‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ Canceled After 3 Seasons on Starz

Starz has canceled the horror-comedy series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” after three seasons, the network announced on Friday.

The upcoming season 3 finale, set to air Sunday, April 29, will now serve as the series finale.

The decision comes as Starz prepares to launch two new series next month, the Mexican-American family drama “Vida” and “Sweetbitter,” an adaptation of the 2016 Stephanie Danler novel about the New York City restaurant industry.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” starred Bruce Campbell — reprising his role as Ash Williams from the “Evil Dead” film franchise — alongside Lucy Lawless, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo. “Evil Dead” filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert served as executive producers on the series alongside Campbell, Ivan Raimi and Rick Jacobson. Mark Verheiden was showrunner with producer Moira Grant.

Campbell and Raimi first teamed up for the original 1981 film “The Evil Dead.” Shot on a shoestring budget of approximately $350,000 in the woods of Tennessee, the film went on to gross over $2.4 million worldwide and achieved cult status.

The duo later reteamed for a series of sequels and a 2013 reboot before the TV series follow-up “Ash vs. Evil Dead” debuted on Starz in 2015 to critical acclaim.

Will Bates (‘The Looming Tower’ composer) on the pressure of scoring Hulu series about 9/11 attacks we ‘all lived through’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Composer Will Bates knew from the get-go that scoring “The Looming Tower” would be a daunting task. “It seemed kind of clear that of all the things that I’ve worked on, this was going to be the largest in terms of the scope of work and the level of detail that it really needed,” he reveals. Based on Lawrence Wright‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning nonfiction book, this Hulu limited series starring Jeff Daniels, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg and Bill Camp recounts the events leading up to the al-Qaeda terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Bates knew he had his work cut out for him because 9/11 is “something that, to some extent, all of us have lived through.”

See Jeff Daniels (‘The Looming Tower’) wonders, did we learn anything from 9/11, ‘or are we more divided than ever?’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

Upon reading the book, Bates was struck by “how huge this subject is.” The story takes us around the globe,

Gregg Araki’s New Starz Show is a Great Move for a Network That’s Giving Indie Creators New Life

Gregg Araki’s New Starz Show is a Great Move for a Network That’s Giving Indie Creators New Life
The loudest part of the growing drumbeat in TV is for networks to find the next “Game of Thrones,” throwing mammoth budgets at pre-existing intellectual properties. But after the high-profile swing of “American Gods” (considered a mixed success for the channel), Starz has taken a different approach to this idea. The nature of several of Starz’s upcoming shows suggest that execs are now focusing their development strategy in a much different way: auteur-driven shows centered on new ideas.

The latest move for the network is “Now Apocalypse,” a ten-episode commitment to director Gregg Araki, produced by Steven Soderbergh. Per Monday’s announcement, the new series “explores identity, sexuality and artistry, while navigating the strange and oftentimes bewildering city of Los Angeles. Between sexual and romantic dating app adventures, Ulysses grows increasingly troubled as foreboding premonitory dreams make him wonder – is some kind of dark and monstrous conspiracy going on,

Starz Files FCC Complaint Against Altice USA as Carriage Fight Heads into Week Four

Starz has asked the FCC to intervene in its carriage standoff with Altice USA, urging the commission to order the channels restored on Altice systems because the cable operator violated a rule that requires distributors give customers 30 days notice of big programming changes.

Starz has filed a petition for emergency injunctive relief with the FCC. The complaint details the back-and-forth in negotiations between Starz and Altice that began in September but didn’t heat up until late December. The 17 Starz-Encore channels went dark on Altice systems as of Jan. 1.

“To our great disappointment, and to the disappointment of Altice customers, Starz and its affiliated channels continue to remain off the air in New York,” said Chris Albrecht, president-ceo of Starz, which was acquired in 2016 by Lionsgate. “This disruption has caused high-quality programming that promotes diversity in its production, talent and content, to be taken from viewers with no notice. More than that, Altice has continued
