In May 1940, on the outskirts of Mexico City, a detachment of Mexican Communists dressed as policemen attack the house of the former leader of the Russian revolution, Leon Trotsky. By an incredible coincidence, Trotsky and his wife survive. Having lost during the eleven years of expulsion almost all close ones and relatives, Trotsky understands: his eternal enemy, Stalin, will continue to pursue him until the end of his days. He decides to leave a political testament, for the first time to tell in full and sincerely how a man from an oppressed minority managed to become a prophet of a new world and overthrow an empire.

Konstantin Khabenskiy previously portrayed Lev Trotsky in the TV series Esenin (2005). According to Konstantin Ernst, producer of both TV series, Khabensky played "incorrectly". Khabensky himself claims that 80% of his role was cut out, and in the new television series he plays Trotsky in accordance with his first idea. See more »

Gives Hints on Internal Russian Propaganda
14 March 2019 | by johnp-36718See all my reviews

I appreciated the reviews of this movie by dorin-93538 and Evil-Herbivore and agree with most of their comments. I would like to add my speculation as to the Russian government's motivation for financing and applauding this series.

Stalin still has significant support in today's Russia. Some of it may of it may be nostalgia for the days when things were simple and stable on the surface even if daily life was impoverished and there were a lot of things that couldn't be safely talked about. There may also be conscious political support for increased authoritarianism by Putin's government.

The Trotsky series supports rehabilitation of Stalin by making him appear a competent bureaucrat and Trotsky a wild and crazy fanatic who, at the end of his life, partially repents his deeds. In the West, Stalin rather than Trotsky is usually viewed as the bad guy.
