Visions and Omens
24 August 2019 | by Prismark10See all my reviews

By the time the siege at Waco reached its deadly conclusion back in 1993, some British commentators snootily mentioned that only In America you would get whacko religious cults. That was before it dawned on people that 24 of the fatalities were British.

In this dramatisation of the events of Waco. Taylor Kitsch who never did much in the movies is more suited in the medium of television. He plays the charismatic leader of the Branch Davidians, David Koresh. He is introduced as a bit of rock n roller than a wide eyed loon interested in polygamy and underaged brides. We see Koresh talking to a potential new recruit David Thibodeau (Rory Culkin) with his interpretations of the bible.

The Branch Davidians that Koresh led were diverse in race and social class. One follower is Steve (Paul Sparks) a former theology professor. Steve is a believer but the rules are he must remain celibate but his wife Judy (Andrea Riseborough) becomes pregnant with Koresh's child. Steve contemplates leaving while Judy pleads with him that she never wanted to be here in the first place.

The first episode though does not concentrate just on Koresh. It partially based on the memoirs of FBI negotiator Gary Noesner (Michael Shannon.) Wonderful as Shannon is, the first episode makes Noesner out to be rather saintly which is unfortunate as the FBI did not come out of the siege smelling of roses.

There is a a lot of setting up here and you can sense this is eventually going to be a Koresh versus Noesner showdown. Fortunately for Waco both the actors put on good performances.
