Sid is back just in time for the preparations for the annual amateur Christmas pantomime, which Bunty gets a star part in. Inspector Mallory and Sergeant Goodfellow realize, when the remains of murder victim Scarlett Dreyfuss are found in woods after seven years, that simpleton delivery boy Benny Clough, their sole suspect, was convicted on a confession at mother Ada's advice, couldn't have done it. However the retired police commissioner Bob Sturgess objects to them re-investigating and commandeers them for the play. So they team up with Brown and co for once, looking into people at the play, like the domineering director's mentally troubled son Douglas Bovary, who becomes victim of a stage accident, and everybody involved in the failed delivery of a medical powder envelope by illiterate Benny.
