Script/Direction Needed More Heart
9 February 2019 | by actactionSee all my reviews

The concept was solid, even flipping genders & the actors (including one Oscar nominee) were all very able to give A+ performances, so why did it fall short? The script needed an additional rewrite, to make sure to eliminate all the cheap jokes, essentially anything Tracy Morgan ad libed or that whole wedding scene. It needed to tie up loose ends, like whatever Max Greenfield's character was or what Tracy Morgan's character was really wanting for the basketball player and why they couldn't just talk about it. It needed to truly get into the head of men, something that actually kind of disappeared as a plot point about halfway through, with things she could have figured out without gnarly powers. The direction needed to pull out the character's inner-demons. Beyond what they were thinking, why did the partner who constantly doubted himself think the way he did. Why did the boss not seem to appreciate her? What was going on inside the dad's soul? I kept thinking we were missing opportunities to hear many of the thoughts that make us human and for her to use those thoughts to make her life and other's life's better. Instead, she mostly ignored the inner thoughts and it became a movie about her constantly blurting out she had powers, instead of really having fun with the situations that could be created. We needed more moments, like the two with the assistant, where we stopped on his face and held there as we could see he had been hurt or delighted by her. Most of the characters, while we heard their thoughts we focused on her reaction to it, instead of the person who was thinking the thought and figuring out why they thought that. If I were in charge, I would have reigned in Tracy Morgan's ramblings to make him funnier (he was great on 30 Rock because they edited the heck out of him)... I would have gotten to the powers sooner & more would have been situations dependent on the ability to hear the thoughts and not just situations that could happen regardless. This kind of seemed like it was a script and somebody got the idea to add the hearing thoughts gimmick in a re-write. The character of the tarot card reader was funny and interesting, but we needed a little more about her less rambling at the end. The audience I saw it with hardly laughed & seemed uncomfortable with how low-brow much of the humor was. I think the film missed the opportunity to really get into what is funny about this concept.
