way back to the big screen soon," he said.

Birds of Prey was filmed between January and April of 2019. After director Cathy Yan's first cut/director's cut was edited and shown to Warner Bros. Pictures studio executives and producers, they had mixed reactions on it. It was then test screened to an audience sometime in summer of 2019, and although there was some positive reactions, vast majority of test screening audience hated the film, specially all the action sequences and original ending, in which it was revealed that the diamond Cassandra Cain stole contained private explicit pictures of Black Mask. Warner Bros. then demanded massive re-shoots of the film, and in August of 2019 Chad Stahelski was brought in to direct all the new action sequences, and reportedly either Yan or someone else directed all the other new scenes, which caused the budget to rise up.

Harley spends the entirety of the movie, struggling to get out of the Joker's shadow. Curiously, though, there's next to no hint of Jared Leto's Joker. All the animations show a far more traditional version of the Clown Prince of Crime, and Harley rattles off his comic book nicknames when she's trying to impress Cassandra Cain. Leto's version of the Joker wasn't exactly a hit in Suicide Squad, and there's been intense speculation he'll be recast. His deliberate absence, even carefully excised in flashbacks from Suicide Squad, seems to hint that will indeed be the case.

Including a hyena in a film that has a majority-female cast is an appropriate fit when you take into account that hyenas are matriarchal (they have a female-dominant social hierarchy). Also, Bruce, Harley's pet hyena, is seemingly killed midway through the film when villains attack Harley's apartment, but in the last scene is revealed to have survived. When they are reunited, Harley comments Bruce apparently has "nine lives, like a cat" (paraphrased). Despite looking like canids, hyenas actually are feliforms instead of caniforms, which make them (very) distant relatives of cats.
