A greek tragedy
theatersotirishillou2 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Gavra's "Adults in the room" is a modern greek tragedy. Christos Louli's prerformance as Yanis Varoufakis in one of the best performances in the modern greek cinema. The premise and the action line of the movie, remind us classic ancient greek tragedies. This is a masterpiece.

Somewhat overdramatized around Varoufakis as a person but still the complete scoop
konpanag17 February 2020
It isn't one of the best of Gavras but still most reviews are from the individuals that disaprove of anyone trying to go against the european ang greek establisment and thus have a deep distaste for Varoufakis. Don't mind them and their low ratings. The garbage truck of history and the social unrest caused by their conservative fears that let the establisment continue their destructive "solution" in Greece and elsewere wil take care of them. See this movie with a grain of salt allways and make up your own minds.

A modern political film from an expert director with a cast of mostly new actors. A must watch in your new films list.

What we need to know as Europeans
oyksas3 October 2019
I saw this movie at its premiere in Greece. I didn't realize how time went by, since the story and the directing were so fascinating that kept me at the edge of my seat. Of course I was so interested in the plot, since whatever is described in this movie has plenty to do with me as a Greek and as a European. But this is not a movie you can simply ignore, no matter one's political beliefs.

The acting of some of the actors was excellent, while others seemed to struggle. The soundtrack was superb and the plot unfolded in a natural way.

This movie does not have a happy ending, nor should it have. It is the most essential type of art. The type that gives you a glimpse behind the curtains of this world.

Really great movie! It is very interesting to see the hypocrisy of EU and how naive Tsipras was.

Warning: Spoilers
A movie based on facts, things that have happened. It brings to Europeans memories on how Europe got enslaved by demolishing democracy in Greece. The movie is a future lesson on how to (not) negotiate. Loulis is imitating Varoufakis very well, another proof that he is a great, professional actor.

Reliving events
christianakara16 October 2019
When people ask me how I found this movie it is difficult to reply since for me it wasn't like watching a movie rather than reliving 2015. To be more precise it is the first and probably the only time in my life I actually get how other people that were impacted from true incidents such as 9/11 or chernobyl etc. might feel when they watch a movie that depicts them. It is a very unique feeling that makes me want even more to recommend this movie to Greek viewers. From a political perspective, regarding the accuracy of this depiction, I leave it to every individual to decide for himself, since noone was behind these closed doors to be sure of what actually happened. But as a simple citizen that lived economical crisis and simultaneously paid very close attention to the series of political events that took place between the election of the greek government and the referendum, through TV, social media, newspaper etc. I can certainly say that the portrayal of the events and the people involved is exactly as I remember it. The tension. the excitement, the anxiety, the disappointment not necessarily in this order, came back all together as I was watching the movie. So yes, for me this movie is a 10 for all the above reasons.

History Written by the "Defeated"
kaljic13 October 2019
Based on a first-run theater viewing in Athens, Greece.

This movie by famed director Costa-Gavras succeeds very well as a political thriller. While there are notable exceptions, most political thrillers based on real events are so intent on being true to historical accuracy that the dramatic tension is flies out the window and it begins to resemble a tepid, diluted documentary instead. This is definitely not the case with Adults in the Room.

Adults in the Room does not sacrifice dramatic tension for historical accuracy. The tension is real. Costas-Gavras has taken a drawn-out political drama and reduced it to its essential dramatic elements. He has taken a complicated, sophisticated, financial dispute between many nations and presented it in an understandable context. The clash of personalities and egos on the screen which existed between Greece, Germany, France, and the various European financial and political institutions, is palpable.

This is Gonzo journalism. Adults in the Room is based on the best-seller by Yanis Varoufakis, who was not only the Greek Finance Minister during the times portrayed in this movie but also the main character in the book and in the movie. This is one of those rare instances where history is told by the defeated, not the victor. The story is told from Varoufakis' point of view, to be sure. Varoufakis the person is a brutally, somewhat confrontational, and honest negotiator. This, I'm sure, did nothing to ingratiate himself to the delicate sensibilities in Brussels, Berlin and Paris. That personality is brilliantly portrayed by Christos Loulis. That being said, if you had followed the events and issues of this dispute, his version of events is essentially accurate. The Germans, for example, are not viewed in a positive light, seeking bleed Greece dry to pay for their debt. For example, as part of the repayment of the debt the Germans proposed to purchase all Greek airports from a loan taken from the Greek National Bank! (The same thing happened during WWII, when Nazi Germany forced the Greek nation to pay for their costs of occupation!) Alexis Tsipras, the Greek Prime Minister elected to erased Greece's foreign debt, is seen as indecisive, weak, and ultimately, capitulating.

I would caution against viewing this movie based on derogatory political prejudices. Those who believe Greeks are shiftless, duplicitous gifters who are trying to welch from a debt legitimately due will doubtless be more inclined to look at this film in a negative light. The film should be watched based on the merits alone and for what it is - a political thriller which will keep your attention glued on the machinations found in international politics.

Focus on the truth
fuji_09125 January 2020
Gavras is one of the most charismatic directors in Greece .By Respecting the Events That Are True, Far From Political Purposes, he creates a strong film that no one else dared to do .A movie about the moment when Greece entered the revolutionary economy and they fought her, like no other .A must see !!!

a Greek tragedy by a great Director
michm-510319 October 2019
A well-presented film with excellent actors and great Direction. Story: Political events that took place in a critical period for Greece by the point of view of Yanis Varoufakis (Author) of the Book "Adults in the Room: My Battle with the European and American Deep Establishment Paperback - May 8, 2018". It is a film , not an historic academic paper.

Amazing-Truthful
jvasiliadis22 November 2019
Just amazing .A must watch film that presents the "ugly truth" regarding how EU and Euro working Group works. Yiamnis Varoufakis was probably the last hope of Greeks and Europeans to get out the financial depth they were but ,as this political thriller shows, EU leaders didn't really want anything like this.

MUST BE SEEN !!!!!
abisio1 July 2020
Forget your political inclinations and all you had heard about Greece tragedy; the movie is basically the discussion of a recently elected left government to survive the pressure of the EU on agreements signed by its right predecessors. We know history and how ruined Greece is; perhaps not everything is true but the film is so intense that will keep you hooked for its two hours. Does not matter you do not know most of the characters. There are very few important because the rest are just puppets. There are many wrong things in Greece; but the insensibility of the great economic powers and bankers, the pressure of the money controllers to destabilize a government and force into dirty business to destroy even more the country is truly infuriating and sadly true.

How it ends; well read the news papers and it was not good for Greece

In brief, just clean your mind of politics and see this to understand how bad our world is.
