SXSW Review: ‘Run This Town’ is a Riveting, Partly Fictional Look at Cracking the Rob Ford Scandal

A superbly entertaining new thriller from Ricky Tollman, Run This Town offers a fictionalized account of late Toronto mayor Rob Ford’s well-documented issues battling addiction and megalomania. As a disclaimer, the story was largely broken by Robyn Doolittle of the Globe and Mail. Tollman’s fictionalization of the events focuses on Bram (Ben Platt), who writes listicles for a local paper while dreaming of making his way in the world. We’re first introduced to him when he finds out that because he didn’t register, he won’t technically be able to graduate from journalism school despite completing all course requirements.

Run This Town balances a fledgling Bram’s entry into the world of journalism with a story of Ford staffers, including aide Kamal (Mena Massoud) and new addition Ashley Pollock (Nina Dobrev), who operate a spin machine that keeps embarrassing details out of the news. It can

Writer-director Ricky Tollma’s “Run This Town” — about a young Toronto journalist’s quest to break the infamous Rob Ford crack-smoking story — premiered at SXSW over the weekend, and the movie’s score plays a subtle but pivotal role in stringing viewers along for the tense ride .

The team behind the score is Ali Shaheed Muhammad, famous as the longtime DJ/co-producer for A Tribe Called Quest, and Adrian Younge, who’s produced Kendrick Lamar, Jay-z, Wu-Tang Clan and Common, among many others. The pair previously scored Netflix/Marvel’s “Luke Cage,” and released their first album together, “The Midnight Hour,” last year.

Variety caught up with the pair to talk about their work on “Run This Town,” which stretches well past any hip-hop preconceptions with a variety of sounds — sometimes all bold and organic percussion, other times quieter and French horn-inflected, often reaching back for a feel that recalls

Damian Lewis, is that you? The Billions star was spotted on the set of his new film, Run This Town, in Toronto on Monday looking a little different than usual. In the snaps, Lewis shows off the drastic transformation he went through to play Toronto's former mayor, Rob Ford. He is seen wearing heavy make-up and prosthetics as he walks down the street, quite a departure from the handsome Brit's usual appearance.   While this look is a far cry from Lewis' past roles as a soldier-turned-traitor on Homeland or as a hedge fund king on Billions, he has never been afraid to transform into a character. Ford, who was mayor of Toronto from 2010...

Cannes Film Festival 2018 Full Line-up announced

  • HeyUGuys
This morning, The line-up for one of the most prestigious films festivals in the festival calendar, Cannes, was revealed by Festival president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Fremaux.

Notable omissions from the 2000 strong submissions, is the lack of British offerings from the line-up and only a token amount of Us projects. The Cannes snobbery has gone into overdrive for 2018 with a number of shakes up, including the banning non-French theatrical releases from the main competition. This means that Netflix has refused to submit any of its films even though they were eligible to submit to the out of competition category.

The line-up includes the new films from directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Spike Lee, Wim Wenders, Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars story – which features in the out of competition category – Pawel Pawlikowski, Jafar Panahi, Lee Chang-Dong, David Robert Mitchell, Matteo Garrone and Asghar Farhadi.
