Storyline

In 1992, teenager Sandi Tan and her friends Sophie and Jasmine shot Singapore's first indie-a road movie called "Shirkers"-with their enigmatic American mentor, Georges Cardona. Sandi wrote the script and played the lead, a killer named S. After shooting wrapped, Georges vanished with all the footage! 20 years later, the 16mm cans are recovered in New Orleans, sending Sandi-now a novelist in Los Angeles-on a new personal odyssey across two continents and many media: 16mm, digital, Hi8, Super8, slides, animation and handwritten letters. A kaleidoscopic punk rock ghost story!

I want my 1hr and 37m back!

I watched this documentary late last night after hearing a radio interview with Sandi Tan. I thought the premise of making a movie, then losing it for twenty years before you even got a chance to see it was compelling. Turns out the only thing compelling about this documentary is the premise. Let me start off by saying Ms. Tan was the wrong choice to narrate the documentary. Even though it is mostly about her, she does not come across as genuine. Additionally, the narrative itself is simplistic and her inflections poor. I understand she is trying to portray hurt, anger and loss of identity for the theft of her goofy little movie but realistically that is all it looks to be: a goofy little movie she and her friends were lucky enough to have had the resources to make. Although the documentary does not show a huge amount of actual footage, we get the idea. It would be a different story if after so many years, the footage was discovered and it turned out to be a pretty good film but it is nothing more than any other group of teenagers getting together, writing a script and play acting it. Which is fine but what is the point of a boring documentary except as another reviewer pointed out, self indulgence? Which comes across really well in the documentary actually. As a teen, I was in a rock band that played a few shows locally. We were a group of teens who played instruments, wrote songs and performed them for audiences made up mostly of friends and family. Looking back i realized we had a great time, it was a great experience but we basically sucked. My point is that it would not be necessary to document on film that time in my life and the same goes for Shirkers.
