Inspired by the comedy of Lil Rel Howery ("Uncle Drew," "Get Out," "The Carmichael Show"), REL is a multi-camera comedy starring Howery as a successful, hardworking father and husband on the West Side of Chicago, whose life is perfectly on track. That is, until he finds out his wife is having an affair with his own barber - the worst person for your wife to sleep with, because as hard as it is to find love, it's even harder to find a good barber. Now separated, and with his son and daughter having moved to Cleveland with their mother, Rel must begin the difficult task of rebuilding his life as a long-distance single dad. R.E.L. (Rarely Ever Laugh)
14 October 2018 | by franklindramaSee all my reviews

The show isn't as good as Carmichael because of the writing, casting, and cheesy concept. If the show is based on Rel losing his family to his barber, the barber should be his nemesis. You can't turn a life event into the main premise of the show and then never use it again.

The show doesn't use a laugh track; the sound editors are just bad at finding ways to blend the laughter. (I've attended a taping of "Carmichael" and they told us that we'd be used like a laugh track and have our laughs rearranged for continuity.)

Rel should've waited and developed this concept. You can't have your own show 1 year after Carmichael. You need time to pitch something worth watching. I feel like the target audience for this show is SJWs and yuppies who want to "learn more about diversity". That's not how it works.
