Legendary British comedians Morecambe and Wise desperately wanted to get Judy Garland as a guest star on one of their shows after they signed for the BBC in 1969 and started making their television shows in colour. Unfortunately Judy died before negotiations could begin. Coincidentally Bernard Delfont, played by Michael Gambon in the film, was the uncle of Michael Grade, the then agent of Morecambe and Wise. Grade was instrumental in persuading Morecambe and Wise to only sign for the BBC if they agreed to broadcast their shows in colour. The few coins she had to call America would not have allowed a lengthy call to America. The cost of a phone call to USA in 1969 would have been prohibitively expensive from a phone box, without constant, frequent additions of more coins. There is not much happy going on here. The performances are amazing. Just to displease other comments... Mickey Rooney is in the movie twice. This is just a wow that somebody so well loved could have been so emotionally tortured by herself and other. Great work on the entire movie from cast to production.
